The Walking Dead Casts “Jesus”

IT’S OFFICIAL:

The Walking Dead has cast Tom Payne (known for his role in HBO’s “Luck”) to play fan favorite Paul Monroe AKA Jesus in Season 6. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Payne will soon become a series regular with an option to appear in Season 7 and beyond.

First introduced in The Walking Dead Issue #91, Jesus is a highly skilled, logical man that joins Alexandria from the Hilltop Colony after encountering Rick’s group. Although it’s unsure how long his story arc will last, Jesus is currently still alive in the comics and plays a major role in the All Out War story arc that features notorious villain Negan.

TWD comic fans have been patiently waiting the introduction of Negan this season and this casting announcement might pave the way for that story to come to fruition.

He looks kinda young to play Jesus. Maybe with long hair and a beard he’ll look older?

Just looked him up and he’s 32. I bet a beard and some apocalypse wear will age his appearance.

This is a great casting he looks the part definately the scariest thing is as we see more charactors being introduced we get further into the comics and we will lose some great charactors or will we?

I am disappointed. Jesus is my role model and means so much to me and I feel like they didn’t even try. The bts pictures are ok, he looks sort of like Jesus but I feel like they didn’t even try to find a good enough Jesus. Like the casting people were like “eh he’s a little cute so fangirls will like he plus he’s British so ok” instead of casting someone who could actually play the badass, cool, capable and amazing character. “We try hard to cast fan favorites” what a joke. People who actually like the casting are fangirls who didn’t read the comics and only like him for his looks.

Are you familiar with this actor’s work? I’ve never seen him myself so I’m going specifically by his looks & I think they chose well! And he’s one of my top characters in the comic.

Does this actor have a martial arts background? I always think of Jesus as a Bruce Lee type, this guy looks like he couldn’t fight his way out of a one direction concert.

Not gonna lie here, I saw a picture of him in costume… He looks much too scrawny.
Still, I won’t be harshing on him or anything until we see him in action. He might be perfect! Appearance wise, though, he just seems a little small.

I am fine with the casting now. I feel like I overreacted and that was mostly due to people hating on Jesus as a character based off of the actor who is playing him. I am defensive of Jesus because he is important to me personally. Tom will do a great job as Jesus I’m sure after checking out some of his work.

I think he’ll make a good Jesus. He seems to embody the role well; at least in appearance so far. He looks amazing in costume; spitting image of Jesus’ first appearance. The only reservation I have with Payne portraying Jesus is his weight and stature. Now, when he’s in full costume(the issue #91 and #92 outfit) he looks fine it’s hard to discern anything under all those layers. That being said; I’ve always perceived Jesus as about 6’1″ and 180lbs to 190lbs. Lean, swift and agile; but still an undeniably large man. This would be an easy fix though; all Payne has to do is hit the gym and bulk up and extra 20 pounds or so.
I technically have one other qualm; but in all fairness is would be premature and baseless to pass judgement at this point. That being said; Jesus has always been a very imposing and intimidating character in a subtle, cold and calculating type of manner. He give some of the best stare downs and evil eyes in the series. He possesses a quiet ferocity and exudes strength and resilience. Without trying he walks around with and air that lets other people know he is an extremely formidable opponent and that he is one not to be trifled with. Now, I’ve never seen any examples of Payne’s acting and it could be he portray these type of traits and characteristics very well and convincingly. I’ll have to reserve judgment until I see him in action.
