UPDATE!

Evolve3242 has WON the 153 comment contest! We really loved your take on Eugene’s story with the radio along with your Whisperer conspiracy theories! BUT…you have a WEEK to email us back with your contact info or we’ll give your signed copy to someone else! And that would be more sad than the Pistons’ effort against the Cavs in Round 1. Email us up!

THE WALKING DEAD issue number 153 is out and hopefully you’ve bought it, read it, mulled it over, cut it up for some artful decoupage, bought another copy, encased it in glass, and have built a worthy shrine that will be the envy of the neighborhood. That almost certainly being the case, let us know what you thought down below!

PREVIOUSLY: Eugene makes radio contact with a new group, but both sides need to build trust before real progress is made. Brandon attacks Rick, but is easily overtaken and humiliated. Instead of returning to Hilltop like ordered, Brandon makes a very rash decision, and frees Negan from his jail cell.

The thing about show is they know twd fans smart. But they keep trying to fool us instead of using source material. It doesn’t always need a twist. If it was Glenn it makes great sense to guide story to point in comic. If it’s Daryl luv Reedus but Daryl has no impact on story just fans. JDM nothing against him but for me and being censored didn’t bring the charisma or intimidation i want from Negan. On top physically felt Carl could kick his ass.

Well, I can see where this is going…
Negan, as long as the man has breath in his body, is going to be a nuisance. He may also be an ally. I do not expect the Whisperers to just roll over and accept him as one of them. There will be too much conflict between our divine Mr. N and Alpha. And when Negan wins that little sparring match, he will lead the Whisperers to…
Y’know what? I will stop there with that. I am getting more interested in Eugene and that CB partner, Dwight’s coziness with Lucille and the possibility that Alexandria is going to be on its own soon.
    Selah…

Kirkman likes clever lies. He wants the cover to be related… but not too related.

Think about it in this sense. The blood could have been anyone injured. Could be metaphorical. It’s still related, though. Rick has just learned the BAD side of having an army charged up against a common foe… your people become xenophobic. Heavy hangs the head. No choice goes without consequence.

Blood on Rick’s hands. Although it’s not entirely his fault that Negan escaped, he did piss off Brandon to the point where he let Negan out of his cell. That lies at the fault of Rick even though Brandon was the biggest fucking pussy lol

I usually thought of Lucille as a weapon of destruction, not as a scepter that could be passed along from one leader to the next. Such an interesting way to make an iconic weapon even more important in TWD’s universe!

A couple of things but i will start off with this, How awesome is it to have Negan out of that cell and instantly jumping into classic form? Does Negan go into the whisperers sancutary as an ally if so to whom? I also find the character development of Eugene to be absolutely genius. we find ourselves at a bit of a crossroads with this CB radio situation has Eugene found a new form of ally or is he unknowingly slipping the whisperers intel? please reply with what you think!

I think we should have seen this Negan arc coming the day Olivia (RIP) cut his hair… This HAD to be a clue to him coming back in force.

All I can say is this issue made up for the cock-tease of a season finale!

Negan is back in all his glory. Damn… being locked for a few years and the man doesn’t lose a single beat! That hug from Negan was like Kirkman hugging us, saying “Don’t worry. Everything will be OK.” I needed this after Sunday.

As always, great issue. Will he reclaim Lucille? Will the whisperers kill him? Are Michonne’s days numbered? And no sooner do I think we see Marco on the TV version does he get shot here. WTF!? Ahhh… unlike the next season of TWD, I can’t wait for next issue! Thank you Kirkman! Thank you!

Well, it’s great to see that Negan is back to his old ways….and by that I mean killing again. It’s no doubt he’s got something sinister in mind for Rick and the gang. Will he team up with the Whisperers and try and form a new team of “saviors” to take out Rick? He’s really good at manipulation and my try to persuade the “Alpha” whisperer to take out Rick and his team. Or he may just kill her and be the new leader of the whisperers. Either way, Negan is on the loose now, and it’s going to take a lot to stop him. He’s not going back to the cell. It’s going to be fight or die.

Negans back! It almost makes up for the on screen disaster of the Season 6 final but it doesn’t. :-p Nice to see Negan hasn’t lost his touch. I’m thinking he’ll either become the new Alpha or maybe his jail time softened him up a little. Maybe he’ll turn over a new leaf and be some sort of twisted diplomat to the Whisperers. Why doesn’t Dwight destroy Lucille if he looks at like a symbol? I think he might want to use it. It would be nice to see Dwight go off on Negan and smash Negans skull like Glenns.

Absolutely LOVED Magna in this issue. I need more of her. I want her to be a mainstay. She’s so real and shuts shit down fast. She’s just filled with common sense. She sees Alexandria is good and basically says “who fucking cares if we’ve been around long or not. We can’t afford to lose this.” I really want to see her become important. Maybe the first member in Carl’s future Avengers.

And I also LOVED Negan back at being Negan. Sorry, Brandon! Guess the Rose family line ends with you! Wonder if Negan might take the time to visit that other kid he actually likes…

I thought that was the point of the Internet. I couldn’t ugly-cry or smear poo @work/home. That leaves the interwebs. I was totally butt hurt by the TV show. The comic is still on top. I hate to admit it but I’m pretty sure I’m a fanboy of the comic. Unfortunately for Kirkman & crew the comic has set such a high bar the show has to be impeccable. The brutality of Negan dispatching a character that you cared for so quickly, begging for Maggie till his last breath. That shit was fucking brutal. I’ve never hated a fictional character so much in my life. It made me feel like I was in All Out War. The drive to get Negan was fierce. Sorry about the rant. There’s a point in there somewhere. 🙂

        –
I just think it’s hilarious that Kirkman/Gimple/Nicotero/etc gave us exactly what we love them for (a brutal shock) and it made most of us angry. Dude, of course they had to find some way to throw a twist in there. In a way it would be lazy (satisfying, yes, but lazy) to deliver exactly what we all shouted for years that we wanted. I just totally respect it and I’m sooooo pumped for Season 7.

A brutal shock in the story would be much better than “brutal shock” in the mechanic of telling that story, methinks. There are some very valid reasons people are upset.

Pretty much. I love a brutal shock in a story. That’s why I love The Walking Dead (comics). The crazy feels I get from reading it I didn’t think were possible. When I watch the show it’s like watching what I’ve read. There were two spots in the comic that made me go deep in my mind. When Rick chops off Jessie’s hand and when Negan crushes Glenn. It might sound silly but I’ve waited years to see those instances play out on screen. I feel like I was robbed of both for the sake of the TV only viewers. It felt gimmicky. I’ve have a lot of time invested with TWD. Since like 2004? Artistically I’m ok with it. I don’t like the execution though. Something with sooo much emotional value kind of squandered. The way it was executed lost the emotional value for me.

        • BarbaLucy says:

Amateur radio – ham radio – how far can they transmit ? a 3 minute google search tells me its not a simple answer. With enough power, other countries. Is that a big enough unit there? Eugene telling he’s from Texas gives away that he’s probably in North America. In a community with shootings during the day? He needs to tell someone or keep tighter lips. Its an exciting endeavor but he is putting his people in more possible danger. I wonder what kind of accent this person has. “Eugene, does your community partake in knife wielding bear-hugs and face-ironed assault squadron leaders? Over”

Did anyone else immediately think of Nick from FTWD when the person Eugene was talking to mentioned a guy in the group who always wore walker blood? I know that Rick’s group has done it & it wouldn’t be uncommon for others to as well, but I thought maybe it was a way of linking the two shows together in the future? That’s of course if the radio could transmit that far.
I’ve been watching both shows & finally binge-read all the comics these last few weeks.

I love The Walking Dead comics, and Issue 153 is no exception. Negan’s escape from the cell was a good cliffhanger from 152 and 153 brings intensity in Volume 26. Many people saw A New Beginning and a couple volumes after being full, but I never saw that. I like The Whisperers and a I feel they are a new take on the main antagonist category, and Negan is still there as a side antagonist. I like Brandon Rose (especially since we share the same first name). I hope The Walking Dead goes past 300 issues and stays as exciting as it always has been since Issue 1. Keep up the good work Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard, as well as the other inkers, shaders, letter writer, and all at Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment!

I didnt go to the next page to see the rest of the comments on here. But everyone on the first page is saying Negan is going to help Alpha take Rick out. Remember that issue where Rick went to Negan for help and had a chat. I think this is reflecting either them working together eventually or even better, work together to take out Alpha but then decides to kill Rick on his own. I strongly believe Negan could do this.

Really solid issue! Loved Magna and her group, been looking forward to seeing her in action. And what will Negan do the whisperer’s territory? Kill Alpha? Reason with her? I don’t think it’s that obvious. He is going to do something else. My theory is that he will end up killed or I’m betting that he will be captured, just like Rick has Lydia. It’ll be a game of chess between two masterminds, in which the two of them have spies on each other’s group. I don’t think Rick is as attached to Negan as Alpha is to Lydia, but imagine the panic that having Negan show up with Alpha’s group and a bunch of walkers around! That would be some BAD propaganda to the Alexandrians. If some people getting killed hurt Rick badly, imagine the guy who was locked in a cell and is one of the toughests of all getting killed. Rick is smart enough to know that. But one thing is for sure, things are not going to end well…

Well, hell. An outstanding issue! Propaganda creating paranoia, Michonne and Aaron following the trail into the Whisperers’ territory, and Dwight using Lucille. Magna is a real survivor, I hope she is going to become one of the most important Alexandrians. She can really see that Alexandria is worth fighting for.
And now to Negan – he’s back. That little bitch Brandon definitely got what he deserved, once Negan gave him a hug of death, the outcome was pretty obvious. I wonder where he found Negan’s old clothing, but alright, Negan is Negan. I really hope he doesn’t kill Alpha, rather manipulate her. Still, as someone written already, I hope he’s gonna get his head destroyed by Dwight and Lucille. No more cells this time!

Great issue! So much to think about.
Eugene you dolt! Why did you leave the radio on??
Don’t underestimate Alpha and her ability to become as bad ass as Negan. She is not going to let him walk on up to her and become besties. She has no reason to trust or accept anything he has to say. I am thinking Negan knows that and will probably stake things out for awhile. It would be nice to get more insight into the Whisperers and how they evolved.
Just wait until Maggie hears that Negan is out, she will go ballistic! Remember she beat the crap out of Rick before, this is NOT going to sit well with her. It could be a dividing point between communities.
I am not so sure Magna (who is awesome) has swayed her little party into her way of thinking. Dude and Dude passed a suspicious look behind her back.

Negan’s cruelty is starting to translate into common sense.

I’ve always been on TEAM RICK. He represents our immersion into this world. It was with him that we have gotten to this point. He is THE survivor….he is the good guy. However, he is still not confident in himself, and decisions are still backfiring on him. I feel bad for him, because he genuinely cares about other people and the community as a whole. Negan, on the other hand, couldn’t give less of a shit about others. However, Negan has always stuck to his guns (or his bats…or his knives) in how he deals with the world…..and more and more, his way makes sense. Why be nice to someone, only for them to turn on you and stab you in the back later? Why keep this confused, helpless kid along for the ride when all he offers you is danger? I’m always hoping Rick comes out on top…but I think he may now be chasing an unrealistic dream. Negan’s way, for me, seems the better option to survive in the now of the Walking Dead.

Negan has already made his first move in his plan. He’s left that dumb, dead kid at the border. Rick’s group will find the kid and think he was killed by the Whisperers. Then, they’ll be propelled to respond. Negan is going to be doing little things behind the scenes to instigate war between the two groups….then he’ll find a good seat and enjoy the show….wearing a smile.

I actually disagree on them blaming Brandon’s death on the Whisperers. They have to know Negan needed help. I think when they find Brandon so far out of the community they’ll know exactly what happened.

I like Rick less and less as time goes on in the comics. Negan has an odd charisma that you can’t help but enjoy. love that he gets his jacket back and agree with the commentary at the back…. Dude is wicked with a knife. The bat has flare but if he gets close to ya expect it to be your last hug. Soooooo excited to see how he handles the Whisperers. And Brandon you were a dumbass. Hurry up May more excited for next issue than the show!!

I re-read the entire series in preparation for this issue, and now I just don’t know what to do with myself. I forgot how it feels to wait in anticipation for a whole month!
Anyway, I’m super excited to see Negan meet the Whisperers. Judging by his and Alpha’s philosophies (especially considering Negan’s thoughts on sexual violence), there’s going to be a real clash of characters here. I’m thinking that Negan may eventually challenge Alpha, but at the same time, I don’t see Kirkman getting rid of her character so fast. Because he’d win, of course.
And I can’t even imagine what’s going to happen with Michonne and Aaron thrown into the mix. Alpha is not going to be happy… and I’m guessing blood will be shed in some fashion.
Last but not least, I have a hunch that whatever group Eugene is talking to will be playing some vital role in the coming conflict between the communities and the Whisperers (assuming they are located within a reasonable distance). For all we know, their community could pass for a city in these post-apocalyptic days. That would be an intriguing way to expand the universe, like how A Larger World did, and would place Rick’s role as a leader into perspective.
Who knows, maybe Alexandria (and possibly other communities) will actually fall. I mean, let’s be real; Alpha’s Horde in issues 143 & 144 is just a giant version of Chekhov’s gun, waiting to go off. They’re fucked!
Regardless of what happens, I don’t think the communities will get out of this one unscathed…

I think it’s pointing to the character who shot Marco – I don’t think they mention his name. When he tries to excuse his actions to Rick, he says he just was scared about how Alpha snuck into Alexandria, and killed so many of their people… mentioning Rosita first. On the next page, there’s a close-up of Rick appearing speechless, as if he has a sudden epiphany, or if there’s something distracting on his mind.
I suppose there isn’t any concrete evidence, but I’m willing to bet this is the father. I’m curious about the role this character will play in the coming issues…

Okay so i signed up just to comment on this issue.

First and foremost, I LOVED the artwork, as usual. But i love even more that Negan is out and hes BACK in action. Chains cannot bound a beast like him for very long.
Secondly, im more distraught that i have to wait a month for another issue than i am about youknowwho catches Negans knife at the end.
Thirdly, I LOVE Kirkmans work, and the depth of thought he puts behind it all.
Cannot wait till next month….NEED MORE NEGAN MEOW

The story progression is now heavily leaning towards Negan reporting to the whisperers about Rick’s plan. But the possibility still remains that he will not decide to go through with that after all. Alternatively Negan may still find some sly and cunning way to confront Rick and attempt to gain his trust again in a Negan style power play that incorporates elements of mind fuckery that we have come to enjoy from TWD’s favorite psychopathic man child. To that end, Negan is aware of the entire situation with the Whisperers and it doesn’t seem likely that he would walk into their camp and try to tattle on Rick. He even calls it “ratting” on them when he is speaking to Brandon in this issue and we can clearly see Negan’s attitude towards people who try to cowardly take control. I don’t believe Negan wants to see the communities collapse. If anything he’d want to be in charge again. So I believe that he will do something that is as clever as it is unexpected and make a play at Rick that is not as cut and dry as just sicking the whisperers on him or running away. Kirkmans writing often forces us to assume one thing may happen, and then he spits in the face of our expectations by moving the plot to an exciting new place.

Holy fuckedy fuck, so glad that Negans free, with his jacket and knife belt. Hopefully he gets reunited with his boo Lucille so that he can rub his dick against her once more. Negan and Lucille have a better love story than Twilight :P. I loved when he stabbed that dweeb that helped him escape. Taught that idiot a lesson he’ll never remember cause he’s dead. The lesson is, you don’t help a maniacal malevolent malice-fueled motherfucker and expect to live afterwards.

The heavy hangs the head cover is a representation of Rick’s leadership. The blood is metaphorical and relates to the inflictions of Marco and Brandon. People are confused about what to do, so Rick tries to feed them Negan’s concept of false security by creating his own militia. As we can see, this has seemed to backfire thus far and Rick sees this failure after confronting Paul. I really think the panels with Lucille are foreshadowing a Negan reunion and Dwight’s is gonna be on the receiving end of that blow. I really don’t think Negan wants to kill Rick, and I think he has this Joker dynamic too him and finds it too much fun to manipulate and torture Rick. On a side not, I read Negan’s lines in Jeffery Dean Morgan’s voice which was f*cking awesome!!!

I Love This Series And Enjoy Predicting How It Will End (Though It Should Never Happen!!!!)

My Favorite Is Looking At The Aspect Of The Walkers Dying Before Rick And Carl

If We Base It On Facts, The Walker’s Should Be Close To Dying Due To Decay And Starvation. They Said It In The Beginning Of The Series That They Do Starve, It’s Just Slower Than Humans. So, A Lot Of Walkers Are Gone That Way. BUT They Also Are At A Stage In The Decay Where Their Organs Are Liquefying And That Means That They Are Close To Just Being A Hump Of Bones. Let’s Pray Rick And Carl Can Outlast The Walkers And That This Series Lasts Til The Next Apocalypse.

Great issue! I’m so excited about Negan being free and the upcoming whisper war. One thing I have to say is about when Negan and Brandon hugged. Brandon was talking about how the whispers and Rick killed his parents and I started to understand why he did what he did and I honestly started to feel kinda bad for him, then Negan hugged him and I thought to myself “Even after all the shit Negan has done maybe he’s changing and some of his humanity is starting to return to him.” Then I turned the page…

Rick never wanted to go after the whisperers but then he listened to the “Devil on his shoulder”. This issue showed the way his propaganda campaign (carried out after listening to Negan’s advice) is backfiring in a multitude of ways. Rick being a flip-flop leader is leading everyone to attacking each other and him. Manga’s Crew is breaking apart with “Who’s side are we on anyway”. People are scared shitless with hair-trigger reactions popping off in broad daylight from the sight of a friendly they don’t know. This is evident to Rick in his expressive reaction about the signs. Even Eugene is hiding things (mentioned in one of my posts earlier) despite the fact that he is supposedly getting his way in these retaliation efforts. All Negan really has to do is stand back. What that standing back looks like I don’t know, but his pegs seem to already be put in place. He wouldn’t be free if Rick’s people weren’t bloodthirsty. Manipulated with a fear campaign, their taste for blood is wetted. They will ultimately follow Negan’s trail to the Whisperers whether he goes there or not. They will see what they want to see in a state of fear and uncap a bottle they are ultimately unprepared to drink. I really tried to see which way he was headed in the very last panel but for all I can tell he’s walking along the boundary line. Maybe he takes a squat in the woods and heads a different way? No tellin’. But he ultimately says “That was YOUR plan”. The plan about the two groups killing each other off. So, in conclusion, I don’t have any idea, neither does anyone, but I will be back to see what happens for sure. So good.

And to all the butthurt people in the world…

Walk On! ok Rick realizes that his campaign has everyone freakin’ so he employs Eugene to silkscreen t-shirts for all the Alexandrians that say on the back “Keep Calm And Walk On”. They all buy it up and then Negan gets wind of this and despite his plans to still win Rick over by slaying the Whisperers decides to unleash the zombie horde onto Alexandrea. He rigs a PA in the style of a Mad Max drummer/badass guitarist procession to lead the herd over to Alexandria (by playing _____ I don’t know acdc or something that sounds like “rock on” or something fitting…use your imagination) and stampedes over the group. End of book. Then at the last panel he says “Keep calm and Fucking walk on”. He says it very calmly.

The first thought that came in my head was that Negan goes pretty much yolo inside the Whisperers’ lands, possessing only a knife and a leather jacket – which made me think – he really needs a way better advantage than that to gain anyhting from the Whisperers, assuming he wants RIck dead or just to take leadership of a new group. Soooo, I thought that Alpha might be his wife 😀 and what would be fucked up in a TWD right kind of way would be that Carl fucked his daughter. I also found it a coincidence that if this would be true, the Negan backstory is coming out at the same time, because it becomes more personal.

What I think is going to happen is that Negan is actually going to go to Alpha and try to take her down somehow for Rick’s sake, whether that is from the inside or not is yet to be seen. I think he sees how Ricks way works but is just the guy to get his hands dirty.

Negan has been a driving force ever since he was introduced. I see people posting about how he’s going to “lead the whisperers” or “marry alpha” but I just can’t see that happening. He’s got a plan of his own and that’s why he killed off Brandon.

Brandon wanted to bring hell upon alexandria, and Negan didn’t want that. Of course he could have killed him for no reason, but I think Negan wants to prove himself to Rick once again, that he can be trusted. (Remember Negan could have escaped but he didn’t??)

I think he’s going to kill alpha (he might even be doing so on the cover of 156) and come back to alexandria to show Rick just how easy it was to eliminate them. Or to even show the people of alexandria that he too is a great leader. The way the comics have been moving along it looks like Negan is trying to win rick’s trust.

    But that’s just my opinion.

but anger makes you blind, so I can’t say I wouldn’t do something stupid like letting Negan out of his cell if I was THAT angry.
but overall, great issue! especially with Negan’s final words before the credits.
