Robert Kirkman on Killing Off Characters

Entertainment Weekly had a brief chat with Robert Kirkman at Comic-Con, and they asked him about how tough it is to say goodbye to someone when they are killed off the show.

“It’s kinda worse than that,” said Kirkman. “Because I got a pretty good idea when all of them are dying. To a certain extent, if we follow the comic, like possibly even more than Scott [Gimple] knows.”

Robert Kirkman then began pointing at people around the room. “So I’m always like…two years, three years, six months, two weeks, oh, God this is awful! It’s really rough. Doing the comic, it was fine because it was just lines on a paper. Whatever. We’re killing that guy. Cool. But the show, it sucks because we all work together, we hang out, and have a great time. But, you know, the story’s gotta get done and people gots to die, as I like to say. It’s pretty rough.”

Even worse, it’s essential to keep the soon-to-be-dead castmembers out of the loop, especially given that plotlines can change. “You can’t tell ’em because we change our minds all the time. And that’s the other really bad thing about it. We can’t really give them that much warning because there’s always a chance that we’ll get into actually writing the scripts after we plan things out and we’re like, ‘Nope, that character’s living.’ Which has happened many times. So we don’t want to have many false news giving situations.”

So, given what Kirkman said above, who do you think is going to die when? What are your predictions for Season 5? If Kirkman pointed his finger at you, how long do you think he’d say you have to live!?

I wouldn’t worry too much…Season 5 is starting soon and the show has had a really hard time killing off characters from Rick’s group. At least when compared to the comic…The prison battle was *supposed* to kill off about half of the cast and almost everyone from Rick’s group ended up surviving.

    • Tom Whaley August 1, 2014 at 12:53 pm - Reply

Agreed. They need to take some notes from “Game of Thrones” or… uh… the comics! At no point was Rick’s group as stacked as it is now… Tyreese. Abraham. Daryl (I know he’s show only). The great thing about the comics is that his group is ever changing, and different line-ups have different strengths and weaknesses. There is dynamic. We don’t really get any of that in the show, because everybody kind of sticks around all the time…

      • Tammy August 2, 2014 at 2:32 am - Reply

But thats the beauty of it. It is somewhat altered from the comic books as Kirk mentioned that if it were to be an exact replica, people would know what to expect and it would have less appeal. 🙂 I’m diehard and I love what he’s done with it.

Well actually we do! Do you not understand how bad ass and epic the line up is right now!? We have number one fan fave Rick, then there’s fan fave tyreese Daryl Abraham Glenn Jesus Morgan and Ezekiel eventually all of these people have been ricks right hand man at some point and really great loyal people to rick and each other. The show in that aspect is better not all around because I’m a WD comic fan before show fan through and through and realize there have been injustices done to this fan base but at the same time something’s have been enhanced. For example Carols character. As for injustice, Andreas character and the governor story arc which was very slow, not as interesting, not as brutal or scary and not as eventful. Too Far Gone was the best part of the entire governor/prison story arc. But I love that Gimple is a genuine fan of the comics and respects us as comics fans and will do justice to this story and it’s characters or at least I hope so. So far he has, he done more comic material than any other show runner so far so as long as he keeps up the good work I think he should remain show runner for the remainder of this show and it’s entirety.

        • Tom Whaley August 4, 2014 at 3:20 pm - Reply

I think Gimple did a great job with Season 4, and his respect for the comics definitely shows. He couldn’t clean up all of Season 3, but I think the series is heading into an exciting direction. It’s a shame Gimple couldn’t have ran the show during the full prison arc, because Mazzara really ran that (AND Andrea!) straight into the ground. But yeah, overall, I really like what Gimple is doing. For once, I feel confident in the quality of the show, even if Rick’s group is way too stacked haha

          • Ishmael Murray August 4, 2014 at 9:16 pm

I agree 100% mazzara was an ass clown who eats swamp ass. Lmfao. But I love gimple and how respects and will do justice to the comics, the fans, and the characters. I gotta say i cherish how stacked the group is I mean really pay attention to the dynamic. We have the amazing additions of Sasha and Tara, and on top of that we get tyrese to be with and interact with freaking Abraham!!!!! I mean come on Rick Daryl Tyreese Abraham Jesus Ezekiel Glenn and Bob!? What kind of monster team is that, that’s insane and we are so lucky to get that that’s almost the only aspect I think is better than the comic is that we get to see that. Like I’ve said I prefer the comic to the show, I adore the comic lol but carol on the show is better than carol in the comic. The biggest mistake of this show was killing andrea when they did and how her character was portrayed, I could live with the death of dale and sohoia and andrea and dale being together, although I would’ve loved to see that (I’m a Twd comic fanboy) lol but I could’ve loved with out it as long as andrea become like her comic counter part and ended up with rick in the end. But so far I like the direction the show is going and if Gimple does an amazing job like last season then I hope he stays show runner for the rest of the show!

I think Daryl will go at the hands of He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named (should he be introduced this season). Kirkman is famed for killing of fan favorites, so eliminating Daryl would be a HUGE upset… and many comic lovers (myself excluded) would finally have their vendetta against over-the-top Reedus satiated.

And perhaps Glenn. His character has become so one-dimensional sense season 3.

    • Drew Bentley August 1, 2014 at 11:47 am - Reply

They should just wait and kill Glenn off like in the comic, Negan bashing his head in. 🙂

    • Tom Whaley August 1, 2014 at 12:55 pm - Reply

I was hoping that Daryl would’ve gone last season during the finale, when his new group clashed with Rick’s. Would’ve been a great end. Fighting for his friends. Maybe it would’ve been corny… Idk. I kinda want to see him gone too, mainly to stir the pot.

    • Ishmael Murray August 3, 2014 at 3:11 pm - Reply

There will absolutely NO Negan in season 5, that’d be way too much source material to rush and skip through.I like a lot of this but some I have to disagree. Maggie will survive till the end she becomes the leader of the hilltop. Holly and dr.cloyd and especially Heath will be introduced in the show i dont think they’ll leave them out and give they’re entire stories to other characters or at least I hope not is be extremely upset and disappointed. Then as for season 6 being all out war and all the stuff before it, nah that’s way too much source material to rush through it wouldn’t be good for the story or the show. Rushing through things just because fans want to see something doesn’t make sense. I say season 5 finale is the herd like you said then season 6 pick up with the after math or during the resolvement of the herd situation where someone like Morgan if he’s there which he should be if he’s ever gonna come back to the show or tyreese. Then after S6 premier the first half is the “A Larger world” arc (the intro of the hilltop) nd then second half of season 6 is “Something to fear” the intro of the saviors, then the finale is issue 100 where Negan is introduced and a major character is killed. Then season 7 picks back up with the group going to the hilltop to bring whoever a body there to Burris them like issue 101 then season 7 is issues 101-114 with the season finale being rick declaring war on negan basically issue 115. Then season 8 is all out war and season 9 is “A New Beginning” and maybe they can include what happens during the 2 year time skip into one season so season 9 is what happens immediately after all out war and season 10 is a new beginning because all this would help the longevity of this show which is what they want and what us fans want. But knowing them they do time skips so they might follow the comics exact and have season 9 be “A New Beginning” like I said.

      • bloopdebloop August 7, 2014 at 10:12 pm - Reply

I think they’ll have to either rush through certain story arcs or do more time skips, or else in Season 10, 12 year old Carl will be played by a 20 year old Chandler Riggs.

        • Ishmael Murray August 8, 2014 at 10:16 am - Reply

Nope, they said they won’t rush through anything. On the show they’re playing carl as the same age as chandler, who is 15, with that being said during all out war carl will be 16-17 the show isn’t going to play carl as a little boy. That’s another departure from the comics. And I used to think if hate it if they did that but eh, not really is like to see carl actually be able to have phsysical scuffles with negan and/or talk back to him much more than he does in the comics. And with carl being 16 or 17 during all out war that can be possible, because an 8 year old isn’t going to punch negan in the face and hurt him. But carl being older during the times we know he’s supposed to be younger wi bring a great different point of view and outcome(s) that we haven’t seen.

Vendetta against Daryl? Why oh why? He is original to the tv show and one bad ass with a heart of gold. As a reader of the comics his character keeps me guessing. And Glenn “one d”? Really, cause I felt like the episodes where he is searching for Maggie were great! He totally owed that riot gear!

    • Bastet August 8, 2014 at 12:05 pm - Reply

I like Children of the Corn. They would be apocalypse survivors for sure!

  5. Andrew August 1, 2014 at 11:47 am - Reply

Oh, I would die immediately. No doubt about that at all. I’d be utterly useless.

Okay, well, I thought Beth was gonna die in Season 2. Then, I thought she was gonna die in Season 3. After that, Season 4. Now going into Season 5, I don’t wanna count her out. I don’t know who will or won’t make it out of Season 5 for sure but I do have an idea — I think — of when some people will die.

Rick? Eventually. Like, final season. Final episode? Episode before the final episode? Mid-season finale of the final season? Something like that. Carl? Nope. Carl’s gonna be the last man standing out of everyone in the group. I don’t see The Walking Dead as Rick’s story, I see it as Carl’s because I think eventually, Rick will die and Carl’s gonna have what it takes to survive in the world when that happens because he’s grown up in it. Sorry Daryl.

Speaking of Daryl, I think he’ll be the one to be on the receiving end of Lucille. Not Glenn. When it comes to major deaths, The Walking Dead has a tendency to change it up in the show. As we all know, Tyreese was killed by Governor in the comic the same way Hershel was in the show but Tyreese was still new to the show at that point so I knew he wouldn’t be the one to die. Glenn’s death in the comic was such a big deal because everyone loved him. He was such a big, important, likeable character and he was about to make some major decisions regarding him, Maggie and Sophia. Everyone thinks that when Negan shows up in the show, he’s gonna kill Glenn because “that’s how Glenn dies in the comic” which is just too predictable for the show to do. The writers are smarter than that. Glenn isn’t dying by Negan. I think Daryl is. Kirkman said before that a character’s death has to echo their journey and their impact on the show and Daryl definitely has the biggest one. If you’re an important character, you have to have an important death, right? I just think Daryl fits the mold for that. It’d be.. huge.. and people would get so mad and they’d flip out, they’d “riot” and Norman would burn his trailer to the ground — it’d be awesome.

So, I don’t know for sure.. I just think that’s when Daryl’s gonna die. It makes the most sense to me.

  7. Cassi August 1, 2014 at 12:05 pm - Reply

I used to think Lucille would take out Daryl too but now that it seems to be everyone’s pet theory I’m changing my mind on that. If it’s predictable they won’t do it. Kirkman has made sure of that.

probably gonna kill off some of the lesser characters at first, like sasha or bob or that new girl, the lesbian. And, although I agree that glenn will die, I don’t see them getting to Alexandria in season five (maybe and the very end) . The tv show seems to take longer to catch up to the comics. Morgan will be brought back in (scott gimple said as much) and will eventually die. Michonne and he might hook-up, crashing my dreams of a rick and michonne romance, then michonne will cut his arm off and he will die from it. Abraham might not end up dying in season six, because I think that Eugene from the tv show isn’t lying about being a government scientist, and in the show I don’t think Abraham and Rosita are a couple. Tyrese will die in glenns place at the beginning of season six. Carol will be the tv show’s crack-shot sniper, and they will meet the preacher this season sometime and in the season finale, they will meet aaron.

    • Tom Whaley August 1, 2014 at 12:57 pm - Reply

I think that they’ll make it to DC at the end of this season, and that season 6 will be the Alexandria stuff. Towards the end of season 6, Negan might be introduced… with Abraham dying in the penultimate episode, and Glenn going in the finale. The hoard fight would be a great mid-season finale.

Kirkman, let me help run the show!!! haha

      • bloopdebloop August 7, 2014 at 10:41 pm - Reply

I think they’ll get to Alexandria at the end of episode 8 this season, but we haven’t heard anything about Eric or Aaron being cast yet, so who knows. Season 5 will end with Carl getting shot in the face. Rick’s speech at the end of the No Way Out arc in issue 84 just seems like the perfect way to end the season.

    • Jordan L. August 1, 2014 at 2:29 pm - Reply

Seriously, I really do hope they make Carol the amazing sniper of the group! Andrea takes that place in the comics and she is still one of my personal favorites. The TV show needs a new Andrea, in that sense, and I think Carol is perfect for it. She’s already proven that’s she a tough cookie and can do what needs to be done. She is now one of the best characters (and actresses!) on the show.

    • Cheryl Anne August 2, 2014 at 11:40 am - Reply

They have only filmed up until episode 6. They were filming episode 7 after SDCC. The trailer is only for the first half of the season. They will show another trailer for the second half of the season during the break.

With that said, Father Gabriel is seen in the trailer (very briefly) so has his church.

I hope they get someone new to take the place of Andrea. A new character that is. Yes, Carol has been amazing but she’s not the sharpshooter as Andrea was. They still need someone like that.

When they do bring in Morgan, I don’t think he’ll hook up with Michonne. She didn’t hook up with Tyreese as it was in the comic book.

Eugene looks kind of guilty in that one frame in the trailer. But I think he has hope that DC has answers as is still up and running or at least part of it.

      • bloopdebloop August 7, 2014 at 10:44 pm - Reply

During the SDCC panel it was revealed there is a bit of episode 15 in the trailer, so maybe they shot certain scenes from later in the season just for the trailer. Also, I think Rick will be hooking up with Michonne in the series instead of Andrea. They seemed to be getting close in the 2nd half of Season 4.

        • Cheryl Anne August 8, 2014 at 11:25 am - Reply

Is that in the YouTube portion of the SDCC panel or is that something they left out. Were you there at the panel? Just curious. And I just want proof it was said.

Also, yeah, it looks like they will hook up. I think it was Gale Anne Hurd (or Scott Gimple) who hinted at some romance this season other than Glenn and Maggie. They didn’t say who.

          • bloopdebloop August 8, 2014 at 11:48 am

No, I just watched it on Youtube. At one point Gale Anne Hurd mentions that there is a bit of episode 515 in the trailer. As far as new romance this season, could be Rick and Michonne like I said before, but could also just be Abraham and Rosita like in the comic.

  11. Ronan Barrett August 1, 2014 at 2:54 pm - Reply

I think that the first characters to die will be either bob or Carol. Bob is a fan-favourite (Just by looking at some comments on this website) and I could see him being tainted meat at terminus. He could trick the “termites” that his gun shot wound is actually a walker bite mark. Carol is very different to her comic book counterpart. In the comic she is a distressed and mentally unstable mother who can’t fend for herself. In the show it is the complete opposite. Carol is a strong, survivalist woman who is mentally scarred at her daughters death. It would be appropriate for Carol to die in some kind of battle at terminus which sees her save Judith or even Tyreese because she both Cares and loves them.

In the end, the final decision of who lives and who dies is up to the shows directors, writers, and producers. I don’t really care who dies next, the only thing that matters to me is to get that feeling of no one is safe that is so great and well done in the comics and make the shows audience feel that way throughout the show.

if you watch the Season 5 trailer, Rick and Bob are next to each other with Gareth in front of them… and Bob’s head is down limp and Gareth has a smile across his face…

      I’m thinking Bob’s out.

      • Ronan Barrett August 1, 2014 at 4:11 pm - Reply

Yeah I saw that too. I hope Bob makes it at least out of terminus. It would stink if they killed him off near the beginning of season 5. Who do you think will die this season? (Besides Bob).

What!? Abe was practically just introduced lol you must not be a fan of or read the comics.

          • austin August 3, 2014 at 10:57 pm
          • Ishmael Murray August 4, 2014 at 11:42 am

Yes he did but not 30 issues before we were at now in the show. Were at ‘fear the hunters’ arc right now Abe doesn’t die until issue 98 so he for sure won’t be dying in season 5 neither will rosita or Eugene. Abraham may not even die at all, Kirkman originally had “a lot” planned for Abraham which he has said him self and when Abraham was introduced on the show he shared his excitement and how this is his second chance to write for him again so I believe that Kirkman will do what he originally planned for Abraham on the show meaning Abe will live past is comic death and someone else will get it or they’ll cut it out all together.

          • bloopdebloop August 9, 2014 at 2:28 pm

Everyone seems to think Glenn will die this season, but Abe dies before Glenn in the comic. I think both of them will make it through Season 5. Of course, since they’re not completely following the comic, things can change

          • Ishmael Murray August 9, 2014 at 4:14 pm

Kirkman is going to do what he originally planned for Abraham which means Abraham will live past all out war! As for Glenn, it’s possible that he’ll get the same death but if he does not, then he will live past all out war or will die during it like maybe he’ll take Eric’s death.

          • Ishmael Murray August 9, 2014 at 5:29 pm

If they don’t get their comic death, Abe and Glenn are both safe past all out war. Abe more than Glenn. Kirkman has stated that he originally had a lot planned for Abraham before he decided to kill him off last minute. So I believe Kirkman will do what he originally planned for Abe on the show which means Abe is as safe as michonne.

He’s not out! He’s in the battle scene with Rick. I think the battle scene happens after the trough scene (big metal trough in front of those guys). They are battling Termites with walkers all around (which I think are helping them take down Terminus). But I think as a result of something happening during that battle scene, Bob gets mortally injured/wounded. Maybe even possibly bit.

Out but not dead, he lives past terminus for sure. He was shown through out the trailer but everyone was filming at the hospital location yesterday where beth is except Bob abraham rosita, Eugene and beth. It was they were filming the mid season finale and they are today too

    • shante August 2, 2014 at 3:32 am - Reply

i agree, t dog died rescueing her, they thought Andrea was dead when she saved her on the farm. I think she will die trying to save someone

    • Ishmael Murray August 3, 2014 at 3:48 pm - Reply

I agree except carol does not die in the premier. Terminus will end by the second or even the first episode. Bob I agree will be the tainted meat scene, carol goes off with Daryl to Atlanta or on the show it might be called something else but they go off and fall off a bridge in a white van which I’m thinking will happen in the mid season finale. Now as for Bob being the tainted meat, you know the scene where they’re at the church and find dale outside then rick notices people are watching them and he says “on the count of three run for the church” and then yells “go!” Then shoots into the woods? I have evidence of this from the trailer: the second pic is when they kill the hunters. I think it’ll be Daryl and Carol instead of rick and Abraham. Then third pic is showing the similarities between chris and Gareth. And the last pic I circled Glenn and Maggie running for the church and rick yelling “go!” And shooting into the woods

Bob didn’t catch with me at all until the episode that started with his backstory in a flashback, and his subsequent romance with Sasha. The first half of S04 I didn’t care for him, but I don’t think we were meant to the way he was presented. Sometimes the most liked characters are first shown to be unlikeable potential @$$holes, and later on shown to be genuinely good guys (See: Daryl)

      • Ronan Barrett August 9, 2014 at 12:22 am - Reply

I agree with you 100%. Bob was an absolute scumbag. When I saw his flashback I saw him in a brand new light. The most unlikeable ‘goodguy’ for me was Merle. He came off as a rascist A hole and continued to be one until the heroic one man battle against the Governor and his men. That was the one moment that made me think Merle was a pretty cool guy. That and Guardians of the galaxy.

        • Mark Jackson August 9, 2014 at 12:35 am - Reply

Yeah for me Merle was likeable when he showed back up at the Prison with Daryl after the speech about how he couldn’t go back. Merle had that last scene on the bridge where he was desperately trying to be the bad guy he’d always been but he saw even his brother wouldn’t tolerate it anymore. That opened his eyes to the fact that if he kept it up, Daryl was gonna leave him and he would be totally alone.

          • Ronan Barrett August 9, 2014 at 12:55 am

When Merle did that speach in the prison I still couldn’t trust him. He was still that loser who who was one of the Governor’s right-hand men. I was very suspicious of him.

          • Mark Jackson August 9, 2014 at 1:41 am

Yeah, he even kept it up once he was accepted in the prison with the whole looking for dope in the mattresses thing, and telling his brother “Y’all people look at me like I’m the devil.” He really had a problem with being embraced in any way at all, kind of a macho man complex. But in the end, he proved his worth when he went on the suicide mission. And he knew that’s what it was when he let Michonne out of the car, too. That’s why he had some fun with a few drinks and the walkers at the window

          • Ronan Barrett August 9, 2014 at 3:06 am

On another note, the governor had this desire to have everything his way. He couldn’t live without having people to control. When Woodberry fell, he had nothing to control but himself. When he met that family he finally had people that he could control and manipulat. This lead to him finding that group. He killed Martinez because he felt that it had to be his way. The Governor couldn’t deal with living with Rick because it had to be his way. He had to have everyone and everything underneath his thumb.

      • Bastet August 9, 2014 at 10:28 am - Reply

I totally agree with you there but I may be one of the few that liked Daryl better when he had a chip on his shoulder.

I don’t know if Bob will be the tainted meat, but I think he might be killed at Terminus in the same way that Glenn was killed by Negan in the comic. The trailer makes it look like Glenn gets it with the baseball bat, but they would never give away something like that in the trailer. I think Gareth will reconsider killing Glenn, not wanting to be a racist by killing the Asian guy, and then do the eeny-meeny-miney-moe thing and end up killing Bob instead.

Here is my thoughts. Daryl will make it all the way to the end. Why? 2 people have told him that he will be the last man standing. So there is hope on that. Carl in the comics has already died so not sure where he will be in the end. I don’t want Carol to go but she will saving Judith or daryl or rick. Glenn will go this season along with bob. My guess. I don’t want to see any of them go at all. You get so attached to them. All I can really say is we won’t see it coming with any of them. Who would have thought hershel would have died.

I think we need a BIG death on the show to bring us back to anyone can go at any time. I would hate to lose anyone from the show

I think, in Season 5 only, that Bob, Glenn, Carol, and Tyreese will meet their end. I heard rumors of how Bob meets his end and part of it was possibly in the trailer. Not sure how the others will go but these are based off of the comic book alone. My other concern is for Tara and Sasha. Not being in the comic book really puts them in jeopardy. With that said, Daryl is safe this season. I only see his eminent death if another character comes along that pushes this series forward more so than he does. When that happens, Daryl will go out a martyr. I also have a slight concern for Judith. I think they only keep her in the series because she offers hope for the future.

If Kirkman pointed at me and said, “You’ve got X amount of time to live,” my X would equal a few years. I have some survival skills and usefulness about me. I’m always willing to help but I am not a leader. I may not be slim as everyone but I have a drive to survive and will push myself to my limits.

I agree with your whole post pretty much but I’m thinking Glenn will be around past this season.

Yeah, I hear ya but if they want to kill off Daryl, they may do as Glenn did in the comic with Daryl. But I think with that said and it being all over the forums, Glenn will go as he did inthe comic book. I’m on the fence about Glenn.

) Spoiler Alert ( I think it will be him or Daryl that goes out by Lucille . I think it will be season 6 or 7 before they introduce….. Wait how far you in the comic ?

The only reason I asked where you are in the comics is because I read a conversation with you and Bastet a while back that you were not finished . I don’t want to be the one to spoil things for you I’m trying to get better at that .

          • Cheryl Anne August 8, 2014 at 11:10 am

***SPOILER ALERT*** I just finished volume 12 but things have already been spoiled by my own curiousness. I kinda know how Glenn dies. I know about Lucille. I know how Abraham dies. Just haven’t read those parts. I know a bunch of people who die just not how. And I have read #128 and #129. Picked up #128 since I won the contest with my photo that is similar to the cover and I won #129.

          • Jason Thomas August 8, 2014 at 3:16 pm

Congrats on the win by the way if I had not said it yet . All I was going to say is they most likely won’t introduce Negan for a few more seasons. I think they will mention him in season seven .

          • Cheryl Anne August 8, 2014 at 8:56 pm

Wow, you think that far? I thought Season 6.

          • Jason Thomas August 9, 2014 at 5:09 am

I think the longer they wait the better just to keep viewers talking. I think it will make Negan’s appearance that much more exciting .

RK said this about comic characters and tv characters before though and ended up doing it later.. example Hershel was supposed to die in season 2 or 3 but scott wilson was so damn good they delayed his death, in teh comic Glenn was supposed to die around issue 72 or something but it was delayed till 100.

I think tyreece and carol go next nearer the mid or end of season. As for myself getting the Kirkman finger point… I would want to go out in a blaze of glory. Take one or maybe a small horde of walkers for baby Judith or Carl and Rick. In TWD universe Kirkman is god.

I don’t know where all this Norman Reedus hatred is coming from.Wasn’t there end of season 4. I Love the character of Daryl and hope he lives quite a while. NR hatred is really bothering me. I’m no fan girl, I respect him. He has worked hard his whole life with little recognition before TWD & is finally getting the respect he deserves, model, artist, actor. I don’t know why people suddenly want to pizz all over that. When RK was asked if he could have changed anything in the comic, he said he would have added Daryl. Hating someone for success only exposes your own failures in life.

    • Bastet August 8, 2014 at 10:08 am - Reply

For me, it’s nothing personal in regards to Norman Reedus (well, other than he let the fandom go to his head & whatever that is he’s supposed to be doing constantly with his tongue is sickening). I just want the feeling of “no one is safe” to return to the show. Out of all the characters on the show, I feel Daryl has immunity to a kill, simply because of what a hoard of hormones can do for viewer audience….because his character is reeeeaaally not all that much cooler than any of the others. In fact, his character has gotten weaker, IMO.

      • Kelly Hall Green August 11, 2014 at 11:01 am - Reply

Please see my above response to Cassi, as I don’t feel like typing all that again. I explained his fandom through scientific research. Daryl has no immunity and could be killed off at any time. That is a VERY good reason to stick his face out there while he can to ensure future jobs. I like seeing Daryls tongue as he “mock-licks” his cast mates. I think it’s funny, and so do they, so you shouldn’t let it bother you so much. I might suggest you not look at those pictures if it upsets you…speaking of a sickening tongue,,, did you see Miley Cyrus’s tongue on MTV. Talk about sickening!!! She looked like she had gargled 4 gallons of Jizzzz, and drank a gallon of milk before coming on stage with that nasty bright WHITE tongue. My daughter said “Ew, look at her rubbing up against him and showing her vag to the audience!” I was saying “Jezus Cripes! Look at her tongue, that’s disgusting, turn it off! Turn it off!!!” Personally, I would much rather have a girl flash their vag in my face then stick out a nasty white tongue at me anyday. At least a vag is pretty. I agree that his character was weaker last season (excepting the Beth/Daryl eps, where he actually showed that he does have weaknesses) but almost every character on the show has had weak moments, including “Farmer Rick” which was just awful, but he has been building up his strength again, as I’m sure the others will too, Iliked season 4 but nearly everyone came off as weak after being separated, with the exception of Carol who unfortunately had to do what needed to be done, and came to help even though she had been banished, “Look at the flowers Lizzie” 🙂 Heh…at least NR brushes his teeth. 😀

        • Bastet August 11, 2014 at 11:14 am - Reply

You see what you just did there? See your reaction to Miley? That’s how I feel about Norman Reedus! I can almost excuse Miley because she seemed to hit puberty & changed over night. Reedus can’t say that.
As for his pics, I’d have to shut out almost everything TWD to avoid him….not gonna happen!
I’m happy that TWD brought Reedus out into a much stronger light. I’m just tired of seeing him on & off the screen….listless Daryl, tongue, sunglasses, & all. That’s just me.

I don’t hate anyone in the cast! I wish they could all stay. But I agree with Bastet, we need that feeling that no one is safe and it seems everyone has been safe for a long time now. Kudos to Mr. Reedus for his success. Kudos to all the cast members who are now recognized for their work on The Walking Dead.

Thank You! I think you are the only person here who actually understood what I wrote.( I got a lot of vile e-mails with some very disturbing remarks over that post) They will all die eventually and they will continue to kill off our favorites, but to attack someone for being successful because they spent 20 yrs working at it, is deplorable. In my above post, you can see how I separated the character of Daryl on the show from the real life person of Norman Reedus. You seem to be the only person on the thread that caught that. Good eye, and thanks again. 🙂

        • Bastet August 11, 2014 at 11:07 am - Reply

          4 things:
          1) If you don’t want anyone to make false assumptions, you shouldn’t post a comment about comments from another place without specifying that they are from another place. You won’t find much of what you were referencing here on this site….I’m probably the biggest Daryl/Reedus “hater” here & even I didn’t take it to the level you’re talking about.

          2) Norman Reedus wouldn’t be a but a blip on the hollywood map if it wasn’t for TWD. Daryl used to be cool as hell, but not anymore. Lots of us think that Daryl is still around because of Norman Reedus’s fan base. Fans of The Walking Dead–not Norman Reedus fans–understand this and therefore, are able to merge the two. Truthfully, the disappointment is with the production crew.

          3) I, personally, am annoyed with both Daryl & Norman Reedus & have given my reasons why, but my main reason is that I feel TWD show has lost a little bit of its luster & it is because Reedus damn near carries the show. I mean, look at where he’s at in the S5 poster….Rick’s not even in the middle! Our (TWD die hard fans) frustration lies in the fact that it shouldn’t be this way! It shouldn’t feel like Reedus’s popularity–giving the show its #s–extends his character Daryl, who is no longer a strong character, IMO. What makes it worse is Reedus’s attitude off the screen; if you don’t see a swell head, you’re not paying attention. A person doesn’t have to be that way for any reason.

          4) I respect your opinion & I do understand what you were trying to say.

          • Cheryl Anne August 11, 2014 at 11:56 am

I write fan fiction. I find it easier to write about Rick because there is so much known about him. When I wrote my first fan fiction, I did a romance between an original character and Daryl. It was difficult to write because not much is known about Daryl. You have to realize they made up this character at the spur of the moment. He doesn’t have a solid back story like everyone else. They are making it up as they go. I think that is hurting them as it pertains to the character Daryl Dixon. That is why he is a weak character.

I agree that his character only stays because of the fan base. I also agree that it is because Norman Reedus is single and Daryl Dixon is single. These woman have false hopes of scoring with him. In the show, they see this shy yet seems badass. It’s the whole bad boy image they are attracted to. As for Norman, they say how nice he is and everything but he does that because they are paying him to sign autographs and take pictures with him (at comic cons at least). He has to be nice or he won’t be asked back. He won’t make his money.

On the other hand, I absolutely love Andy because he isn’t in the lime light. Not because of Norman (well, maybe a bit) but mostly he doesn’t put himself out there at all the comic cons. He spends time with his family. He does the important comic cons (SDCC, WSATL) for the show, not for himself. I respect that.

I’m also a big fan of Rick Grimes because he is essentially the main character. (I know others think that The Walking Dead is based on Carl Grimes experiences, and they could be right.) I like that he is complex. He can be edgy when he needs to be and peaceful the majority of the time. He has good intentions even when things go awry. I don’t see complexity in Daryl Dixon. I see a standoffish guy who does as he is told because that is all he has ever known. He can’t even get close to anyone because he has never done it before. I don’t even think he was that close to Merle. That’s my opinion of the character. Like I said, I don’t know his full back story, none of us do.

All in all, I have respect for all the actors on The Walking Dead. Like they keep saying, it is a chance of a life time. Who would have thought this show would take off? No one did. They honestly thought it would only last one season. Now, look at them going onto their 5th season and possibly many many more.

And that’s MY two cents. 😉

          • Bastet August 11, 2014 at 12:08 pm

One thing that makes Andy sexy off the screen is how he carries himself…what he does NOT do! I ain’t gotta be a single woman to see it but I think being a grown woman counts!
            Muahahahaa!!

          • Cheryl Anne August 11, 2014 at 12:15 pm

            Absolutely!!

And I think it is a bit creepy that all these younger girls like Norman. Um, do they realize he is 45 years old? He’s older than Andy!! LOL.

          • Bastet August 11, 2014 at 12:17 pm

C, I’m still lost on the Norm appeal. I guess I’m waaay Over the Hill!! 😛

          • Cheryl Anne August 11, 2014 at 12:21 pm

I don’t think women are infatuated with Norman. They are infatuated with Daryl. Daryl has this bad boy image that most women fall for. I’m not one of them. I like good guys, like Rick.

I’m 37. Andy is closer to my age anyway. 😉

          • Bastet August 11, 2014 at 12:28 pm

I like Bad Boy. Shane…..SHANE!! The Gov was yummy, too. Daryl = no…..hell no.

          • Cassi August 11, 2014 at 2:33 pm

The Governor?! Ugh girl that is where I draw the line on our agreement in men! Shane scared the piss out of me and lost me after that weird drunk half assault on Lori in the CDC but I can’t argue that he wasn’t attractive. LOL

          • Cassi August 11, 2014 at 2:35 pm

Oh and #TeamRick! I still think he comes across as the star of the show despite a lot of recent focus on Daryl. I see Rick as more of a big brother figure for Daryl (and hence still the LEADER)!

          • Cheryl Anne August 11, 2014 at 3:00 pm

I can’t say anything about age. I married some so much older than myself (26 years older). I can’t do Shane. I agree with Cassi that whole attempt assault on Lori. Ugh. And yes, I crushed on Sean Connery when I was younger (it’s the accent). And YES, David Morrissey (Governor)!! And of course Andy!! It only makes them more appealing with the accents. I have an English accent that brought a woman to tears reminder her of her homeland. I’ve wanted to try it out on Andy and see if he asks me where I’m from. 😉 Won’t he be surprised when I just blurt out “Maryland.” XD

YES! So weird. It’s like crushing on your dad. Of course I crushed on Sean Connery in my 20’s and even then he was old enough to be my grandpa. That’s worse lol.

          • Kelly Hall Green August 11, 2014 at 4:13 pm

Thanks 🙂 the reply started a little harsh but ended with you being very nice and polite. I appreciate that. We’ll just have to agree to disagree about NR, but if the show had not turned Rick into a wandering, hallucinating farmer, then the fans would have had more focus on him. Daryl is supposed to be a ‘sidekick’ for him. I believe that when the show picks back up ( as stated in the many interviews that I have watched) the focus will be back on Rick Grimes, and Daryl will become a sidekick again. We have already seen this start to happen as Rick took a bite out of a guys neck while Daryl was getting his butt kicked. I believe this was done purposely. Rick was made to look weak for a while, while Daryl stepped in and took some control so that when Rick turns more aggressive on the show it will add more shock value, just as the neck bite did. I currently cannot get the comics to read,(although I would love to) due to health and financial issues. I understand your dislike of the character of Daryl. Most people who have read the comics are upset (to my limited knowledge) that there even IS a Daryl, as he is not in the comic books/graphic novels.

“if you don’t see a swell head, your not paying attention.”

Yes, I do see a bit of a swollen head, but I also see something else. When he was on the panel at Comic Con he was playing with his phone, fiddling with his hands, messing with their host and the other cast members and…wiping his hands on his pants. I noticed these actions immediately because I have anxiety issues and severe PTSD. All of the actions I mentioned, especially the wiping of his hands on his pants were signs of nervousness and anxiety. I recognized this right away as I do the same things myself when I get nervous. I start trying to make jokes, and even though I don’t want to, I end up having the focus put on myself which makes the anxiety worse, so I start running around like a rabid monkey, fidget with my hands, having no idea what to do with them and then my anxiety goes very high and my hands start to sweat, and I *wipe them off on my jeans!* so I recognize that behaviour very well! Andrew Lincoln is his best friend and says that NR is actually a sweet guy who is very shy, and get embarrassed easily. Most stars snub their fans and brush them off like they may “get dirty” if one touches them. Norman on the other hand occasionally ambushes fans to take selfies with them. I also loved him in Boondock Saints, and part two. Loved, then hated him in Blade 2, and I liked the messengers Part 2 better than part one. He had done pretty well for himself before TWD, but that IS what rocketed him to the top. I am in total agreement with you there. Just sticking up for my opinion, not trying to knock yours at all, thats the kind of thing that started wars over religion. 😉

I’m not trying to change your opinion at all and respect our differences. Hell, my BF started dancing topless, doing drugs and eventually started hooking, but when she left me when I was in labor with my daughter (because she couldn’t stare at the tray of needles, going thru withdrawal, with drugs in her shoe) stole a needle off the tray, said she was sorry, and walked away…I still named my daughter after her as a surprise.

People like what they like, period. You can’t change them, you can accept them as they are, for who they are, or just walk away. There have been VERY few people that I have walked away from, so I thank you again for sharing your opinion with me, and not dumping on me for mine. Plus…that was a pretty cool reply. If you want to see something funny, here’s Andrew playing a prank on Norman, watch how beat red NR’s face gets when he watches the playback of himself screaming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bs8h-PM8-mQ

          • Bastet August 11, 2014 at 5:20 pm

I apologize if I came off harsh. It’s never my intention to be anything other than nice. What’s refreshing is that we can hold a nice conversation even with a difference of opinion…especially with a difference of opinion! After all, that’s what makes things interesting, right?

I’m not one of those readers who is upset that the show doesn’t run completely parallel with the comic. That’s kinda narrow to me, but to each their own. I love the differences! It gives me more than one way to indulge. And I, like you, will never try to change people’s opinions, but I do like to be vocal about them. I try to always put it out there that it’s just mine & not simply “right” or “wrong”. I don’t know where you’ve picked up those bad vibes that you mentioned, but if you hang around here long enough, you will see that there are a group of us who are like family (a handful hold a couple of heartstrings), most of us don’t come off so….obtuse, & we would certainly like for people like you to stick around, especially if you have a respect for difference in opinion, which seem to be a rarity!

As for Reedus & anxiety issues, I work with Mental Health, so I know exactly what you’re talking about & I appreciate your insight into that life (PTSD is NO JOKE!). I noticed more of what you’re describing when Reedus first showed up on the scene. You most certainly could be picking up on things that I have ignored since I’ve had a tendency to tune him out lately. Because of what you posted here, I won’t be so quick to shut him down for now. Speaking of his character, I posted this before, but just for your sake, I like Daryl better when he had a chip on his shoulder. To me, that was who he was from the jump & that was who he was meant to be. Characters can & do change, but to me, this change does not suit Daryl. I didn’t remember him from Blade, but when I flipped through the channels & caught him on Blade, I was like, “Oh look! That’s Daryl! Daryl was on Blade!” So he’ll always be Daryl to me, kinda like Hugh Jackman will always be Wolverine.

I really didn’t think about Rick being “weakened” for the sake of shining a little light on Daryl. That’s a good observation. But let me assure you, Rick will indeed be numero uno, back in that limelight reeeaal soon! I hope you’ll stick around to hit the episode discussions here.

I’ve seen this video a while back & had a good laugh. I appreciate your sharing it… maybe to lighten the mood… but you’re cool with me….had me at “Thanks”! 😉

Hmmm I think it’s a jump to say that people are hating him for his success or have their own failures, I mean we don’t really know each other THAT well. Most people here who have claimed a dislike of Daryl and/or Norman Reedus have done so for a couple of seasons. I personally like Daryl, his story line and what he adds to the show but I respect others opinions. Everyone has their favorites and not-so-favorites. Also didn’t really see any complaining about the show. What you may have mistaken for complaining was people guessing how things might go on the show, who might die and how, and how characters may or may not be introduced. Most of us on the board have read the comics AND watch the show so we like to compare notes and theories and how they differ. When someone on the board says “I bet Glenn dies this season and Daryl gets Lucilled by Negan” they are not complaining, just throwing out their theory. Anyway – just thought I’d throw my 2 cents in. You can take it or leave it.

      • Kelly Hall Green August 11, 2014 at 10:00 am - Reply

You are making false assumptions. The posts that I were referring too were not posts from here. The posts that I were reading were things like “Rick (Andrew Lincoln) is the star of the show and this little …… (Norman R) is stealing the show from him and he’s not even in the comic. He needs to be killed off so the show can focus on Rick,” and/or “Norman R takes too much credit for the show, his arrogance is sickening, They need to kill his character!!!” and /or “The article about ‘if Daryl dies we riot’ where Norman says he’d be handing out matches should force the producers to fire that ‘so and so’ immediately, what a piece of s**t.” and/or “Do you see how Norman acts? (behaves) when he’s around fans? He shouldn’t have all the fans! Andrew should have the fan following not NR because RICK is the star of the show, but NR has to stick his face in everything, Gawd I HATE him and his little fan girl clubs!!!!!” THESE are the comments I was referring to, and yes, everyone has the right to their opinion, and everyone has their favorite characters. Never complained about that or said it was wrong in any way. But where I began seeing these comments, they haven’t been there before and now there is a flood of them. I was just wondering where all the absolute hatred came from so suddenly. so I asked, and got some e-mails calling me vile names, telling me ‘where to go’ and ‘what to do to myself.” I watch a lot of news, documentaries, and scientific “shows” on TV. So here is some knowledge about how actors relationship statuses affect their careers and fan bases. When an actor/singer becomes famous while single, their fan base can be huge. Lets use Brittany Spears (sp?) as an example. Single, she had a huge following of men. When she got into a relationship, her male fans dropped off a bit. When she got married, her male fan base plummeted. Andrew Lincoln is married, therefore his fan base is much smaller than Norman Reedus who is single. This is due to simple human imagination. You have these many thousands of fan girls who have the ridiculous belief that they will meet NR, he will look into their eyes and realize that this is the girl he has been waiting his whole life for and they will magically fall in love. Like we have seen in the past w/fans breaking into peoples homes to wait for them, convinced that once the person walks in the door, they will immediately fall for them. This is how the human brain works, tho’ usually not so extreme, this explains the large groups of fan girls that follow NR around. I know that the characters die. I have seen many “BBQ B!tch carol, glenn needs to die, kill off maggie,” and other character posts along with the kill Daryl posts and these do not bother me. What bothers me is people saying he needs to be killed off simply because of his success alone. He has worked HARD at his career while being a single dad and deserves the success he has worked so many years to achieve. I don’t see how an actor can be put down for “spending too much time with fans”. If you had worked at a job for 20 yrs or so, doing the best you could and always seeing other promoted while you were left behind, and then one day you were suddenly noticed, patted on the back, promoted, and all of your good work was finally brought to light, you would be proud of yourself too, besides, he could be killed off at any point, I mean this IS TWD, so why not put his face out there as often as he can, to ensure that his name is well known, so that he can advance his career once his time on TWD is over? In closing, “That piece of S**T NR needs to die so the show can focus on Rick only!!” is a statement, not me mistaking a guess, and that’s my 2 cents. Have a pleasant day. 🙂

Oh ok, my mistake. I’d never heard anyone tear any of the characters down that much on this site so I was definitely confused. Not sure I ever would have guessed you were writing on this site about things said on a totally different site. That being said – I agree that if people on other sites have said the above things, without any sense or reasoning to their arguments, then said people are probably pretty ignorant or as you mentioned, jealous. You should stick to this site – we tend to have more compelling arguments for our opinions. Usually.

Reading the comments below, I saw mainly a lot of complaints about the way the show is going, and not following comics. There is quite a simple solution to this. You could turn off your TV. The show isn’t ever going to match the comics. People would read ahead and not watch, which is why the show follows it just enough to use the name, and to my knowledge Kirkman has the last say on the script, and I do believe he has also been enjoying his well deserved claim to fame.

I want Daryl to get it, and I really hope he does. Itd be just what they need to make everyone fear and hate Negan, but most importantly it’s have the same the same level of impact if not more than the comic. If they had Glenn get the same death on the show it wouldn’t have the same impact as it did because Daryl’s loss would be much more shocking and impact flu it’s biost everyone’s character development as well as being the reason for all out war. And personally I want to have Glenn as an addition in all out war fighting along side Jesus Ezekiel Aaron Eric and Heath! I want more time of Glenn and Heath. And a little side note I’m tired of all the shipping and fanboys/fan girls of Daryl and Norman. This isn’t a CW show or fandom so the death of both beth and Daryl would do us justice in that sense as well. The show isn’t about Daryl, he’s not the main focus and he’s not the best character. But I can’t wait until ‘a New Beginning’ on the show when rick shaves his head!

PLEASE dont bring politics into this. dont make Daryl gay. Just let it be a zombie show. Promise you will lose so many viewers if u do this.
