That “walker” up there is favoring a wounded shoulder….that & the issue title would indicate talking, feeling, & screaming.

    Yep. Somebody made walker camo.

It’s the only explanation. I mean, Kirkman loves messing with our heads, and he follows the Romero rules like it’s his religion. But then again, Bub from Day of the Dead was taught to speak (which I thought was kind of lame)

im guessing it is another talking walker before jesus. does anyone ese think that maybe kirkman is spinning off into the realm of a hybrid walker race of people who didnt quite turn all the way? maybe some with feelings for those still alive, but the greater of them with the urge to eat the living as with the regular walkers but vocal?

    Reply
    • JW Coombs says:

No, I think they’re going to wind up being feral, zombie assimilaters. It’s been done in other works of zombie fiction. These broken, traumatized people, who adopt a “can’t beat ’em, join ’em” mentality, and choose to live amongst the dead. They completely assimilate, and regress to a primal/feral state, they walk with the herds day and night, and wander the streets aimlessly, only sleeping when there body literally forces them. In other books, they even feed on human flesh, attack the living, and even when people encounter these abominations and attempt to rehabilitate them, it is discovered they have even forgotten how to communicate with the living. It’s actually a very eerie, and unnerving thing. I really enjoyed it in other books, and I think Kirkman could knock it out of the park.

I was thinking that if they really are talking walkers, and not people in camo, this would be about right.

What the fuck? Are the walkers actually going to start talking? This is a weird but interesting twist. If they are evolving or turning back into humans this is going to drastically change TWDs story.

Ok, so this has got to be the “zombie that responds to pain” that Kirkman was talking about at the SDCC comic panel. He said, we would be encountering some “strangeness” soon, which included the discovery of a zombie who responds to pain. This appears to be exactly that. It looks as if Jesus was doing what Jesus does best, slaying scores of the undead, when all the sudden, he slashes at a corpse, and the corpse let’s out a howl, a blood curdling scream, and falls to it’s knees, gripping it’s wounded shoulder, wailing in agony. This is why Jesus has a look of utter shock and disbelief on his face. From whispers to screams; first we have Marcos experience, and paranoid ramblings about the talking dead; and now Jesus’s first hand encounter with a screamer, a zombie who can feel pain, and respond to it.

Now, my theory, is that the voices herd by Marco, and this screaming, pain-feeling walker, is that they’re actually feral-zombie-pretenders. This type of apocalyptic-crazy-person has been addressed in several works of zombie fiction. These deranged folks, who’s pysche and every other part of their being was crushed by the events of the outbreak. They lost it, completely slipped their tether, and for one traumatic reason or another, they think “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” is there best bet, and choose to live amongst the dead. The completely assimilate, and regress to a primal, feral state of existence. They even eventually go so far as feeding on human flesh, as that is their only means of sustenance when living as part of a herd. Anything else would cause alarm amongst the actual dead. The ones from World War Z, and other books,(they had a specific name for them, but I can’t remember)would even attack the living just like the actual zombie would. They were so far gone when people found them and tried to rehabilitate them, that they didn’t even remember how to speak. One thing that held true about these people, across all the different novels, was that they were damn creepy. And people struggled to understand their choice, as do I. It was a really cool aspect of the apocalypse, as well all know, a ZA would definitely create some strange circumstances, and completely new things. It was one of those unnerving, skin-crawling abominations manifested by the plague. Also, it’s really not that far fetched at all. I could definitely see Kirkman taking this route; I had hoped we would eventually see some feral children or something; but this is even better if it’s true.

If this were true, you’re talking about people changing in just a mental capacity, how would they be able to walk among real walkers, who can obviously sense the living?

      Reply
      • JW Coombs says:

The same way Rick did it in Atlanta, and in “No Way Out”, except they get so far gone to a point that the walkers themselves can’t tell them apart.

But, for what it’s worth, the other novels in which they used this type of person. There is always a point where the pretenders betray themselves somehow, and get devoured by their very own herd. Even if they’ve been living amongst them for years. So, it’s not exactly foolproof, but not so far-fetched that it couldn’t work either.

They used the walker camo in the Telltale games also. To sneak through herds. It’s a theme throughout the franchise. I’m not 100% convinced yet but until I hear a better one I like this theory. Now if I can just find the part in World War Z with the psycho human zombies to see what they are called.

but if you haven’t noticed, the camo should’ve been gone because last issue, when Marco heard the whispers it was raining heavy, Just like what happened to Rick and Glenn in Atlanta, the zombie goo should’ve been washed away and the heard should’ve noticed them.

I can see walking amongst them being possible, I’m just not sure how they’d be able to eat without giving themselves away. If they’re traveling with a group, they would most likely have to fight off a bunch of zombies in order to get to the person, and we haven’t seen any zombie fights over a fallen body yet. I guess they could just tear off a piece and eat while walking, but considering how they usually crowd around the victim, I think the zombies would know something’s up once they saw that.

I hope Kirkman isn’t going with the whole evolving zombie route. He’s stated that it would NEVER happen and I hope he sticks with that and instead, is doing what you’re saying.

I agree with what other people are saying that the person kneeling infront of jesus is not really a walker but a person with walker camo.

I don’t think the walkers could evolve because what would they evolve from? Bits of tattered flesh and the half rotted brains kept in their mushy skulls.

The last thing we need is for humans to learn how to camouflage themselves from walkers, the book would get boring very quickly.

It never seems to work very well or for that long, but for humans to be able to completely mask their scent enough to live among a herd? How does the comic come back from that? How would anyone EVER be in danger again? Oops, forgot my zombie repellent!

Remember, that guy said he heard whispers in the herd. Maybe the kneeling walker isn’t a walker. Its a human and thats why Jesus is shocked.

Except that it was raining very hard during the whisper scene and we know the “guts&blood camouflage” washes off in the rain.

The “talkers” are either humans with some sort of natural camouflage or some new kind of walkers.

    Alright… Where to start?
The atmosphere on the volume cover is really nicely done! That red sky just screams bloodshed. I have a little issue with this new group of survivors. How the hell does Yumiko keep her hair so clean and straight? And Magna’s hair looks majestic as fuck! Same with Connie. How does she keep her hair that short and curly in the late zombie apocalypse?

Also what’s up with that stripper walker?

Anyway, here’s a little doodle I did at school. I’m aware that white is not spelled “wight”

Everyone’s worried about the walkers evolving. My question is how are they still walking around??? It had been about a year and a half when Eugene noticed the walkers getting weaker and are able to starve, then Heath discovered that walker outside of Alexandria in an extremely advanced state of decay. Now it’s been over two years and they’ve hardly changed? What’s up with that?

The way I think about this is that people become walkers at different times, so there are walkers at different stages of decomp. There would also be differences, depending on where a walker has been….for instance, a walker who’s been loafing around in a house or building for a while could be less rotten than one who’s been walking out in the sun.

On the flip side, this could point to a slow down/pause/gradual reversal of decomp, which would support this new possibility of talking walkers!

Yeah, I am thinking the same thing as @disqus_snfPz6cxAM:disqus. The O.G. Walkers have probably withered up and ceased to shuffle about. However, new Walkers are created every single time someone dies and people die every day, especially as the world grinds to a halt. Endless cycle of hungry walkers at all stages of decomp.

The problem is that no one seems to understand the way evolution actually works; kinda like the way Kirkman didn’t seem to understand they way grenades worked during AOW. Walkers already infected would not evolve. The virus could mutate changing the behavior of new walkers, but old walkers wouldn’t suddenly evolve the ability to communicate. Evolution takes place when mutations occur between generations. Evolution usually takes centuries to occur for a behavior such as communication to happen. You fuckers are so getting Kirkman trolled it’s not even funny anymore.

If u look at the pic of the zombie on the cover it looks like it is holding its shoulder were it was cut. So I think it is a human in zombie camo.

to go from stupid as hell straight to talking without any in between or even a nod toward walker evolution would be a little much, but I’m not ruling it out. for me, its got to be walker camo but hopefully its a new type of walker camo. like some crazy walker flesh suit or something. but kirkman proves again and again you can’t predict what’ll happen next. the most resent example, i bet every single reader guessed negan would get the newbies on his side

Kirkman has made it crystal clear that the walkers WILL NOT evolve or get stronger or smarter. That’s fact. But wow the cover of 134 looks great! What if it’s not the walker he’s looking at but what or WHO the walker is eating!? Maybe the walker is a current or past character!?

I personally hope not. It’d ruin the comics, the game and the show if they introduced it there too. I don’t want the walking dead to become a Romero movie or a CW show. The shipping, Norman worship, the mistakes they already made (examples: Andreas death and portrayal, the governor arc) is already bringing down the show and ruining it for die hard comic fans. So I don’t want the comic to go down the same path. Now I love the show but these mistakes and what not are apparent.
