Here are some excerpts from a recent article from AMC, where fans submitted their questions to Scott Gimple! We picked our favorites and pasted them below:
Q: For this Season Finale, how did you decide whom will survive and who wouldn’t? Which factors do you use to make this decision? – Ming Lee
A: We were fulfilling the overall stories that we had from the beginning of the season. And with those stories — though anybody could die at any time — it doesn’t mean that they have to. It seemed like somewhat of a stretch to do that. I don’t ever want to use it for just shock value. Deaths can be totally random, actually; there doesn’t have to be this giant, built story that leads to a death. In this case we had decided it really wasn’t a part of the stories we were doing. If in fact every finale had death, that would be pretty predictable. We don’t want people setting their watches by The Walking Dead deaths.
Q: Do you have any ratio in mind of doom and despair vs. hope and happiness when you plan out the season? – Lou81
A: I definitely do not have an exact ratio, but I do think it is incredibly important with every show to portray both darkness and light, otherwise neither one means anything. Even in the very difficult circumstances and heartbreaking landscape that they’re in, they’re human beings. And human beings do find hope and they do find love and they do find moments where they can laugh, even. And I think that sort of thing makes for the darker stuff to be even more heartbreaking. Episode 14, “The Grove” was a real example of sweetness and bitterness, and then sweetness again. To go through something as horrible as that and still come out the other side with a story of forgiveness — I was just really thrilled. I don’t think hope is looked at [enough]; hopelessness is en vogue, so I think it’s really cool that hope is a little punk rock.
Q: What kind of person would survive the best in an apocalypse: someone who is an adult when the apocalypse starts (like Rick), someone who is a child when the apocalypse starts (like Carl) or someone who was born during the apocalypse and doesn’t know the world before (like Judith)? – Dorrie
A: I would say if someone like Judith can make it to adolescence, I think they’re probably best equipped to survive. But making it to adolescence at that age is a pretty difficult thing in this world.
I have always said that what makes the shocking moments more shocking is when you have hope only for it to be taken away at any moment. Without hope, what are we really left with in the show? It would be like watching SAW 19 (or whatever they are up to) not really caring who lives or dies and just waiting for the next death. It was nice to have none of the main cast die in the last episode, because it served the story, not just for the sake of killing someone.
I agree with you 100% on that one . That episode was great on so many levels.
Jason what else do you watch. And what are you thoughts on the walking dead spin off. I mean me you bastet and stuart would be a good crew to be on it
Game of thrones, Bates motel, Being Human , American Horror Story , Orange is the new Black , Lilyhammer. I think the new show will be very good it seems like they are taking their time on it plus Kirkman is involved and I doubt he will let them butcher his franchise so I have really high hopes for it . What do you think ?
How’s Bates Motel? I wish I could find the first season without Netflix.
Its really good the guy that plays Norman Bates is a phenomenal actor his mother is awesome too it has very good writers .
The mother plays in “Orphan”…you seen that?
Yes seen it and I liked it she also was in The Conjuring.
The Conjuring was a good movie
Oh no doubt my hopes are extremely high for the show. Plus it needs to be on when the walking dead is not on to help us through the long waiting spell
Yes that would be a smart move .
I want to see the new show from a medical science point of view.
That would be different
I’m 2.5 hrs’ drive away…wouldn’t be nothing but a word!
Where you be?
I know you’re in the Dirty South too…I’m in SC…where you?
BAMA Roll Tide!!!!!!!!!
Lol! Jason coming from the north…we got ’em FLANKED!
No doubt they shant be going no wheres
Yeah you are spot on with that one Stuart. I’ve seen one of the Saw films and I despised it but i’m a Walking Dead devotee. The Saw films might appeal more to the proverbial “too slow, too much character development, not enough blood and death this season..” comment I frequently saw. I absolutely loved all the adapted comic scenes this year. Season 4, from top to bottom, was one of the most dynamic seasons yet.
“Saw” ends up with a plot…you just gotta make it to #4 to really see it. However, it primarily appeals to those who just wanna see some gore & inventive methods of killing.
There are loads of people out there that love the SAW films, my problem with them is simply that i have no investment in any of the characters in the film, the only reason i can see for watching them was to see what gruesome way the next person would be killed, and because i wait all the time for the next death when it does happen i’m kind of “meh”. its just not shocking.
I didn’t like it at first. I remember a big debate online as to whether or not it was better than “The Grudge” (I don’t see how anyone could compare, as the stories are totally different) & “The Grudge” is my all time favorite scary movie. Then, when the hype was over, I went back to revisit “Saw”. It still didn’t work for me until I got to #4. Then I went & bought every DVD.
lol bastet, that the kind of thing i would do,
Buying every DVD? You should see my Walking Dead franchise collection, lol! My family thinks I’ve LOST it!
Yeah buy them all, like when I saw 1 episode of breaking bad, I thought it was excellent so went out and bought the lott lol.
What other shows do you watch?
Big bang theory, how a met your mother, south park, agents of shield, was a big 24 fan when was on, you?
Supernatural, Arrow, Sons of anarchy, Justified, American Horror Story.Grimm.Hannibal ,Agents of Shield
I don’t watch much TV but Hannibal’s another show I keep up with!
oh and Game of thrones, only just got in to that, watched all 3 season in about a week now I have to sit around waiting for season 4 to start 🙁 not to long of a wait though
I really like Hannibal but there is talks it is going to get cancled
I hadn’t heard of cancellation but there’s only so much more they can do with the show. We know how it ends & they’re quickly closing the gap.
Yeah it;s been really good. I know it almost didn’t get a second season
when i see a picture of Chandler Riggs: CLAIMED!
I must admit I was a saw fan. I liked the way it all unfloded even thought it took it FOR EVER to do it
I was shocked that there was no major character death, but shock doesn’t equal disappointment. I found it refreshing that I got the unexpected & that I can’t predict future finales.
From all the predications, no one, not one comment thought that no one would die, it was a great way for the whole thing to play out, and very unexpected.
That’s what makes the games work so effectively. The happy moments are precious. You feel them. And because of that every dark moment is so much worse.
Where is Chris Bigger ?
He’s blowin’ up the post on that funny video…you know he’d head for that 1st.
Indeed lol
everyone thinks that they steaks mary keeps cooking up are people….but explain me this, why would they waste their own meal on people they will feed to others? It just keeps going around in a circle…no definate explanation! But, what say they drugged the steaks to make the groups pass out, to make them easier to pack in to the train car? I definately think they are eating people- notice the skeletons pulled of their meat as Carl, Michonne, Rick, and Dary run away from the termites. But I dont think its people that they were trying to feed the groups. I think the: “WE FIRST ALWAYS” on the wall of the creepy-ass shrine means that they will alway be the first priority- even if that means eating others. plus, realize that Gareth says: “The people here become a part of us.” Part of their stomach, and part of the shrine. This is just my opinion.
Only small groups of victims trickle in here and there because large groups aren’t travelling all together. They can keep people alive for a little while, just on water. I’ve read where people mentioned doping the meat to drug their victims but that also means that they are poisoning their own source of food, unless they separate it… highly unlikely, because cannibals are cannibals because they are starving. They look too put together to have deeper issues like “The Hills Have Eyes” inbreds. They are probably picking off their victims one by one while giving the others water & the BBQ is for their own.
I think Carl would just because he knows how to survive outside of the apoctaliptic world and inside it
Gareth, in my opinion is luring in survivors to have them hauled to Negan as tribute. The comics ( that I have only browsed ) have Negan demanding supplies from the outposts. Why would it not also mean that he demanded disposable people? People to go on runs, be bait for walkers, whatever is going on with Negan will have to be 10 times more severe than what the Governor was doing. His people (the ones with skills and strength) where disposable. So I think they use the rail system as a way to travel between outposts and as a highway for Negan to collect. I wrote in the recap and discussion forum my predictions of season 5 episode 1 about them being fed the buried guns from Carol and Tyrese. Though I didn’t finish my prediction, this is ultimately where I was going to lead.
“I think it’s really cool that hope is a little punk rock.” Scott Gimple, what a fucking poser/tool.
