THE WALKING DEAD issue #158 is out, and hopefully you’ve read it, made finger puppets of the characters, re-enacted the issue for local school children, mailed us a check for rights to said performance, wondered where you’re going to get the money so the check doesn’t bounce, taken out a second mortgage on your home, wondered why on Earth you did that stupid performance anyway, realized that your finger puppets were on point tho, and are now ready to comment. That almost certainly being the case, let us know what you thought down below! We’ll be awarding our favorite comment with a signed issue of THE WALKING DEAD #158!

WINNER UPDATE:

The winner of this issue’s comment contest is JoeCool4TWD! Although the other comments were amazing and we’re glad there’s love out there for Father Gabriel we couldn’t help but give it crown this punny guy! Here’s what they said:

“Well, Father Gabriel had one misstep too many, and it broke him. He ended up hanging with the new crowd after his world was turned upsidedown, and he even spilled his guts to the leader. You could tell something was eating him, but he left the story, sadly, without getting the help he needed.”

Yes yes, indeed. Make sure to check your email (and junk email) so we can get your info to send you that signed copy!

PREVIOUSLY: War between Alexandria and the Whisperers was inevitable. So when Negan gifts Alpha’s head to Rick, there’s no turning back. Dwight leads the troops in the field while Gabriel plays lookout in a water tower. What he sees is an army of walkers advancing toward their position.

While I find the story really engaging, last week I said I was excited about the sixteen grid system, it is really jarring reading it like this. Being able to switch scenes four times in a page didn’t really flow as well to me. However, I’m sad that Gabriel went down not very majestically. Granted, someone needed to bite the bullet, and Andrea is still alive so everything is all good there! 🙂

Hahaha Gabriel’s dead, after nearly 100 issues of doing absolutely nothing he’s finally gone. I shall miss Kirkman saying occasionally how he has ‘Big plans’ for Gabriel that lead to nothing. But man that’s a character that long out stayed his welcome. By buddy!

What a stupid way to kill off Gabriel, Kirkman. You gave him a lot of development recently and then made him die by being tremulous while climbing down a ladder and falling off that, seriously? he didn’t even have a chance to signal the army before his death, what a useless death -_-

    • Hogg Head says:

That sometimes happens. Sure, it would be nice if he got surrounded and dragged himself and a few Whisperers to hell with a grenade. But he was never soldier and panicked. Most probably he would die anyway. What a sad death, tho. He didn’t even warn them.
When Beta lunged at Dwight, I thought it was over, but Negan saved the day again! Go Negan, add Beta’s head into your collection!

Knowing the way the TWD likes to tease and misdirect with its endings, I think there’s a 100% chance Negan was talking to Beta with the intention of making you think he means Dwight at the end.
Really brutal death for Father Gabriel. Got to see his feasted remains and all.
Man, a lot of these people are fucking idiots, though. “Oh, if the Whisperers finish with Rick’s crew they come here next!” MAYBE THAT’S WHY YOU HELP RICK INSTEAD OF BEING CONCERNED WITH YOUR OWN PETTY SHIT. YOU FUCKING SAVIOR DUMBASSES JUST ADMITTED THE FUCKING PROBLEM AND ARE STILL SO INEPT YOU CAN’T SEE THE LARGER PICTURE. Same with that dude in the Kingdom, too. Get Michonne in control now. Or at least have protecting the guy over there making decisions.

I’m willing to say this given the pacing of this war. I do not see Beta lasting longer than the next issue of it. He’s pretty much fucked in the october issue. He might take down a good chunk of people along the way but this does not mean that the war is over. Not by a long shot I’m expecting the following twists to happen.
A.) We’re gonna have a surprise betrayal either in the form of.
    Negan.
Who sees his chance with Beta out of the picture to take the reigns of the situation and make the most of the situation with either direction he can turn to. Either Saviors or Whisperers who would still recognize him as the top dog since he killed their previous top dog TWICE
Leaving them with no choice but to bow down to the new Alpha.
    Lydia
Who would find out that Alpha her mother got killed by Negan and who in turn would be pissed off at Rick who had nothing to do with it. And will eventually as result get Rick killed as a consequence of Negan’s actions. This infuriates Carl and Carl eventually kills Negan in return.
or Rick just simply goes back on his word like the prick that he is and kills Negan once the War is over. I can see him doing that too. Sadly which I dont want him to do.
Please dont kill Negan at least until Here’s Negan is over Kirkman 😀

A great death for Gabriel but he felt kind of wasted as a character. It feels like this twist about his soldier background was only introduced to give the war a major send-off early on.
I also loved seeing Tara, John and the Kingdom but I wish we’d seen more in the aftermath of the last war. This is the downside of the time jump as I think this stuff would have more weight if we’d seen how Michonne fitted into this Kingdom dynamic before Ezekiel died and if we saw how Dwight managed this clearly divided community.
The 16 panel grid is still wonderful. And Negan is, as ever, The Boy. Lots of good war stuff but I thought Eugene might have rigged them up some explosives or something. Love Magna to the rescue.
Good instalment. And I have zero clue where this is going next which is unusual and brilliant.

I wanna start by saying THANK YOU for having Negan kill Alpha! I did not wanna see those two together.. Loving this storyline so far! I enjoy how creepy & stealthy the Whisperers are & seeing their absurd “culture” has been a treat. I had been wondering about how the Saviors have been running things. It seems like they might still be holding on to Negan’s ways somewhat.. Looks like Eugene is becoming sort of the cool guy on campus lately? So I’m hoping I’ll see more of him doing this in the show & that he survives awhile longer. I absolutely eat up everything Negan-related, he has become my favorite character in anything ever & you guys are really making me hope that he has been rehabbed & will end up being someone worth some respect (I think he is already, but one could argue that)
Another character that I’ve been really into lately is Magna! I’m rooting for her to become a more popular character & iconic leader.
(Also for what it’s worth, I predict Rick losing a hand with his own hatchet at the hands of Negan in the S7 premiere) Thanks for taking the time to read my comment! =^ . ^=

Issue started out with an unexpectedly quick death for Gabriel but the, “You should have whispered..” line helped bring that together with the time lapse ending with his devoured corpse. However this last moment with Negan is the greatest thing I’ve seen out of this comic in a while, I was overwhelmed with joy when I got to this panel! Excited and worried about the next issue, I actually want Negan to live now… Which would make his death in this arc all the better… Fuck!

Thanks for posting the panel of Negan’s most recently colorful language. I read that the first time, laughed, reread it, memorized it and am now using it when I can. Granted, that is not very often, sadly.
Great issue! Glad that Father Gabe got it. What a freaken klutz!! Seriously why was he even trying to leave the top of the tower?? Surely he didn’t think the entire group was going to climb the ladder to get him. Even if a few of the Whisperers did, he could easily pick them off, and the whisperers would realize that and move on. But we all know Father G was no brain trust.
Maybe Negan will capture Beta, and have him locked up. Now that would ingratiate him to most of Alexandria and the Kingdom.
Yeah, the Saviors are pretty much the red headed stepchildren of the zombie apocalypse. I am sure there are some fine people there but they are probably on anti depressants at this point and hiding under porches for fear that the bad attitude and gloom will claim them too.

this looks like its bound to go from bad to much worse. a large scale battle has broken out, and the bloodshed has yet to reach the communities, which have lookouts posted, all commenting on matters looking fine. and i have a hard time believing the group with beta are the only whisperers/corpses that have been deployed. rip padre gabriel.

First of all, Gabriel is an idiot. Good riddance.
Second, Negan must really miss Lucille. He hit the head leader of the Whisperers but did not shoot him. He needs his bat and bar wired wife substitute back.
Third, Dwight will give it back, and it will be the biggest mistake he has ever made.
Fourth, the Whisperers probably move in waves. It may be easier to take them out if the Hilltop and other communities resort to the horns to move the real undead and pick out the ones who are just wearing the skins.
Fifth, the communities that are not helping out will pay…and perhaps Negan will be involved?
Finally, Eugene’s CB buddy is in Ohio? There may be a way to get them involved in helping out, if he can convince them that it is in their best interests to work together.
I like this war. I can see patterns in it that intrigue me…

Feels very much like you people are planning a revolution to me, Negan is being Mr. Funny Ass Nice Trustworthy Savior guy. While Rick sat on, Negan went out and cut the head off the snake and now has further demonstrated his worth. Me might be thinking you are planning some snap elections once this current war is done with and I think if Negan comes out the hero there may well be support for him to replace Rick at the helm.
Are you all as sneaky as him? Or is he really the nice guy? I think not……

Beta needs to die now!! Of course a few more issues in the Whisperer War Arc…so maybe not…but seriously…what the hell is up with some groups not supporting the man that saved their asses…MORE THAN ONCE by the way and put the community on the path to the word COMMUNITY?? Maybe Beta dies by Negan’s hand and the rest of the War Arc is these turncoats getting their due via Grimes Justice!

Its the Kirkman/Negan style for Negans threat at the end of this issue to be to Dwight for laying on top of Lucille. Dwight is flat on his back in the last panel assuming Lucille is in the back pack it is quite like Negan to say get up of the ground, call him an arsehole and threaten him with a coffin for treating his girl shabbily.

Gabriel is not the brightest though, some Whisperers could try to climb up the ladder but he could just shoot them down so easily, and if he needed to signal the rest and he forgot to bring something to signal them like a mirror or something he could have just shot his gun. Maybe Alexandria and the Hiltop will fall and it is up to either the Sanctuary or the Kingdom to save them so like the Kingdom saves the Alexandria and the Sanctuary saves the Hiltop or the Hiltop, Alexandria and the Kingdom will fall but the Sanctuary has to save them? I think eventually the Sanctuary will come to their senses and help the other communities. I really hope that Zachary dies, I think Robert Kirkmen wrote his character just so people hate him and maybe some other things but he for sure knew that people would hate him, William is smart though, I don’t know who I want the leader for The Kingdom either William or Michonne. I wish William was introduced earlier in the series though. I am starting to love Magna now hopefully she will have a relationship with Dwight if none of them die. I really want more of Heath in the series!

Rick might die in this war because think of it! Robert Kirkmen already said that Rick will eventually die and this is a big war bigger then “All Out War” and there already has been three main “Bad Guy’s” so yeah he might probably not though!
