TWD Cast on How They Want Their Characters to Die

Entertainment Weekly (which has been killing it with amazing coverage by Dalton Ross) recently sat down with The Walking Dead cast and asked them a very peculiar, but relevant, question. How would they want their characters to die?

ANDREW LINCOLN (Rick)
I’ve always said, I don’t care how it goes, but maybe a kid should take me out. It’s funny, because I was in the car yesterday, and I texted Scott Gimple and I said, “Promise me, when I die, on the credits sequence, you play Johnny Cash’s version of ‘Hurt.’” And he just said, “I can’t make that promise obviously.” So when I die, please print it in your magazine so that the fans will know to play it, even if we can’t. Even if Scott Gimple decides not to, please everybody play “Hurt.”

NORMAN REEDUS (Daryl)
If I had my druthers on how I would go, I would just walk away. You would just see him walk down a road like Mad Max and I’d get smaller and smaller and smaller and smaller, and then a little dog would run on the road with me and just start following me off into the sunset, and you’d never know what happened to him. I would wanna go out like that. Just like, “You remember that dude? What happened to that dude?”

I’d run Andy out of the neighborhood with the music I listen to. He’d do the same to me. We would each have to have a fantastic set of earbuds.

Mine is all over the place but one genre I can’t do is country. I tolerate some of the songs played on the show simply because they fit well (Blackbird Song…I had to DL that one).

          • Cheryl Anne says:

Never thought that song was country. More Blues maybe. There is the Bluegrass song Rick listens to in the garden. But not a lot of country.

            Johnny Cash is country. 😛

          • Cheryl Anne says:

I know Johnny Cash is country. I thought you meant “Blackbird Song” was country.

          • Bastet says:

Some songs on the show are close to country, if not. But they fit the show. I’ve watched a show or two where the music was totally wrong & it drew my attention away from the action.

          • Cheryl Anne says:

Yeah, some of the songs are way out there. The ones I mentioned early are some of my favorites, including “Space Junk,” “Lead Me Home,” and “You Are Wilderness.” Not a fan of Tom Waits, sorry Emily Kinney.

They need to throw in some more Lynyrd Skynyrd for Abraham in place of The Gov!

          • Cheryl Anne says:

EEEk! Yes! In fact, I have two Lynyrd Skynyrd songs picked out for my next fan fiction. 😀 “Searching” and “I Need You.”

hahahaha, I need to play “I’m A Man” from S1E2 when I do my manly cosplay. XD

          • Cassi says:

I like country very selectively. I can’t not like Johnny Cash. The man’s a legend.

      • Ian Hopper says:

Just in case some folks were not in-the-know, Hurt was performed by Cash but not written by him. Trent Reznor wrote it for his “Downward Spiral” album. Reznor approved of Cash’s cover though, as he was quoted as saying:

“I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn’t mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure.”

Not sure which one I’d prefer to hear if they give Andy the axe… I think I might have to watch it twice, once with each version. To me, the ending of Reznor’s original echoes the tones of TWD and it’s edgy, creepy music, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see, right?

I love the song “Hurt”! I love Johnny Cash! So glad Andy and I have the same taste. While perusing my music for songs to influence my TWD fan fiction, I listened to “Hurt.” I thought to myself that is definitely a Rick Grimes song. I saved it to a playlist I call “Fan Fiction Use.” 😀 So, yeah, SCOTT GIMPLE, you better play that song!! That would be absolutely awesome!! XD I got your back, Andy!

Not a fan of TV Carl (I chalk it up to poor acting? Sometimes his lines just don’t sound right). It has tainted my interest in him in the comic book as well, unfortunately.

Kinda the opposite for me….I didn’t care for Carl in either one at first, but then as I got caught up on the comic, he really stood out for me there. Comic Carl helps me tolerate show Carl, who falls short in comparison the same way Andrea did. Only, there was a much larger margin with Andrea!

When I started reading the comic books, I realized how much better comic book Andrea was compared to show Andrea. A big difference. Love comic book Andrea!

That’s unfortunate. He’s easily one of the best characters. His psychological development in the world of zombies (which is much faster and blunt in the comics) is a wonder to behold.

Chandler Riggs has said in several interview that he himself(not the character of Carl Grimes) would actually commit suicide in the event of an apocalypse.
Pretty grim for such a young kid.

Well… That’s unexpected… I would actually want the apocalypse to happen just to see how people would react. And I’d love to try to survive.

Johnny Cash’s version of “Hurt” is such an amazing song that it deserves to last at least as long as this commentary. No joke.

Daryl’s story ending like that would be stupid…as it would mean he has a chance of returning to steal more comic moments from other characters. He needs to die incredibly brutally to apologize for those who have had to suffer through his crappy storylines.
