Here it is: Issue #146 discussion! How will the citizens of Alexandria (and beyond) react to what’s happened? Find out when you pick it up and then come discuss it RIGHT HERE! Best comment below (Johnny will pick his top 3 and I’ll pick a winner from that, so feel free to butter him up) will PROBABLY win a Robert Kirkman-signed 146. I don’t actually have them in hand but we should be able to get one or two signed this week… And if not, hey, you’ll get something else from the archives!

Previously:
Rick and his group bury what remains of their friends, lashing out at each other and struggling to find the proper response. Ricks knows that this could ruin everything. They return to Alexandria to break the terrible news…

COMMENT WINNER

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR COMMENT WINNER, UNDERSOLO! Here’s their interpretation of 146:

“The last time Maggie knocked Rick out was when Negan killed Glenn. It seemed inevitable that those two would be in conflict, especially with their different methods of dealing with a threat. Maggie’s way may make sense on the surface, but I can understand why Rick is the real leader. Using violence to solve things can only work to a certain point…
And will someone note that Rick hit Maggie by accident, please? He did not mean to hurt her. And I think that he let her pummel him to show just how wrong it is lead with your emotions in a crisis. Whether or not she will learn her lesson from this, I cannot say… But I am sure now that as we head toward #150, there will be some very weird and frightening moments for all concerned. And I am also sure that someone will be dumb enough to let Negan loose…again…Just my thoughts.”

So many amazing comments this time around! We liked this comment ESPECIALLY for the callback to the Negan/Glenn moment (RIP) AND how UnderSolo pointed out the leadership tension in Alexandria. Congrats for winning! Remember to keep commenting on these comic discussion posts and YOU could win a Robert Kirkman-signed copy!!

This is just gut-wrenching, it feels like more than just a story arc.
At one point I thought we were going to get all the way through without any dialogue. I don’t have a clue how Kirkman is going to *stop* it all falling apart now.
(No way is TV Glenn going to make it through Negan appearing if Kirkman’s ok with killing pregnant women…)

I’m starting to think that Maggie should start running everything. Rick is too exhausted mentally. I don’t know exactly what is going to happen, but Negan is going to play a big role in this. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is it for Rick. I’m really hoping that Rick makes it through this new war.

I’m starting to think that there is a possibility of leading to something else crazy. This issue I think is giving us a false herring with Alpha. What if this is actually building to a civil war between Maggie and Rick? I know it would take a lot to build to it, but that would be crazy. Its not a plot point we have seen a lot of in the comics, and it would be pretty cool to see. Far-fetched, I know, but I can at least see a little bit of groundwork laid. I just foresee Maggie and Rick growing further apart in philosophies since they are too stuck in their own ways.

    • jaek_harper says:

Now THAT is something I would like to see. Not only are Rick and Maggie’s philosophies starting to really seem like they’re differing, but it seems like the same thing is happening with Rick and the people of the communities. God, that is genius. they could incorporate The Saviors, refer to past events, I would love to see how Jesus works out with that, could you imagine how it would affect Carl? The possibilities are endless.

Such a frustrating choice… should I keep playing “The Walking Dead: Road to Survival” to take down those stupid fuckers who keeps raiding me, or should I just take a break from it and read the latest issue? Seriously, YOU guys should totally try out the game, it’s such a goddamn addicting game.
ALSO, I WANT THE BIG SWINGING DICK ADDED IN THE GAME.
It’s pretty surprising why Benjamin (from Issue 129) is added in the game but not Negan!? I think Kirkman or game creators needs to jog their memories.
Now, about this issue… it was absolutely fucking fantastic, but I don’t know what to say about Kirkman’s fetish – Killing pregnant women must be far better than smashing Asians’ brain in.
Now I finally get it… Kirkman’s more of a equality guy, not fucking racist.
Good luck with fan letters from feminists, Robbie.
My jaw dropped to the floor when Rick mentioned Hershel and his barn to Maggie… that was the best scene I’ve ever read in TWD history! Rick may look the “craziest” there, but fucking hell guys… DIDN’T YOU SEE THE GIANTASS HORDE OUT THERE? It’s far bigger than Negan’s! I’m actually curious to see if Maggie can make a better leadership than Rick, but I’m always on his side if shit goes down.
What? You think Maggie would make a great leader… yeah.. I… well… I’ll be in a bomb shelter if you need me.
It’s obvious that Rick Grimes will become Captain America with a brand-new walking cane made of vibranium and adamantium. Sure, Maggie on the other side is Iron-Woman. We ain’t that stupid, Kirkman… go write a better story without plagiarizing. Yes, it’s a joke… chill.
I have a perfect prediction for the future issues…
Rick, Carl, Andrea, Michonne, etc. decided to leave Alexandria-Safe Zone since they don’t agree with the community’s new law. Maggie respects their decision and lets them leave with a few horses and a wagon (awe, best leader ever). Once they left, Maggie and Jesus plans to head over to jailhouse to take out the prisoner who brutally murdered Glenn. But when they’re downstairs, they find an empty cell with a door left open, leaving Maggie shocked. In the last panel, you can find Negan sitting inside the covered wagon along with Rick and others. But think about it… the ending could lead to separate ways… maybe they helped Negan escape and hid him in a wagon… or maybe they didn’t know that Negan was in a wagon!?
I know it’s a crazy or bit silly prediction, but it’s something I would like to see…
Rick freeing Negan would be very interesting… to prove a point that he does not kill and cannot let Maggie take him out. It’s unknown if they’re going to live in another community or hide in a forest… and it would be awesome to learn about Negan’s strained relationships with Rick and others.

Well after reading this issue I think I need to change my WWCD ( what would Carol do) to WWMD. She is spot on. The people need a stronger leader and I would be doing cartwheels if it was Maggie. However, Rick seems to rise to any occasion, and has been known to pull a trick or two…
Eugene’s invention.,. hmmm could it be a detonator? That would enable the good guys to wipe out the heard. That would also explain the crying whisperer looking person on the cover of 148, that person could be in cahoots with Eugene to plant the explosives. I think I would AGAIN do cartwheels if Eugene was the real hero here.
So whats up with Michonne? Packing? Going where?
And where does Magna fit into this? Is she good or is she a bad girl. HMMMM

Rick is done. (I hope he doesn’t become like this on the show) and that one dude (i forgot what his name is), but he said it right “I cant believe id see the day Rick Grimes became a fucking pussy!” He’s not what he use to be prior to Alexandria. Alexandria I think has made him weak post All Out War. He’s becoming a Martyr. (Didn’t he (Rick) say he didn’t want to become a Martyr or was he talking about Negan?) Anyway, I don’t know what the hell Eugene is thinking when he’s thinking about using Lydia as a Hostage because Alpha could care less if her daughter is dead anyway. Didn’t she (Alpha) just say she’s (Lydia) shunned from the Whisperers (pretty much).??? Other than that, MAGGIE GREENE FOR PRESIDENT!

OKAY THEORY TIME!!! I loved this issue, but one thing struck me as particularly odd. At the end, when Eugene is talking to Rick and Andrea, he tells them that her baby wasn’t his. What I thought was interesting was that Rosita, who confided a lot in Andrea, did not mention that the child was not Eugine’s. WHAT IF the child that Rosita was carrying was…(drum roll please!) NEGAN’S! Think about it. Eugine really emphasized that he felt she had betrayed him, and also, a few issues ago, he asked does HE know. I figure that whoever was the father (even though he wouldn’t know Rosita was pregnant) would still be quite upset that she was beheaded. And we haven’t seen Negan’s reaction to this new yet. PLUS, wouldn’t it be even more of a betrayal to not only Eugene but to all of the communities if she had had an affair with Negan while he was in custody. And, I mean, he’s been in that cell for 2 years, someone other than Rick or Carl has to have talked to him at some point, so it’s entirely possible that they could have spoken. Any feedback on this theory? I absolutely loved this issue, and I can’t wait for the next one!

      No. There is no way.
      1) It was Negan that was indirectly responsible for killing Abraham. Though they had parted their relationship, it was still Abraham.
      2) So, did she steal a key and open the cell to get in, just relying on luck that Negan wouldn’t use this chance to break out? Or did they bump uglies through the bars which would have been somewhat unpleasant.
I’m saying that this theory has .000001% chance of being true. Nor would I want it to be true.

      • QuinnCapeSurvives says:

Good points, both of them! However, both have workarounds. Negan can be very charismatic and persuasive, so it’s possible that he could have conviced Rosita that he had not ordered Dwight to kill anyone, and he (Dwight) had acted on his own. And for your second point, take his hair into consideration. It was quite long when we first see Negan in ‘A New Beginning’, but had he been going his hair out his cell for years since the war, it would have been much longer than that. It’s possible that Rosita could have been the one to clean him a previous time, and he could have talked to/seduced her then. Or she could have taken a key from Rick or Andrea. You do have some very good points though, and in no way do I think this theory is 100% correct.

I don’t understand why baby daddy is so important anyway. This isn’t The Young and the Restless, it is a zombie story of survival! Sadly, she is dead anyway so we will never know this baby. It seems like with all the cliffhangers in the story, this is the least important to the whole community.
But… what if it was Father Gabriel!

Well, I mean, if it was Negan, he’d be pissed at the wisperers for killing her. And no matter who it is, Robert Kirkman said that they would play a role in the story going forward in issue 146’s letter hacks.

When I first saw this cover it was cut off on the bottom and looked like Rick was dropping a microphone. Instead of All Out War 2.0 maybe Rick will find another way. United Community Karaoke and the Whisperers are invited, no decapitation without representation this time though. Alpha can do “Heads will Roll” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Carl -Hit me with your best shot, Eugene 99 Problems. I can’t think of anything for Rick, maybe Mmmbop or something.

Actually, at this time, now more than ever, it would make sense for Rick to (secretively) seek guidance from Negan. Negan has a very particular skill set that makes him absolutely dangerous in a situation like this.
I doubt there will ever be redemption with Negan. Its not his character. He might not even be released. But at this point, Rick needs to pick his brain more than anyone else’s. Negan ruled with an iron fist. He damn near crushed Rick’s group. It could have gone either way. The man knows how to fight a war. Something Rick has forgotten.
Fear will keep the local survivors in line. Fear of this Negan.

Alright…. read the issue over again on the porcelain throne, where I do most of my critical thinking. Basically, it comes down to this:
RICK: Shave your beard, get rid of that stupid Friar Tuck haircut, drop the claw and grow some balls. It’s time to kill farmer Rick and bring back the Ricktator.

Most people without limbs aren’t too savvy on just throwing their prosthetic limbs away just because they look more badass without them. Just saying.

Lets separate fiction from reality…. yes. I realize that.
This is clearly in the context of the series.

WOW. A cover that actually conveyed an event that took place in the issue and didn’t just tease you with something much more grand? Am I going mad?

I don’t really care what Negan does to help fight these Whisperers (Which we know he will be reached out to for guidance). When this new war ends, Maggie should be the one to take Lucille to Negan’s skull.

The last time Maggie knocked Rick out was when Negan killed Glenn…
It seemed inevitable that those two would be in conflict, especially with their different methods of dealing with a threat. Maggie’s way may make sense on the surface, but I can understand why Rick is the real leader. Using violence to solve things can only work to a certain point…
And will someone note that Rick hit Maggie by accident, please? He did not mean to hurt her. And I think that he let her pummel him to show just how wrong it is lead with your emotions in a crisis. Whether or not she will learn her lesson from this, I cannot say… But I am sure now that as we head toward #150, there will be some very weird and frightening moments for all concerned…
And I am also sure that someone will be dumb enough to let Negan loose…again…
    Just my thoughts…

This is completely random and irrelevant to issue #146, which btw was powerful and a good read, but has anyone else noticed that in the world of the Walking Dead holding hands means having sex? I decided to reread the entire series while I’m not busy at work and I was reading issue #7 and saw that panel with Shane and Lori getting it on and realized that it wasn’t the first time that they’ve done that. 130 issues later they did the same thing in #137 with Carl and Lydia right after the eye socket licking…and also holy shit that cover for #149 is easily one of the best covers yet.

I’m still thinking Alpha is gonna come into the community and act as head of the Saviors. Clearly the majority of the whispers don’t give a care about Lydia. Furthermore, Alpha was likely pressured by her community to make the first move towards Rick. She is gonna realize the power of the community system, leave the Whispers, and ultimately help the Grimes Unified Territories win.
And wouldn’t it be nifty if her real name was Lucille…?

Hands down the most beautiful cover done yet. The colors are striking and really stood out on the comic book shelf. Seriously the art (along with the story) has only gotten better since the time jump.

Once again (and why should anyone be surprised, right?) the cover is misleading for what the issue actually gives us. Yes, we see Maggie give Rick one hell of a left….but one could reasonably take from this that Maggie and Rick are going to be at major odds with one another. Instead, Rick falls down, Maggie says she’s sorry, and we get a reaffirmation of family between the two. This is way better than I feared. Rick is still a great leader…thinking of the group and their survival over his own wants and needs….and Maggie is becoming a great leader in her own right. I did not want to see these two at odds. They are going to be faced with some serious shit soon, I’m sure, and they will probably need each other’s strength.

After reading the comments I and thinking that Rick dies from the Whisperers. There’s gonna be another zombie Invasion courtesy of the whisperers. Maggie will be the new Rick Grimes. Carl is going to become a Renegade OR Him& Negan will join up and go do there own thing together.

Excellent issue. I really feel for Rick having to deal with the grieving families demanding a resolution to the situation (going to war, exacting revenge) without understanding the full consequence of doing so, while having to deal with the loss of his own friends.
It’s good to see Maggie and Rick bring their differences to a head and work it out – pretty low blow of Rick though to bring Hershel into the argument.
I can understand Eugene’s idea of using Lydia against Alpha (she is clearly one of Alpha’s weak points), however, I don’t think Alpha would have let Lydia go with Carl if she thought they might try to use her against the Whisperers… or maybe she was just emotional and not thinking clearly? And another point, if the Whisperers sense weakness in their leader, they’ll just take her down, then Rick et al will have no leverage whatsoever!
Can’t wait to see how they solve this and exact revenge for the murders. Rosita was the one that affected me most. I hope Eugene comes up with a device that can either wipe out the horde… or lead them away – maybe they would respond to a supersonic signal (I know the Pied Piper idea has been used in the novels) and Michonne and Siddiq would lead them to Siddiq’s boat and sail away so the walkers all end up in the ocean 🙂 That wouldn’t be as exciting as having the entire horde invade the town though, so who knows??
The next cover shows Andrea leading Carl and Lydia… where?

I didn’t care for Maggie for a while. Eugene was one of those annoying creatures. Loved Rick. Now Rick made me disgusted, Maggie is somewhat awesome, Rick’s a pussy, Eugene is humble but fierce, Rick hit Maggie, there’s gonna be punishment but Rick’s wanting to wait, Rick actually hit Maggie, Eugene thinks he’s got a pawn but he really doesn’t, I don’t like Rick anymore… oh I am so discombobulated!
