By now most fans have learned that Avengers Infinity War’s biggest cameo, Red Skull, was played by The Walking Dead’s Ross Marquand. Entertainment Weekly caught up with the Aaron actor to find out how he landed the role AND kept it a secret from everyone. “The biggest thing that Marvel wanted to do was come as close to the iconic role that Hugo Weaving did seven years ago and pay homage to it while also giving it a new flavor,” Marquand said.
Weaving has been notoriously non-committal towards the idea of reprising the role since playing it 7 years ago, so in his absence Marquand ensured he didn’t sully the character. “I wanted to first and foremost pay homage to what Hugo did because I think Hugo did an exceptional job, and I was frankly honored to step into those shoes because I just thought he absolutely rocked that role in The First Avenger,” Marquand said. A huge Red Skull fan growing up, Marquand prepared for the role by repeatedly watching Captain America, re-reading the source material, and melding Weaving’s Matrix performance with his German Red Skull accent to perfect the voice.
