Here we are, the end of season 3. Will we learn Andrea’s fate? Will the Governor finally get his? Who will live and who will die? Let’s watch together and find out!

The plan is to update this post every commercial break with the recap, which I’m finishing up right now. Hopefully I don’t hit any snags posting. I’ll be in the comments section all episode as well. I think this is better than live tweeting because that really sucks for our followers that can’t watch the AMC East Coast airing. So stay tuned to this post!

Reminder: If you haven’t entered our “Favorite Character” Finale Contest yet, get on it! Try and get your entry in tonight.

HERE WE GO:

The episode starts with a really cool zoom out from the Governor’s eye. He is beating the stuffing out of Milton for betraying him by burning his biters. “What would your daughter think about what you are?” “She’d be afraid of me. If I’d been like this from the start she’d be alive today.”

Milton asks if Andrea’s alive which earns him a trip to her torture chamber. The Governor has Milton pack up his tools. He uses the opportunity to drop a pair of pliers behind Andrea’s chair where Andrea can reach them. The Governor offers Milton a chance to get back in his good graces, if he’ll just kill Andrea. When Milton instead tries to kill the Governor, the Governor stabs Milton and leaves him bleeding to death locked in with Andrea, where zombie Milton will then eat Andrea alive. “In this life now, you kill or you die. Or you die and you kill.” Awesome. Credits.

At the prison, Carl is packing up (PACKING UP?! They’re leaving?!). He contemplates the picture of his parents, and Rick’s badge. He puts on Rick’s hat and heads out. Everyone is packing up. Carl is pissed. He shrugs off Rick when he tries to talk to him. Glenn even mentions to Rick how mad Carl is. “He’s still just a kid. It’s easy to forget.” Rick walks to the car and sees Lori again, just real quick.

Daryl is packing his bike. He says “Merle never did nothing like that his whole life.” Carol says “He gave us a chance.” So that question’s answered: yes the group knows about Merle’s sacrifice. Carol takes Daryl’s hand and helps him up.
1-handhold

Michonne talks to Rick. He apologizes for considering the Governor’s offer. Michonne thanks Rick for taking her in. And then he says that it was Carl that made the call, saying she was one of them. Nice Rick/Michonne moment.

Over in Woodbury, the Governor is getting everyone pumped up to roll on the prison. Tyreese and Sasha say that they won’t go. They won’t kill other people. They’ll stay and protect the children and then leave when the Governor comes back if he wants. The Governor turns and grabs a gun and… gives it to Tyreese. Whew. The Governor says “thank you” and they roll out.
2-tyreese

They hit the prison hard. 50 cal mounted machine gun. Grenade launchers. They take out the guard towers and start mowing down the walkers that surround the prison.
3-openfire

Then they move inside. They find no one. They continue deeper into the prison and it’s deserted.

As they move into lower levels after hearing noises we cut back to Andrea and Milton. Milton tells Andrea that he dropped the pliers behind her. She struggles with them as Milton gets closer to dying.

Back to the prison, the Governor’s men have split up. They’re down in the tombs. Following some noise they approach a large closed door and…

Back to Tyreese and Sasha in Woodbury. They’re discussing what will happen to them when the Governor gets back. Tyreese says they can slip out like Andrea did.

Meanwhile Andrea is finally able to reach the pliers with her feet. She looks over to Milton, who is looking about 99% dead. He asks Andrea why she stayed even after she knew her friends were out there. She says she wanted to save everyone. She quits trying to reach the pliers while she’s talking. Probably not the best move. With his last breaths, Milton tells Andrea she needs to hurry. She kicks off her boots and gets to work picking up the pliers with her toes.

Back the prison, the Governor’s men are hit with a flash bang and then swarmed by walkers. As they run out of the prison our group opens fire on them from the walls. The Governor’s men try to open fire with the 50 cal but it’s been jammed while they were inside. With no way to fight back they get in their trucks and run.

One of the Governor’s men, a young man, is running through the forest. He chances on Hershel and Carl (who was not at all pleased at not being included in the assault team). Hershel tells him to drop his weapon. He says “sure, here, take it” but doesn’t set it down. After waiting a few seconds Carl drops him.
4-carl-gun

In the prison yard, the entire group is saying they need to go after the Governor’s men and finish it. First, they go inside to check on Hershel, Carl, Beth, and Lil’ Ass Kicker. Carl tells his dad he deserves to go to Woodbury because he did his job in the woods, and killed a guy. After he walks off, Hershel tells Rick that Carl gunned the kid down in cold blood.

The Governor is on the road. He forces his other trucks to pull over and yells at them that they need to stay on the attack. As they argue about it the Governor opens fire on the ones that want to go back to Woodbury. When he’s done, Allen holds his gun on the Governor. The Governor kills him. Then he walks into the field and finishes off everyone with shots to the head. The Governor misses one of his victims (Karen), who plays dead in the field. The Governor, Martinez, and Shupert get into the truck and drive off.
5-survivor

Andrea is still trying to get the pliers into her hands. Just as she succeeds and starts working on her restraints, we see Milton’s hand start to move.

The group at the prison is packing up and getting ready to hit Woodbury. Rick sees Carl sitting by himself and goes to talk to him about the kid he killed in he woods. Rick asks Carl is the kid was handing it over. Carl says it doesn’t matter and tells him how the people they haven’t killed (Randall, the Governor) have gone on to kill people they care about. He walks off and drops Rick’s sheriff’s star at Rick’s feet. Glenn and Maggie say they’ll stay and guard the prison in case the Governor comes back. Daryl, Rick, and Michonne drive off.

On the road they run into the Governor’s trucks and a bunch of walkers from the Governor’s slaughterfest. They also find the girl that the Governor didn’t finish off.

Back in Woodbury Milton is reanimating, and Andrea is not yet clear of her bonds. She starts yelling as Milton closes in. As he lunges at her we get a shot of the door to the room and just hear the sounds of a struggle, which ends with a thump and then quiet.

Outside, Rick and his group run into Tyreese. They fire on each other until Karen, the girl that survived the Governor’s rampage, explains what happened. They enter Woodbury. They tell Tyreese why they were coming and then say that now they’re looking for Andrea. They go to the torture room (apparently Glenn and Maggie told them where it was), and find a dead Milton and a living Andrea huddled agains the wall. Andrea has a sizable walker bite on her throat. Andrea asks if everyone is ok.
6-andrea-bitten

Andrea is glad that Michonne found Rick and his group. She says no one can make it alone now. Daryl agrees, and says he couldn’t. Andrea insists on finishing herself. Rick gives her his gun and a tearful Michonne stays with her as the others wait outside.

We see Rick, Tyreese, and Daryl in the hallway outside and hear a gunshot.

It’s the next morning, the group heads back to the prison, with a school bus in tow. They’ve brought back everyone from Woodbury, which at this point is the elderly and very young. Carl asks “Who’s this?” and Rick says “They’re going to join us.” Carl stomps inside. Rick looks at the catwalk where he usually sees Lori but she isn’t there. The episode ends with a fade to black from a shot of Lori’s grave.
7-grave

Somber ending but hopeful (maybe?). But the Governor is still out there. The group is still in the prison. Andrea, Milton, Allen, and almost all of the Governor’s men are dead. What comes next for our group? What will the Governor do now?

What did you think of the finale? Sound off below, where, if everything went according to plan, we’ve been talking about it for the last hour.

I sure wish Amazon would get episodes faster. I’ll have to wait until tomorrow, since I don’t have cable. I really wish AMC had some way to let us folks without cable channels watch it on Sunday night with the rest of world.

Some people on Twitter are asking where you get highlighters in the apocalypse. Really? Like, any office or drug store or any store at all pretty much. It will take YEARS for all the highlighters to dry up. Don’t question the grenade launcher, question the highlighters.

I haven’t been able to stand that Carl since Dale died b/c of him. He is an obnoxious kid. Losing Andrea (my 2nd favorite character after Rick) has made me rethink if I want to keep watching. I’m afraid they will kill of Rick and I don’t want to see that. Ending the season this way is disgusting. I would have liked the group to have felt triumphant by finally killing that Governor guy.

Kill side characters that are dead already, why kill a main character, her and Michonne are they only one’s I was really attached to! I swear if they decide to kill Michonne i will just stop watching the f*cking show!!!

There’s no way the show can keep up with the grittiness of the comics. That said, I hear ya on Andrea. She’s a key character in the comic, but I’m sure they will find someone to fill her role going forward. Carol? Beth (I mean, she DID finally get her first walker kill this week)? And I wouldn’t worry about Michonne. She’s too much of a BAMF.

I think his whereabouts will serve as enough of a cliffhanger for people to tune in for season 4. Fun to see the slightly different direction the show is taking from the comic. The prison attacks definitely went down a little differently, but who’s to say the Governor didn’t just retreat to go get his tank haha (hmmm…)

A lot of mixed feelings after watching… Definitely didn’t feel like a season finale. Andrea’s death, while surprising, made sense. It illustrated the fact that you can’t deal with issues the same way as you did before the apocalypse. To me, it mirrors Carl’s new viewpoint on the world. Surprised that the show is going to drag out the Governor’s character to next season. Much of the season was spent building up a final battle between the two communities and what the viewers were given was the complete opposite. I enjoy the show but the comics are so much better.

You can’t tell me you could have done without the ‘Clear’ episode. I admit the end of the episode was oddly optimistic(?) but season 2 ended with the sight of the prison which was a bit optimistic, too, I guess so it’s not completely out of left field. It’s just that this time there are so many questions.

Well, I think you’re not going to hire an actor such as David Morrissey to just kill him off after 1 season. Who knows if he’ll appear in season 4 at all? Merle didn’t show up in season 2. I think they’re gonna save him for a later season 4 dramatic ending sort of like Michonne. I liked the ending a lot. It might not have been a BAM explosive ending, but it gave you many things to keep you thinking ’till october. Now on Andrea’s death, I didn’t expect that at all! I was hoping for a (SPOILER ALERT!!!) Rick-Andrea romance like in the comics. This season was marked for no being predictable and I dig that. Everyone was expecting a Rick-Governor showdown and we all got a berserker governor instead. It’s all cool in my book.

I was wondering, in the first season it opens with Rick shooting a little girl zombie, then the next season ends with him shooting another little girl zombie and now this season ends with carl shooting a young boy (although older then himself) is this going to remain a reacurring theme? will carl open next season popping another boy maybe his own age? will the following season show little ass kicker popping up out of a play pen to snap the neck on another toddler? these are the questions, really strange ones but still questions

At one point Milton said “too late” my question is did he say that before he died or after? remember that Milton was running experiments to see if the Zombies kept any part of themselves after dieing, if the “too late” was after he died maybe it was a subtle way of saying there is something left in there …..

Didn’t Jenner in the CDC in Atlanta say, while showing the ‘first event’ on episode TS-19, “Everything that you were died.” The P.E.T scan (or whatever that was) showed only minimal functionality or the brain stem? I’d say that given what we know, it would be impossible for Milton to say anything after he had turned. Although it is an interesting question.

I liked this episode because, like so many others, it was totally unpredictable. The only thing I was pretty sure of was Milton had it coming.

Carl was justified in shooting that kid from The Governor’s group…I would’ve seen it differently if that fella would’ve just dropped the gun & threw up his hands. Still, he needed to be put in check for talking the way he did to his father! Could be just like Shane when he grows up!

I’m hurt by Andrea’s death…she was one of the “original” characters. That comment about knowing where the safety on the gun is…..(sniff).

I see the prison as being safer than Woodbury because of the fences. Woodbury needs too many people to guard the walls.

I’m not disappointed that The Governor is still alive…for the sake of adding that drama to the show (like Shane). I know he is psychotic but I was still taken aback by his gunning down of his own crew and by what he said about Penny being scared of him. I wouldn’t want the fight to end until there’s a greater contender to catch my attention.

I know a lot of people disagree with the chcices Andrea made this season and I do as well to some extent (ie I would have stabbed the bastard), but I really enjoyed her character and was shocked at what went down last night. Going to miss her but am interested to see how it affects the rest of the group. I thought last night when Rick and his group brought the Woodbury survivors to the prison that it could be their way of honoring Andrea, and the sacrifice she made trying to save everyone. Can’t wait for season 4

Love what MikeB had to say, the idea (even if improbable) that Milton spoke post turning would be a cool twist. One of the background aspects to TWD I love the most is that some individuals still haven’t given up hope of finding a solution or reason within everything. Milton was the clear manifestation of this theme (Kirkman told me explicitly for my day job: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/03/with-s3-the-walking-dead-is-a-different-show-the-most-interesting-one-yet/) but it’s popped up elsewhere before (was sad to see Noah Emmerich go so soon, RIP CDC). Sad to see him go, think he was the most interesting new character, but a satisfying season of work from Milton.

I thought season 3 was better the 2nd but I am also disappointed with finale since the final battle between Gov and Rick’s group at prison was a lot more intense and devastating in comic from what I have read. Maybe if Gov came back to Woodbury and Andrea got out of room and killed him would have redeemed Andrea not dying for nothing. I think AMC suits wanted to keep Gov alive for next season and overrode the writers and showrunner from killing off Gov. That’s probably why the Glen Mazzara the latest showrunner quit because he hated the ending also. so, Mr. Kirkman you better make up for dissapointing
season ending with a great season 4 . Maybe have governor show up with a tank?

Remember how she acted when Merle said you were left by the same people that left me. She acted like well I couldn’t care less about them. I don’t know why everyone is so upset about this episode it just showed that Ricks group out smarted the governor. Remember the governor lost his good men thanks to Merle. All the governor had was scared ordinary people, most who were kids & women. I think with an army like that what happened would be what was expected. I can’t wait for season 4 LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this show!!

The fact that The Governor is still out there has me looking forward to Season 4! What would be the big cliffhanger if he was killed off? Carl needing an attitude adjustment? Glenn & Maggie’s wedding? A stray walker or two inside the prison? It seems the show was getting deeper into the madness of The Governor…who WOULDN’T be looking forward to the next season? I think a lot of the comic book readers cheat themselves out of enjoying the show because they try to base all of the elements of the show on the comics (coming from a comic reader that has aligned reading with the show). Besides, I think it’s AWESOME that the show doesn’t completely line up with the comics & that it’s hard to predict what will happen. I have TWO awesome ways to enjoy The Walking Dead!!!

As for Andrea, she was probably the most misunderstood character on the show. But not every character should be exactly how we would want them to be. The real world is full of people that don’t make logical decisions each and every time, so why not have these characters on a show? And we don’t have to like them (I HATED Lori!!!)

That’s just my take…. I love both the show & the comic & looking forward to Season 4!!!

Weak, very weak. Sorry for bad english writing but, honestly mr. Kirkman, just like the movies people who never read a comic strip! Your true fans, like myself, are disappointed with at least the last two seasons (in Brazil the second and third season). The first season was much different from the original, but it was good. But Sophia? The Allen twins, Carol’s madness? their death is one of the most important passages of the whole saga, but are not worthy of TV … nor the characters’ fucks … And Andrea in the movie is only a shadow of the comic Andrea.

I’m sorry, I’m just being honest. Words of a disappointed fan

Everybody is complaining about their favorite characters being killed off, but remember this is the apocalypse! If this would happen in real life you would lose a lot of people you cared about while trying to survive. You would change as a person by learning from mistakes, mistakes that get people you care about killed like in Carl’s case. So, I don’t like seeing my favorite characters killed off, or seeing people turning into ruthless killers, but it is realistically how it would be.

The actress who played Andrea is probably the worst actress I’ve ever seen in a very long time. The Andrea in the comics is so cool, she was a superficial girl before the event and during the process she turns herself into an amazing women, much better than she was. In the TV show is exactly the opposite, she’s a real trash, zero charisma, had to kill her fast. It’s a shame that it was only in the very end of the season, should have killed her in the first episode. She’s one of the favorites in the comics, so the actress can’t complain about the role, she just sucks and that’s the truth. People should start casting talented people with a soul to be in the series. The cast of actors are the most important aspect, do this wrong for whatever obscure reason and the show is over. You have the writer and a guy to implement his ideas into the show working together, that’s it. focus on the casting pls. ppl who says they like Andrea in the TV show are the ppl that didn’t read the comics or are thinking with another part of their body. Seriously worse actress ever. Everyone else I like (Lori was irritating, but played the role well) and the next season promises with the writer on the helm of things, good call.

Usually I welcome the differences between the show and the comic. It makes watching the show less predictable, and let’s not discount the fact that Daryl is an AMAZING addition! However, the handling of Andrea’s character overall was disappointing :/ not just her death, but most things. I can understand altering certain characters, but Andrea is one of the main reasons that their group is not only still alive, but such a dominant force! She is a brutally accurate sniper……hoping someone steps up to fill the void. Also keeping my fingers crossed in hopes that the TV show “introduces” Abraham and Negan. lol I won’t be the jerk who spoils the comic for those who have not yet read it, so I’ll just leave it at that. Thanks again to Kirkman and the rest for delivering a great comic and television series.

I was sad over the ending. I liked Andrea’s growing bravery. Her character and Milton’s had a lot of room to grow and evolve. Leaving only the weak people behind didn’t offer much excitement for the next season.
