You’ve watched the episode! You’ve (hopefully) talked about it! Now let’s hear what Robert has to say!

TheWalkingDead.com: Bob Stookey is one of the center points of this episode. This is a character who’s greatly expanded from the comic. Was there a reason that that character in particular was one that you chose to have a larger role in the show?

Robert Kirkman: Once we got Lawrence Gilliard Jr. for the role—That’s one of the best things about television versus a comic is that once you see what an actor can do they, just their presence, almost demands more, and watching the character of Bob evolve over the course of the season is a pretty fun aspect of this process.

Scott and I and everybody in the writers’ room have always had big plans for Bob. We definitely wanted to change his character up a little bit. I think a lot of that is due to lines and knowing what [Gilliard Jr.] can handle and really just trying to do something new that hasn’t been done before with a character; showing somebody that can be as weirdly optimistic as Bob is at times—for those strange reasons that he is—adds something new to the mix.

TWD: Speaking about optimism, we have another situation where an optimist is paired with a pessimist in Bob and Sasha. And in the last episode you played Daryl’s pessimism off of Beth’s optimism. I feel like these two dynamics are played off each other a lot on the show. Where do you fall on that spectrum? If you were in the Zombie Apocalypse, would you be the pessimist or the optimist?

RK: I’ve talked about this before in interviews, and I think that I’m definitely a pessimist but Scott Gimple ends up being the optimist in a lot of cases. I think that dynamic that we have in the writers’ room and in our working relationship might possibly be creeping into the show a little bit which is, I guess, somewhat interesting.

I would be that person that’s like, “Yeah, we’re screwed. There’s nothing good coming from this.” Scott is always that guy that’s like, “No, no, there might be a rainbow up there. Let’s keep going.” We pull each other along in our own ways, so it’s good.

TWD: In this episode we see Maggie in a really hardcore mode, where she’s killing walkers with street signs and she’s ripping their guts out to leave messages for Glenn. Is she coming a little unhinged or is she just that motivated to find Glenn?

RK: She’s definitely coming unhinged. This is someone who has lost the guy that she loves. We want to show just how far she’s willing to go. It’s borderline psychotic to be killing walkers and writing signs in their blood for a person that you’re not exactly sure that’s alive or out there. It’s a big reach. She’s coming unhinged, and to a certain extent as we explored in the episode, she could be endangering Sasha and Bob by going on this crusade.

It speaks to the strength of the relationship between Maggie and Glenn. We really wanted to show how much these two mean to each other and how far they’re willing to go to try and find each other, and seeing how Glenn deals with it on his side, and seeing how Maggie deals with it on her side.

There’s hopefully a lot of interesting contrast in that, that we’ll be exploring as the season continues. Maybe they’ll find each other. Maybe they won’t, but hopefully that journey will be entertaining in and of itself.

TWD: Daryl mentions in this episode that it’s only the bad people who survive. We’ve also seen Rick struggle with this concept and come to grips with it. Do you think that’s true? Do you think that bad people will rise up in the apocalypse or can good ultimately prevail?

RK: I do think that there is a chance for good to survive, and I think that Rick, at his core, and Daryl, at his core, are both good people. It’s just that I do strongly feel that there are sacrifices that need to be made, and uncomfortable decisions that need to be made, and to a certain extent “bad things” that would need to be done, from time to time to survive.

No one really gets through this clean. I think that in these moments of desperation Daryl is falling into despair and looking at himself as a bad person, and believes right now that that’s the case, but I don’t think it is.

Anyone can have the determination to survive, but even in real life sometimes you have to do something terrible to survive a bad situation but it’s that will to live and that will to survive that will get you through it.

TWD: We see more of the Beth and Daryl relationship in this episode, where they’re at the grave and Beth takes his hand. What do you make of that dynamic at this point? I’m having a hard time placing it. Is that more romantic or more brotherly? What do you make of that?

RK: I definitely wouldn’t read things to be too romantic. I think that Daryl, for all his sex appeal, is incredibly introverted and I don’t think that he really looks at things in that light. They’re forming a very—I don’t know that it’s necessarily quite brotherly/sisterly—but they are forming a very strong bond that is going to be… they’re forming a very strong bond between the two of them. I don’t know how much you want to read into that, but there might be something there. You never know.

TWD: Likewise, with the Bob and Sasha dynamic. He shares a kiss, but Sasha doesn’t really go for it. Is she holding out for a real doctor?

RK: I could say there’s probably a little bit more of a romantic spark there. I think that these are two people that are probably a little bit more open to this, although I think Sasha is seemingly more focused on other things at the moment, as you would be. But yeah, I definitely see a potential for a relationship there.

There you have it! I threw a little something in for you ‘shippers out there at the end, so make of that what you will! Be sure to come back next week for more with the boss-man!

two complete episodes without rick, carl and michonne.. I liked this one, but you should include more characters in the same ep, we only have 3 chapters left.. a pity..

Seems like the next episode will be centered on Tyreese and Carol. But, I do hope they incorporate the entire group. If not, the last two episodes would pretty much have to be.

Beth and Daryl should hook up it would add some much needed romance to the series. My wife is 23 and wants to see them hook up.

rather than seeing them ‘hook up’, id rather see something sweeter. their interactions were super cute last episode. I’d rather see them as an ‘unspoken’ romance.

I like that concept. It’s sort of already there, though. I’d say that Daryl and she were feeling it without words. Daryl’s not comfortable with the emotional stuff and coming out and verbalizing it, but he’s feeling it, and he’s conveying it without saying it out loud. Beth’s picking up everything he’s putting down, and vica versa. I don’t think they’re the sort of people who are going to hop into a bed (or a coffin, as it were) at the first flutter of love. I think it’s a slow build. It has to be. Reedus himself said that he’s more interested in the nuances and the little things that bond Daryl to another person romantically, and I definitely see that possibility with Daryl and Beth. He’ll find her again.

      Glenn + Maggie: Gaggie

      Rick + Lori = Lick

      Abraham + Rosita = Abrosita

      Daryl + Beth = Deth

      Saha + Bob = Sashkabob

      Carol + Tryeese = Cryreese

Lizzie = Walker = What the hell

Seeing Beth get kidnapped was worse than if she had died! I can only hope that somehow this band of thugs that Daryl has fallen in with can help him get her back. Last episode when Beth says Daryl will miss her when she is gone was a sad foreshadowing of this. If they hook up or stay BFF is cool with me. They have a great chemistry on screen. As for Maggie, she is long overdue for the unhinged thing. Recall her behavior in comics… And after the farm burned down she got a little crazed. But I know she will find Glenn again. Let love rule!

yeah, agree…did not see the kidnapping coming…this is something out of the governor’s tactics…which makes me wonder if we missed someone from his group surviving and pulling off this kidnapping…

would be a great story line if those rednecks Daryl just met…help him rescue her…

No I wasn’t saying that I don’t think there would be a lot of hookups (there is definitely a lot in the comics). It’s just that whenever fangirls see a random boy and girl they immediately say that they should be together.

I don’t know about more romance but there needs to be a few more bright spots. The show has been increasingly depressing this season and I almost dread tuning in. It had a balance before but now we have had a whole season of gloom and despair. It is truly getting old. My husband has started going in another room watching the new shows that are appearing and has dropped this one and he has watched since jump street. I will continue to watch unless you make the character of Daryl into a cannibalistic Hunter. Why develop these characters only to destroy them? The fans will have no trust or faith in what you write from week to week.

I actually think this season has been more bright than last season. I felt like last season was pure misery throughout. I would like more, don’t get me wrong, but at least Michonne and some others are providing brightness.

you need to learn that this is the walking dead. im a happy-go-lucky teen, and i do NOT see the depression in the show. in fact, im starting to see hope. If you are depressed now, you havent even met the new villain- man, if you dont like the destrucion of characters, why, exactly, do you watch a show where people get EATEN? I seriously doubt that daryl will go sour. I mean, do you not get the CONCEPT of this show? your not supposed to have faith in the writers! they’ll bring you to tears, or make you shout with joy, but you cant risk hoping someone will live. People will die on this show. yeah, its depressing. Death IS depressing. but. like the survivors on this show, YOU NEED TO DEAL WITH IT!

This is the walking dead, where things only get worse. Everyone is going to die at some point and that’s why the show is so popular. Safe characters and happiness is an apocalypse is unrealistic.

Season 4 has been the best season so far, this is really the first time we have had the characters on the move for a prolonged period rather than in a static location (season 1 = camp / season 2 = farm / season 3 prison) I for one am enjoying the changing locations and points of view from week to week and the unpredictability that being on the road brings

I don’t get the complaints about S2. It wasn’t a long, drawn-out season for me! And being at a farm tucked away in the woods for that length of time not only served the purpose of the plot but allowed for future actions (the herd, fire, & Andrea’s separation) to have a bigger impact.

i liked the first season as well- i mean, they were out in the open, and they WERENT safe- it added a little bit of excitement to the show! dont get me wrong, i love all of the walking dead! but seasons one and four are my favorites.

Ok — so I try not to do any “shipping” esp. on this show
because it’s just not what the show is about and, let’s face it, romance does
not necessarily “bloom” in post-apocalyptic zombieworld. But I gotta’ say “Hot
Damn” Beth and Daryl have chemistry! I guess I’ll be okay with any kind of
relationship that develops (if one of them doesn’t die…which would be a
bad idea, because there is so much
storyline potential here) but the idea of unrequited love kind of breaks my
heart. That is the worst kind and probably the most torturous for viewers. But
Bob and Sasha look like they’ll be a more straight-forward couple.

Maggie also witnessed her father being killed and was completely helpless…so I’m sure it’s pretty easy to become “unhinged”with those images in your mind.
