Interview with Alanna Masterson

Actress Alanna Masterson (Tara Chambler) talks to AMC about finding love in the apocalypse and new cast member initiation rituals. Here’s a brief snippet from her interview!

Q: What attracted you to Tara when you signed on to play her?

A: I didn’t know much about my character. I just knew that I had a family, and that I was a lesbian and that I was just like this badass chick, which is always great. They’re really secretive over here, which is great because it keeps you on your toes. But I liked that she was tough. I have four older brothers, so I grew up in a pretty tough household, and even though Tara’s not Daryl with a crossbow or Michonne with a sword, she’s still sort of a badass in her own right. Once she meets the Governor she’s just not phased by him.

Q: It’s true, she’s super vigilant at first. Are you that type of person at all?

A: Yeah, definitely. I have a hard exterior. But I’m also a complete baby. I cry in every movie. I cry in those Budweiser army commercials. Home improvement shows? I’m sobbing.

Q: Was the on-screen romance an aspect of the part you embraced?

A: It was awesome — they finally have a lesbian character on the show, I’m so excited! And then I got to meet my girlfriend and she was awesome. It’s the same as if they had given me a love interest that was a boy. I think watching the show, you need a little bit of romance, because you want something to fight for. You, the audience, root for the love of the two people, whether it’s Glenn and Maggie or whoever.

You can read the full interview over at AMC’s The Walking Dead Blog!

She likes the Beastie Boys…yep, she’s cool!! I hope they give her a longer run than Martinez!

i think carl should have a romance. honestly, i think that would be awesome. so here is what would be ideal for a carl romance:

A bada*s gf that has a soft side. the two would be really happy together, then carl would like..i dunno, propose to her..or give her a freaking promise ring! mmm that would be…..interesting….
anyway, i have a feeling glenn will die NOT due to comic book villain negan. so i think that carl’s (made up) girlfriend would be beaten to death by him. then carl would like put her in a decorated urn or something.

just an idea, kirkman…. oh yeah, and if I could possibly play that part…

thanks! usually people think ideas like that are stupid…theres a first..or possibly second…for everything!!! so do you know if kirkman ever sees these posts?

        • Bastet February 20, 2014 at 3:23 am - Reply

I see nothing stupid about your idea. A romantic relationship for Carl is certainly a possibility, as that would keep things realistic. When they feel it would fit, the writers will probably work it in. Better be ready to take that part (you know I’m pullin’ for ya!)!

As for Kirkman seeing these posts, I read somewhere that this site was his idea & I’m sure that, being who he is, he wants to know what we’re talking about & think. He probably doesn’t hang around here & hawk the site half as much as I do, but I’m sure he must check it out from time to time.

if kirkman does see it, i would sure as heck like him to respond!!! I have half a dozen ideas for the show, but i doubt they would let a kid tell them what to do. if they were open to thirteen year old writers- and definately actresses, they should let me know!!!

Hey Kirkman! kirkmaaannn kirkman! kirkmanywany…kirkbeduuman kirkman! (kirkamn) “WHAAAATTTT?”

            Hi.

          • Bastet February 20, 2014 at 7:08 am

You are so hilarious/cool!! If Kirkman doesn’t pick you up as a writer, you go out & do your own thing. Who knows…you could be the NEXT Kirkman! Start now while you’re young & you’ll be set for sure when you get Kirkman’s age!!

          • thewalkingdeadfanatic2 February 20, 2014 at 1:31 pm

I was thinking about either writing my own comics or tv series- but zombies are crazy hard to draw, so kudos to kirkman. A show would be cool, but I REALLY want chandler, if you can understand that I do not try to be creepy with that. It’s just that I think he’s great at looking good- er….. acting…..

Which would you rather see, New comics or a episode series?

          • Bastet February 20, 2014 at 1:50 pm

Kirman doesn’t draw the comics; he’s got someone else doing that. He does do some doodling & then tells Charlie Adlard what he wants.

Personally, I’ve only been a novel reader (btw, the Dead novels are great, too!). Reading material has always been the better medium for me, but we all know you can do both!

          • thewalkingdeadfanatic2 February 20, 2014 at 2:27 pm

Gurlllll I’m glad you said that! I am waaayyyy better at writing novels than comics!

I think she will sorta take the role of Andrea

    • Bastet February 20, 2014 at 3:16 am - Reply

If so, I hope it’s the Comics Andrea…not that I didn’t like Show Andrea, but if you read the comics, you’ll know what I mean!

      • thewalkingdeadfanatic2 February 20, 2014 at 7:00 am - Reply

honestly i wasnt all-too-fond of show andrea. she didnt quite seem right, and kind of annoyed me. while me companions were grieving the loss of her, i was just like “Dude, get to the next scene already!” I liked dale, cause he was so old-man-y, and that seemed like an innocence to the show- (because honestly, carl was truly never innocent!) I wasnt too fond of T-dog, definately not merle- though i dont think your supposed to like merle……..and i kinda liked lori. cant wait for new characters.

        • Bastet February 20, 2014 at 7:24 am - Reply

There were some annoying things about Show Andrea for me, too…NOTHING like Comics Andrea! When you start on those comics, you’ll remember what I’m saying!! I loved Dale!! He was my starting character fave & 1st tear jerking shock of a death! Comics Dale….meh. T-Dog was cool. I thought he did a great job acting. I didn’t like Merle for who he was, but I did enjoy watching him, if that makes sense…kinda like The Gov. Bad guys that you love to hate! Speaking of hate, I hated Lori, both Show & Comics! On TV, I could not WAIT to see a walker take Lori out!! I was disappointed how it went down because I wanted to see her munched on! I’m looking forward to these new characters that I have yet to even read about (just started on Abraham, Eugene, & Rosita)! This Negan guy has me piqued!!!

          • thewalkingdeadfanatic2 February 20, 2014 at 1:40 pm

Yeah. I’m excited to see him. See, on thewalkingdead.com, they have the story of the comics on here…But not the pictures- so I know what happens in the comics. But if I DO get on the show, dying to a famous comic character would be an honorable way to go- especially if I do it saving someone. *cough cough cough cough* Carl for example. Merge was a good actor- so it was a tad bit upsetting when Daryl found him zombiefied. I liked the gov, but after a while, he sort of reminded me of a rotten Apple. Used to be sort of ok, but now just stinks and grosses me out. Am I wrong, or has Daryl changed…. and not for the better? And was I the only one that found it a little odd that Daryl and Beth found that little shoe next to those walkers….who’s was it? And if this ‘terminus’ camp is so safe, why was that man and his group fleeing it?

          • Bastet February 20, 2014 at 1:56 pm

I steer clear of the posts in the comics section of this site! I’ll venture there when I’m caught up!

I don’t think Daryl’s changed…think he’s just fallen into a slump…kinda losing hope. Then he probably gets tired of the fight sometimes, as I’m sure they all do.

I thought that shoe was Mika’s, like the show was flipping time back and forth. Now I think it was just a smaller-sized shoe that upset Beth because she realizes it must’ve belonged to a child.

I know nothing about a “terminus”. That’s still future reading!

          • thewalkingdeadfanatic2 February 20, 2014 at 2:25 pm

Apparently ‘terminius’ means the end. The back of one of the zombies looked terrifyingly like my all time favorite character! Hopefully it wasn’t. Wouldn’t it be interesting if they found an abandon Disneyland?
