The Walking Dead Season 7 Episode 9: Recap & Discussion

Spoiler Alert

Rock In The Road

We resume at The Hilltop where Rick and the group try and fail to persuade Gregory to join them in a fight against Negan. Gregory orders them to leave, and on the way out they’re greeted by the Hilltop members who DO agree to join with them in the fight. As they all prepare their next moves, Jesus suggests they finally meet King Ezekiel.

Jesus escorts Rick and the others to The Kingdom, where they reunite with Morgan and are introduced to King Ezekiel. Rick proposes they, The Hilltop, and The Kingdom ally themselves together to end The Saviors’ tyranny. Ezekiel’s hesitant but Richard (who’s been secretly wanting this for a while) assures Ezekiel, “The time is now” to set things right. Zeke invites them to dinner and promises he’ll have an answer by the morning.

After contemplating their proposal, Ezekiel informs Rick and his group The Kingdom will NOT help them in their battle but will offer asylum to Daryl. As they leave Rick orders Daryl to stay so he can help convince Ezekiel to join the fight.

As Rick and the group clear a multi-car road block, they discover a dynamite-laden steel cable stretched across the road. Rosita begins disarming it when they hear Negan instruct his men over the radio to locate Daryl. Knowing the Saviors will be coming soon, the group disarms even faster as a walker herd is spotted in the distance. It’s a race against time as Rick orders them to continue while also moving the road-blocked cars back into place. Rick and Michonne drive the cable-attached cars parallel to each other, brutally slicing through dozens of walkers as they go. The cord snags and they’re forced to escape on foot. Miraculously, they make it to the SUV and drive away as the dynamite detonates the remaining walkers behind them.

Rick and the gang arrive back at Alexandria just in time for Simon and the Saviors to show up asking for Daryl. The Saviors turn over the town looking for him and discover a bare pantry (which Father Gabriel emptied earlier on). Simon and his men give up but warn Rick if Daryl shows up at any point in the future they’ll be sorry. After they leave the group surmises Father Gabriel pilfered their supplies and bailed. Rick refuses to believe it and later discovers a note that says, “Boat.” Later, Rick and the group head out to find Father Gabriel and become surrounded by a community of armed survivors. Rick sees something or someone among them and smiles.

What did YOU think of tonight’s explosive episode? Was that the best walker stunt yet? What did Rick see at the end?? Tell us in the comments!

Not a bad start to 7B. Slow in the beginning but it picked up. Thought Rick might blow his hand off. Still wondering where the Carol story is going… and still wondering why Morgan is a wuss. Wonder who the new people are… here’s to things picking up faster.

It was a hint about Rick’s hand. He is going to loose it, after Simon’s line I am sure on 100%.
Maybe even after the War. But I expect it to be in the finale of this season or close to it.

Morgan just REALLY believes all life is precious and would like to believe that there are alternatives to killing. BUT he did show us that he’s willing to kill to save a life when there’s no other option.
My theories: I think Benjamin is gonna get killed by the saviors and that event makes both Morgan and Ezekiel realize that attack is imminent and they need to join Rick’s army.
As for Carol, I think they’ll hold off telling her about Abe & Glenn for a bit longer. She showed a little interest in Benjamin & gave him survival tips, which shows she’s beginning to care about others again. Once he dies, that will spark something after which she’ll find out what happened and that will bring her into the fight with a vengeance! She may be their secret weapon.

    A really good start.

Not to say that I was excited that much while watching it, but I am very happy. Also I like the contrast between half-seasons that TWD always has: first part is just dark, terrorizing, painful (in a good way), sad, oppressed. While the second one is full of thrill of rebellion, positivism and the promise of a better future for our groups.

I also can’t but notice that the soundtrack is really wide right now. It has more epic tunes, more atmosphericall and unique to each community. Like Kingdom has sort of Medieval music, Hilltop is more of a country-based, Saviors have loud and dark tunes and Alexandria pretty much is in inspirational music.

I loved the second half of the show. As for the new group at the end, as far as I could tell, and I may be wrong about this, but they seemed to be all women. Does that mean they are the Oceansiders? If so, Rick won’t be smiling long, because the ladies wont be happy to see Tara! Or, here is a thought, maybe HEATH was in that group! Remember he disappeared into a crowd of walkers and that was the last we saw of him. Rick would be very happy to see him alive.
Slicing the walkers was way cool, and unexpected! Thanks for that guys!
While I agree the meeting with Gregory had to happen, I thought the dialog was ridiculous. Really bad puns, fell flat and seemed more apt for an episode of Gilligan’s Island or something. Maybe they wrote it that was so we will REALLY hate Gregory!
I thought Simon was going to get it, but was glad he was still alive for now. Probably not for long since he is Negan’s “right hand man”.

Is Rosita just going to be pissy and obnoxious for the rest of the season?

I was an avid hater of the first half of this season. It was too difficult watching my favorite characters be forced into roles which they would never truly accept. Heck, the whole posse had been on their knees about to have their heads bashed in before, and all Rick was thinking was “when am I going to get an opportunity to stab these fuckers in the neck.”

But this episode was total redemption. The diplomacy, the urgency of needing more power, the faux servitude back to Negan. This is the steam I was praying that “march to war” was going to have. The fucking posse is back!

    – We should all be lucky enough to have a friend like Morgan.
    – Carol just can’t help but be a leader, even when she’s actively trying not to be.
    – Someone needs to give Gregory a nuclear wedgie.
    – Jesus. Oh, Jesus.
    – Daryl looked like a puppy that just got kicked when a Rick left him at the Kingdom (Stay boy. Stay.)
    – There’s no way Father G has done them wrong. I just don’t believe it.

I absolutely believe Gabriel “could have” turned chicken again and went to the saviors w/goodies to plead a deal to join them. BUT I doubt it. Seems to me like he had an epiphany…. maybe a ploy to get into the saviors base so he can get to Negan from the inside?

I didn’t catch this but a friend of mine at work today told me there was a shadow that set up in the backseat of the car as Gabriel was driving off. Gonna have to rewatch but I suppose if that’s the case then he was being forced to do that stuff?

Father Gabriel heard whistling and he left his post to follow the whistling. The whistling came from boots. Boots from the last episode, episode:8 “Hearts still beating” Aaron and Rick took the food from the boat that belonged to “boots”, “boots is part of the group that Rick and co encounter at the end of the episode. Remember the note,”congrats on winning but you still lose” that’s the note. Yes boots popped up in the car as gabriel drove off

I’m feeling very uncomfortable with Morgan and Ricks relationship. I did love the intro to the gang and Kang Ezekial

I’ve not read all the posts but did anyone else see someone sit up in the back of Gabriel’s car, and as he pulled away from Alexandria?
