THE WALKING DEAD issue #159 is out, and hopefully you’ve read it, dreamt about it reading it, dreamt about dreaming about reading it, dreamt about how you dreamt about dreaming of reading it, realized that Skybound was just trying to use Inception to plant TWD fandom in your subconscious, and are now ready to comment. That almost certainly being the case, let us know what you thought down below! We’ll be awarding our favorite comment with a signed issue of THE WALKING DEAD #159!

PREVIOUSLY: Gabriel is the first casualty of war. The Kingdom has sent its best men to aid Rick while the Saviors sit on the sidelines. As the first wave of walkers hits Dwight’s army, Michonne and Jesus arrive with reinforcements. In the fray, Beta blindsides Dwight, but Negan—motherf’ing Negan—comes to the rescue.

Well, I guess Lucille finally cracked under the pressure. I mean, as soon as Beta said “Knife to meet you!” she totally struck out. I guess he really wanted to get back at Beta, but it was just a swing and a miss. How about that one whisperer trying to take off Beta’s mask? Beta really got the point across there. You guys really swung for the fences on this issue, and overall, it was a home run.

Today we mourn a beloved piece of wood, wrapped lovingly in barbed wire by her owner Negan who is obviously upset in this trying time. Lucille was a prickly sort who didn’t beat around the bush. She was very hard hitting and often hit the nail on the head. She loved Asian food and was always thirsty. We ask that you hold those who loved her in your hearts today and perhaps raise a glass to the saviour of the former leader of the Saviours.
    RIP Lucille

Noooo! Saddest death in TWD history! RIP Lucille! I can’t believe that Kirkman did this! I knew this war would have casualties, but not like that… Also, I knew that Beta wasn’t going to die this early, but dragging him away like Stannis at the Battle of Blackwater was a tad cheap. Still, the fact that he killed Lucille sets him up as the ultimate rival for the now reformed Negan. As for Lydia, the “you’re too young for me” excuse doesn’t really work when you’ve already screwed his brains out several times. Carl is right, she just doesn’t want him too attached to her when things go to hell very soon. I think that Lydia is also aware that Carl and Sophia hooking up is the most obvious and inevitable thing ever. After Kirkman’s “brilliant” foreshadowing in this issue, no one can deny this. Lydia doesn’t want to get in the way of the law that all men in the Grimes family are required to have a blonde, freckled, Atlanta love interest.

dont ya think it gets a little smelly or hot under those skin suits? is there a whisperer brand of deodorant spray for your stinky skin mask? theres a huge potential market there. i wonder if things got awkward between beta and his buds after he just stabbed one of his soldiers in the head…with all this going on in our view, i wonder what is coming for the hilltop/kingdom. William actually looks like he could handle being a leader for the kingdom. very badass moment for him. i wanna see rick get his hand and his hook dirty in this war. theres no way this whole thing blows over without him getting scrappy with some whisperers. very excited for the next issue.

I love Negan’s is distraught reaction to Lucille’s destruction. It was both psychotic and endearing. And Beta… Holy hell. Did he find the last remaining stockpile of HGH in the world? I was as shocked as Negan was. I am really enjoying Negan ais an antihero. I really hope they keep him as part of the group and he doesn’t do anything to screw this up. As for Carl and Lydia, I can’t say I’m too upset about that. She’s going to go off the deep end when she finds out mom’s dead anyways. Lastly, I’m enjoying Dwight’s new found confidence in himself. lastly, I’m enjoying Dwight’s new found confidence in himself .

Lucille, you no longer do Negan’s will…
But seriously, now I really have to keep up with Image+ to find out why he wailed like a sick woolly mammoth when he lost her.
And I think he needs a replacement quite soon.
Dwight played this one rather well: separate the herd into groups and pick out the ones that don’t just follow. And he does look good in the mask…

Just when there seemed to be NO WAY OUT and NO TURNING BACK, Negan showed Beta that he is SOMETHING TO FEAR in THIS SORROWFUL LIFE. And at the same time Negan showed Dwight that no matter WHAT WE BECOME and how much we are MADE TO SUFFER he is not TOO FAR GONE. Even Negan gets A NEW BEGINNING because all the MILES BEHIND US and all the DAYS GONE BYE show that strength, survival and unity is THE BEST DEFENSE against a LIFE AMONG THEM. Negan has experienced THE CALM BEFORE the storm, SAFETY BEHIND BARS, and A LARGER WORLD. He has witnessed what it’s like to be hunters and what it’s like to FEAR THE HUNTERS. He has led a MARCH TO WAR and has seen new LIFE AND DEATH. Negan declared a CALL TO ARMS to defend what he thought was right. But through the hell ALL OUT WAR and the agony of hearing the turn of WHISPERS INTO SCREAMS he has continued to find THE HEART’S DESIRE to keep fighting. Now HERE WE REMAIN, and as WE FIND OURSELVES we must ask, when the dust clears and THE WHISPERER WAR is over, WHAT COMES AFTER?

Lucille was one of the most evil but also loved ‘character’ in the comic.she did not want to use violence but she used violence many times to make people be afraid of her but also respect her.although she used violence only in very important situations. But in this war she wasn’t ready. She was locked in a closet so her battle performance was fallen, but she didn’t give up.she fell dead knowing that she has given every effort that was left.So she died as she would like.Like a real hero.

I was shocked when Lucille broke ! I felt for Negan in that moment. This whole thing has made me wonder if Negan’s death is being forshadowed. I mean think about it he is getting a chance to be a good guy, his backstory is being told, and when he was fighting Beta he more or less said that Lucille made him invincible and she broke almost right after that. Plus there is that eerie variant cover with him on it.
I thought Dwight was a really good leader in this issue. It was good to see that the groups were able to take out a decent amount of the Whisperers. Plus I wonder what exactly Dwight is going to do since he put on that zombie skin? It looks like he is going to try to sneak into their group but idk and I don’t think it would be a good idea for him to do that anyway.
As far as Carl and Lydia go yeah I wonder what was up with what she said to Carl. After all he has done for her and everything they have done it doesn’t really make sense. About the only way it does make sense is if Carl is right and she is saying that because she is scared one of them is about to die and she doesn’t want them to be attached when it happens.

It’s been a long month waiting for this payoff and it was worth the wait. I’d have been disappointed if Beta or Negan died but the loss of Lucille gives the fight an odd sort of gravity — plus, it showed us a bit more of Negan. I love Dwight and Negan so this issue just rocks.
Elsewhere, things are just ticking along. I’m interested in where this goes with the Sanctuary and Vincent… nowhere good I’m betting. And William seems like a nasty piece of work. I do wish we’d seen more of the Kingdom under Ezekiel; this scene would have had a lot more impact if we had much idea what it was like before. Great to see Sophia and Lydia annoys me so I’m not sad to see the end of that relationship.
Strangest scene was the 4 panels of Rick… even when the story has veered away from Rick before, it’s always felt like a detour before we return to him. This is the first time that a major lynchpin event has sidelined him. I’m glad because although Rick’s great, the comic has a fantastically diverse cast and I really want to see them developed. Particularly hoping for more from Magna and friends before the war is over.
This is what I love about the 16-panel format though: you get to see the scope of the universe and visit all the characters that usually wouldn’t be seen for months on end. I really hope it stays or, at least, that we continue to see the broader cast.

Lucille died doing what she loved: beating someone to death and cracking their skulls. Her reunion with Negan was beautiful, it gave him back power he needed to crush Beta. And then it happened. I have never seen Negan crying before. He gave Beta proper beating, too bad, that he couldn’t finish him off by sticking the wooden spike into his head. Fancy a rematch, Beta? But Negan is Negan. He was doing pretty well without Lucille, I guess Beta’s knives will suffice as a replacement, when he puts Beta’s head on a spike.
As for Beta, the scene where he woke up, killed his fellow Whisperer and then fell unconcious again, was priceless. Lydia was right, these people either kill or die. They don’t want to be people, they are animals. They have to be hunted down and killed to the last person. Whisperers lost this round, but I feel that they have already split their forces. Their herd was the biggest ever, Beta could have sent someone to storm the Hilltop, since its location is known to his group.
Lydia pretty much dumped Carl, that’s a backstab. I never liked her and I am afraid that she might be one of the reasons why we will see the Hilltop burn.
Dwight has become a leader and I can’t wait to see him infiltrating the Whisperers. Things might go horribly wrong for him among them. We are now in the middle and so far only Gabriel perished (if I don’t count unnamed troops), so someone else will be following him really soon. Damn, Mr Kirkman, do not kill Dwight!

Every. Single. Issue. The art Charlie does is just so breath taking! Especially that big herd coming out of the forest.. WOW! Another thing with his amazing art is the angles drawn to make such a much more impact on the scene. With Negan being held down by the walkers so he couldn’t get Beta, it really made you feel for how “far away” he felt in that scene. Props up for Charlie Adlard!! Also cant wait to hopefully see Dwight and his crew kill the whisperers from the inside out! this book never takes a moment to stop impressing me. (And making me cry.. RIP Lucille…)

Side note: can you imagine if Beta was like an evil pun version of Negan?
    “Knife to me you”
“Beta believe you ain’t seeing my face”
And if the two made up over Lucille and became road trip buddies?! The cringeworthy dialogue and slapstick comments would have endless possibilities!

How to tell if you were in a three-way gone bad: When it’s over, you’re left alone in tears holding a handful of wood from your girl was pulverized to death, and the other big guy splits the scene with a ‘broken’ back before you finished. Negan, just a word of advise, don’t let Lucille Two anywhere near Beta. The end result may not be the one you’d hoped for…
Seriously though, seeing Negan broken and crying after Lucille died was the most heartbreaking thing I’ve seen in The Walking Dead. She will forever be in our (and Negan’s) hearts, and will be truly missed. Hopefully, Negan gets his revenge on Beta McTwoKnives real soon for not treating her like a lady. RIP Lucille.

Heh. I love how distorted TWD has made us. We cheer when Father Gabriel dies, upside down and gutted, and we mourn the breaking of a baseball bat. I am not saying that is a bad thing, I reacted the same way as most of the folks on here did.
Poor Negan not only lost the love of his life, but Beta slashed his jacket! Holy Hell! Now if someone wrecks his “do” it might just break him.
Love Dwight, I hope he stays alive and in charge. As for the other camps, WTF? You would think the Kingdom would be 100% behind Rick concerning the Whisperers considering they murdered their leader. The Saviors, bah, they all need meds and counseling.
I love how the Whisperers talk. It is like the script of a bad movie. Ok and what in the heck could they have seen when they took off Betas mask? He is an ugly fucker? well yeah…

How dare you kill off Negan’s love, his pride and joy in life he waited so long to be reunited with her only for it to be ruined by Beta’s big ass. I told my parents about the issue and they said “Just get Negan a new bat” I was outraged but.. overall super excited for #160 comes out in November my birthday month gonna be the big 18… shit i’m getting old. When Negan says “She’s Dead” in reference to Lucille, is he referring to the bat, or his wife? Has it finally caught up with him that she’s gone and all along for Negan, her spirit and life were embodied in the bat? Now that the bat is gone, Lucille is gone? Did Negan just turn human?

I feel as if Negan is going to whip out that barbwire, take out his prick, and make Lucille 2.0 like he said he was going too.

Any, many, mini, moe, I am going to beat you with every blow. Oh. Lucille, why did you have to go. I just got you back, And now you break, this is hard for me to take. I was ready to deliver many more whacks, but now I am never going to hit another ones back.

I hope Eugene breathes life into Lucille and rebuilds it for Negan. Yeah Negan has been a dick to just about everyone in Rick’s group, but between Negan being devastated over the loss of Lucille, and Eugene being one of the more empathetic guys around, maybe he can take Lucille and encase it into metal or something

Anyone else think Beta might be the long lost Davidson? Maybe not.

I personally don’t think that Beta is someone we know. It’s just the way Whisperers live. He is Beta, his mask is his face, and nobody is allowed to see his real face.

Beta just got his ass handed to him by Negan in front of the whole Whisperer posse, after having just killed their Alpha. A couple seemed on board to keep Beta around as leader, but Negan clearly made an impression on these silent renegades that may inadvertently end the whisper wars. Perhaps through controlling the herd and demanding to be apart of the society Rick has built or to instead destroy it all. Seems a little nuts for Negan, but he just lost his love for a second time. He’s been on the edge for a long time now, I hope he decides to just jump off
    A few points:
    1) why not stab Beta with the broken bat? Lucille the bat? How about Lucille the mother fucking spear in your eyeball?
    2) why not make it out of metal in the first place? I’m breaking wooden bats on skulls daily
    3) how is that the idiot govenor and his goons found a tank like instantly, and y’all have 4 communities with over 2 years of peace and no heavy arsenal to use? Mines? Body armor? A grenade maybe? Make some fucking maltovs at least mane! bURN these whispers into screams
    4) Litterally the foreshadowing for this arc was Alexandria moving a massive herd around with horns. I don’t get what they’re doing in this slaughter. Why do they think that blasting horns will be ineffective against a couple people whispering “hey, you, ya the dead one, follow me this way” ?
I think for these missteps they all deserve to die… except for Michonne and Andrea. And maybe they can just submerge Rick’s severed head into a jar so he’s even more useless, but still technically alive.

      1) Seemed like a good idea, but Negan was too shocked to believe that he lost Lucille
      2) It may all be explained in HERE’S NEGAN
      3) The Governor and his men were literally next to a NATIONAL GUARD, which was clearer than Kim Kardashian’s… y’know, so they were stocked up. Rick and his people were already stocked with bullets that Eugene was making for guns they already had, but they couldn’t risk going into DC, which may still be filled with roamers. Also, they were still thriving. They literally just made bread from the mill and were making their first fair in Issue 127. They have made some pretty good progress so far in 2 years, especially for Alexandria, since that place was bombarded with grenades in All Out War. They have body armor, and there COULD be some leftover grenades from the Saviors’ attack, but mines are unlikely, I’d think. Molotov’s are a possibility that no one has yet done in the comic yet, I think.
      4) We’ve all already seen how sneaky the Whisperers can be in herds. In Issue 158, the Whisperers hid behind roamers and as soon as those zombies were shot, they jumped the communities’ soldiers with their blades. If someone was cranking up the horn, the Whisperers can hide within the first row of the herd closest to them and kill them within seconds. And if there are people rounding up the side of the herd like in Issue 127, the Whisperers can just jump on the horses like they did in Issue 158.

And dont get me started on FUCKING NEGAN lol this guy brings the good always.. hope he stays on our side.. Im interested to see how this growing conflict with the kingdom and its memebrs affects the story arc , i sense that its going to play a big roll in how this arc ends. any thoughts on that??? ps Rick continues to be further and further out of the picture 🙁 not feeling good about the future of our favorite sheriff.

I feel so bad for Carl he obviously really likes Lydia, so for her to just say that she doesn’t love him must really suck. Even though she probably just said it so that he wouldn’t worry about her while there battling the whisperers. Kind of like in the show when Glenn and Maggie first started dating and Glenn started getting shot at, and all he was thinking about was surviving for Maggie. I am excited for the next issue, because Carl and Lydia are on the cover and I really want to see more of them.

I marked out like a little girl at a One Direction concert when Dwight threw Lucille to Negan….only to have the magic tragically zapped away moments later.
    RIP Lucille.
