Episode 503: Four Walls and a Roof – Recap and Discussion

SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY! It’s TWD time! Episode 503 (Season 5, Episode 03, if you’re confused why we always write the episode is such a weird way). This week’s episode starts off EXACTLY where we ended last week so let’s just jump right in (we’ll keep this a bit shorter than last week’s epic novel of a recap):

Gareth continues to lecture poor, stumpy Bob. The Hunters are camped outside a school, walkers locked inside, banging at the windowed doors. Gareth tells Bob that they marked their way there so they could find their way back (“So stupid, right? I mean back to what?”) but I guess that’s who left the marks that Morgan was following. Will Morgan be able to continue following somehow after this all goes down?

Gareth tells Bob how they were going to offer the Survivors a choice, to live with them or die. He expounds for a while on how he really wants to eat Carol, even though they saw her take off with Daryl, and how women taste better than men. When he says he wants to try Sasha Bob starts crying/laughing which turns into full-on laughter. They all crowd around Bob. “You idiots! Hahahahaha! I’ve been bitten you stupid pricks! I’m tainted meat! HAHAHAHAHA!” Everyone starts spitting their food and freaking out. “TAINTED MEEEAAAT! YOU EATING TAINTED MEEEAAAT!” Gareth kicks Bob, knocking him out.

Sasha goes looking for Bob. When Rick and Tyreese show up she tells them they were being watched. Rick thinks Daryl and Carol might be with Bob. When Sasha gets back to the church she gives Gabriel the business. She thinks he’s responsible for Bob’s disappearance and knows who’s watching them. She pulls her knife on him when he pleads ignorance.

Rick confronts Gabriel with the evidence: the scratches on the church, the girl with the glasses. Gabriel comes clean. He tells them how his congregation came to the church scared only to find locked doors (he always locks the doors at night). There were so many people that he was scared, and they just got louder and angrier, drawing in the walkers. They screamed at him as they died. “The Lord sent you here to finally punish me. I’m damned! I was damned before. I always lock the doors! I always lock the doors!”

Gabriel collapses to the floor when a whistle is heard outside. They look outside and see Bob. They run out, grab him, kill some walkers and get back inside. Bob tells them what happened, and where he was. He tells them what Gareth told them about Daryl and Carol driving off. When they offer pain pills to Bob he shows them his bite wound.

Gabriel tells Rick that the school is just a 10 minute walk away. Abraham tells him that they have to leave. That Eugene is in danger. Rick won’t leave without Carol or Daryl. Tara offers to go with Abraham if they’ll agree to stay one more day. Abraham says they’ll stay if Glenn and Maggie come as well. Glenn and Maggie won’t go. When Rick and Abraham almost come to blows over taking the bus, Glenn agrees to go with them if they’ll stay a day. All parties agree.

Rick makes the case for attacking instead of waiting. When Sasha volunteers to go, Tyreese tries to talk her into staying. So she can have as much time as possible with Bob. But she is just about revenge. She leaves Tyreese in charge of taking care of Bob in case he dies.

Rick and his team leave the church and head into the woods. As they exit to the left, The Hunters arrive from the right. They’ve played right into The Hunters hands…

The Hunters break in. The group is hiding in one of two rooms. Carl pulls his gun. Gareth tries to talk them out into the open. He knows who’s there. He knows Rick took most of the guns. They come to the locked doors. Judith starts crying, giving away which room they’re in. As they’re about to breach…

ZIP! ZIP! Silenced gun fire takes out the two guys by the door. Rick and his team have come back to the church. Rick tells them to drop their guns. When Gareth balks Rick basically shoots his hand off. Completely surrounded, they drop their guns.

Gareth: You could’ve killed us when you came in, there must be a reason for that.
Rick: We didn’t want to waste the bullets.

Gareth tries to explain what they’ve done. Rick just gives him the hardest stare on the planet. “You’d do this to anyone, right? Besides, I already made you a promise.” OUT COMES THE RED-HANDLED MACHETE. Rick, Michonne, Abraham, and Sasha slice and club The Hunters to death. The others kind of look on in horror. It’s a brutal world.

When it’s all over, Michonne looks down and finds her katana in one of The Hunter’s packs.

Rick is once again covered in the blood of someone he’s killed. “It could have been us.”

Gabriel comes out and stands in front of a blood-stained wall and views the carnage. “This is the Lord’s house.” Maggie: “No. It’s just four walls and a roof.”

The next day the group says good bye to Bob. Bob asks Rick and Judith to stay behind. Bob thanks Rick. And tells him that he’s sticking with what he told Rick on the way to the Food Bank. “Nightmares end. They shouldn’t end who you are.” He looks at Judith. “Just look at her, and tell me the world isn’t gonna change.”

Sasha watches over a sleeping Bob. He wakes up. Sasha asks him what the good that comes out of this bad is. Bob doesn’t answer. He’s passed away. Sasha pulls her knife. Tyreese walks in. “Give it here. Now.” He sends Sasha away and takes care of Bob.

Abraham, Rosita, Eugene, Glenn, Maggie, and Tara get ready to leave. Abraham gives Rick a map and they promise to follow. You can tell that everyone is a little uneasy about splitting up. They drive off.

Rick opens the map. The route is marked and there’s a note at the bottom:

Rick goes to help Tyreese dig graves. Rick, “I never asked how it was for you. Getting to Terminus.” Tyreese, “It killed me.” Rick, “No it didn’t.”

Late that night, Gabriel comes out front and finds Michonne on watch. He tells her that now that he’s come clean, he can hear the people screaming. Michonne tells him it won’t stop, but it won’t be all the time.

When a noise comes from the woods, Gabriel retreats back into the church and Michonne draws her sword. She walks towards the sound and Daryl comes out. Her smile fades when she sees how distraught Daryl looks. “Where’s Carol?” she asks. Daryl turns and looks back into the woods. “Come on out” he says and CREDITS!

WHAT?! Is he telling Carol to come out? Or who?!?! SUSPENSE!

And how many of you thought Gareth was the Big Bad this season? Show of hands, don’t be shy. I know it was most of you because I read your tweets and comments. But Gareth had a date with a promise, and Rick keeps his promises. Especially the killing kind.

As usual, the web team here will pick a favorite comment—maybe it’s super insightful, maybe it’s hilarious, whatever—and that person will receive the Walking Dead trade paperback of their choice (sorry, not a compendium you sneaky bastard)!

Well, Rick wasn’t kidding about the machete with the red handle. No more meats back on the menu for you Gareth and his crew!

      Nice Gravatar, JMaese!

I have a really hard time believing that the group would be willing to separate, regardless of the situation, & Maggie is losing points by the episode for not being concerned about what happened to Beth. I also miss an iconic line from the comic….thought for sure Sasha was gonna take the place of a certain badass sniper! I do appreciate any little deviances from the comic, tho…keeps it interesting. Still, this was another awesome ep! Those Terminites found out they bit off more than they could chew!

Thanks! I like Kirkman new book ‘Outcast”. It was strange to see Rick group separate during that situation with the cannibals. I really want to see Rick do that gun hand gesture to Gareth and his crew from the comic. I still wonder who is going to replace Andrea (badass sniper). My guest, it could be Sasha or Carol. They both know how to snipe. Maybe, Daryl already told Maggie about Beth kidnapped when they were in that train crate at Terminus.

So far, this season is pacing a little faster and I like it! Every episode so far has been great but tonight was especially good. They kept one of the great stories from the books but as usual did a nice little change-up to keep both readers and non-readers in suspense. Who does Daryl have with him? Obviously not Carol from the way that he looked. Morgan? Beth? Negan? Can’t wait to find out.

    Tainted meat, finally! Brilliant work!

I’m really worried now, though. This whole thing with Beth… I’ve never hated Beth but I’m afraid her little arc will feel like nothing but filler.

What a great episode glad they used the tainted meat was pretty cool.seems that tyrese glenn and a few others don’t k ow about their group anymore since they see that rick and a few have lost a lot of their humanity AMD just brutally killed those people in a church x.x

    • DeadFan1973 October 31, 2014 at 2:01 pm - Reply

Humanity has long left the building… they were eating people, kill them in a church, kill them in the woods, kill them where-ever
Tyrese followed up by ‘killing’ Bob in the same church. I’m thinking there is little to no fear of god anymore. Last week Tyrese thought he killed Martin (not in a church) but his acceptance of their reality is emminent

Kinda wanted to slap Abraham, can’t wait till he finds out that poor Eugene’s cure is a bunch of bs.

I love seeing Rick go from 0 to 100 in the blink of an eye. My thought is that Daryl found Morgan, and Michonne will remember him from ‘Clear’. Eugene gave in to Abraham a little too quickly when Abraham said ‘now’. Makes a person wonder…….

I have been reading the graphic novels for 8 years. Fear The Hunters one of my favs. So cool to see it play out on screen. ASZ can’t wait!

What if it’s Lily in the woods with Daryl? Any time I don’t see someone die with my own eyes, I don’t believe it’s true. If she ran across Daryl and Carol (Carol better be alive!!) I feel like they would agree to bring her back. And it would make since for her to be hesitant to approach this group given her relationship with the Governor.

Plus, wouldn’t it be classic for her to show up right after her sister leaves to head to DC? Just a thought!

  12. BASTET. October 27, 2014 at 11:52 am - Reply

Carly, hasn’t Tara said that she watched walkers overcome Lilly & take her down? I’m pretty sure Lilly’s dead. Now, if Lilly’s sister was MAGGIE, we might could have hope!

  13. carlyyougoonie October 27, 2014 at 12:11 pm - Reply

Yeah, she said that, but we didn’t SEE it. And Tara saw that from a distance. Lily could have pulled a Ty and roared out of the crowd of walkers.

There is nothing better than seeing people go berserk that 99% of the time hold it together and try to do good things. It provides such a relief. This is very effective in movies and TV and the slaughter in the church perfectly realized that idea. A movie I like this idea in is The Descent where the main girl loses it and brutally murders the cave dwellers. The ability to see a shade of humanity behind brutal violence is a complicated idea, but it works in some cases

    • RICKisagod October 27, 2014 at 1:34 pm - Reply

I agree. I like the development with Rick’s character. I really thought the whole Rick vs Gareth confrontation would have been played out a little more. Getting rid of Gareth so soon was too convenient. My own personal opinion is they should have explored the concept of the “Clash of the Titans” thing with Rick and Gareth. One monster battling another. They are obviously taking Rick in a much darker direction. Gareth had already made the transformation in a monster completely. He had abandoned all humanity. That is why it was so funny when he inferred he was “trying” to be human through his conversation. Good writing though….

  15. RICKisagod October 27, 2014 at 1:25 pm - Reply

I didn’t necessarily like Gareth being offed so soon. I think they should reintroduce his character with a twist…..maybe a lost twin. The new character could be the good twin trying to live down his brother’s atrocities. Can you imagine Rick’s face when coming across such a character. It would make for a good psychological drama.I mean they really don’t want to turn this into just a hack ’em up Tarantino-esque story. That gets so tedious. I adore Andrew Lincoln. He was the perfect cast for this role. He was fabulous in Strike Back.

  16. pozsi October 27, 2014 at 2:50 pm - Reply

pls, explain me 1 thing. in the trailer of the 5th season at 0:45 Gareth’s voice narrates: “You join us, and we go to Washington, and cure this thing”. Actually, the “you join us” part was in this episode when G. explains Bob that they had a choice; joining them or feeding them. but when did he say anything about Washington? I know that the trailer is messed up at many parts, I mean they tried to deceive us in every way it’s possible (including when Rick says to Carl “I don’t trust this guy” then showing Gareth’s face, when it was all about Father Gabriel) but I just can’t get over it..

    • samM October 27, 2014 at 6:04 pm - Reply

That is exactly what I was thinking. I watched the trailer so many times that I instantly recognized the “You join us” part, but what about the Washington thing?

    • jmoore711b October 27, 2014 at 11:51 pm - Reply

I wondered about that too. I know that the WD team has a long history of mis-direction when it comes to trailers and spoilers (remember this one: One of the characters alive in the book currently will die in the S4 finale. I must have missed that part.) But if they recorded dialogue for a trailer that was never part of the script I’m going to have to be very skeptical about future trailers. Love the season so far though.

    • BASTET. October 28, 2014 at 6:26 am - Reply

pozsi I’ve tried to research this…still looking…the only thing I can come up with is that the Washington phrase was deleted. I’m just accepting it as that until someone else comes up with something better.

  17. zasurvivor October 27, 2014 at 2:58 pm - Reply

It was great that Rick kept his promise to Gareth about the red handled machete. Although the best part was when they placed Bob on Gabriel’s couch and the picture on the wall above him was the last supper which he truly was for Gareth and his crew.

Wow what a doozy of an episode man, Everything in it was so perfectly done. I loved the ending and Idk if your noticing a theme hear but every episode so far ends on a bit of cliffhanger, i think its because the last season finale of season 4 was a cliff hanger so now they realized how crazy it makes us when they do that! HA! But yeah omg omg omg The Hunters got killed basically almost sorta Exactly like how they did in the comics. Freaking Rad Amc, very Rad. SO some points id like to mention, the brutality in the way they killed the Hunters was it “Just Enough” or “Way Too Far” I personally think it was just enough if not, not enough at all! Look what they did to our Beloved Bob, but hey at least Bob officially broke his streak by not being the last person in the group again. There’s that Cosmic Justice theme going on as well too with Bob basically accepting his death and telling somebody at his death bed that you can’t let the nightmares change who you are lol. TAINTED MEAT….TAINTED MEAT!!! god that was probably the best part of the whole series if your only using Scenes taken straight from the Graphic Novel. And Bob played the part good if not better than Dale from the comics. Needless to say this episode was full force and its def a game changer, Where do they go from here? What’s next for our lil group of ragtag Survivors. Road to Washington for sure but what about Carol and Daryl and Beth,Who was with Daryl at the end? I hope we see Carol and Daryl in the next episode even though its all about Beth I think it will be about her escaping not her time there. Unfortunately I have an unsavory feeling that Carol may die because of it. I have my reasons of why i think that and I may share them sometime but now is not the time…. I cant believe Glen and Maggie just took off like that to Washington. I don’t know how that’s going to play out since that’s not in the comic at least i don’t believe it is…However final thoughts. Gareth is Dead Long Live Gareth y’all got to admit he made the perfect Hunter, And where the Fuckity Fucking Dick Fuck is…MORGAN! I cant wait for him, hes so badass to begin with but the way they showed him in the premiere, well lets just say Morgan Action Figure COMING SOON. Haha peace out much love to all you writers who make these discussions worth coming to and participating in. Oh yeah and the Comment system is working just fine for me :))

Someone should put together a montage of Rick mirdering people to an unnecessary degree. “Rick the Hit Man! He gets the job done. Several times!”

  20. Vegaiti October 27, 2014 at 6:12 pm - Reply

Soft episode, sorry I think it was very soft, I think we need to see more of the main guys to die, at the moment I think there are too many (sorry nothing again your jobs guys ) keep working hard until you die ;p
If you like the series you should read the comics, there are a little bit more “intense”

  21. Steve Grimes October 27, 2014 at 6:54 pm - Reply

I think that Sasha is going to be in the show what Andrea was in the comics. Maybe she’ll have a baby with Rick, Mochaccino Grimes.

  22. itsfoz October 27, 2014 at 7:36 pm - Reply

Absolutely loved this episode. However, I agree with above comments, was the ‘Washington’ quote from the trailer added in or, another possibility, maybe Rick mentioned Washington in an alternative pre-killing speech knowing Gareth wouldn’t be alive for it and thus changing what Gareth said to Rick so rather than suggesting letting him go and disappearing, he asked Rick to let him go and let them join them?

Also – I’m completely going out of the box here, but, anyone else believe Daryl’s found a child? We haven’t had any Clementime type (from the game) in the show and it would be an awesome time to have a lone ranger, in the form of a child in it. The way Daryl introduced the person and the way he looked down at them, suggests they’re either known to Michonne or young and therefore scared to come out, and also they’re shorter than Daryl or crouching/emerging from tree’s and therefore prepped for a ‘big reveal’ in someway/context.

Didn’t agree with the massacre being in the church. That is all.

Did anyone else notice the name of the city Abrahams group is headed to? We just got our 1st hint at Alexandria, who is destined to become the new star of this show!

  25. BillyHo October 27, 2014 at 11:17 pm - Reply

First time poster… long time walker.

So we know Daryl isn’t under duress because he is carrying his crossbow freely. So who is with him? The hesitancy of the reveal could lead to a few conclusions.

It could possibly be the DC crew that just left that afternoon, having been prevented in continuing their trek north for what ever reason and returning tails tucked between their legs in defeat with their journey ending before it could even begin?

It could be Carol ushering in a restrained driver who holds grim answers to Beth’s location?

It could be a previous character from the prison or elsewhere that we thought were lost in the world of the dead? With possible information to Beth’s location, having escaped or seen it first hand?

It could be Beth herself with a few others? With a large portion of the series episodes reflecting back on what happened to her at the hospital (only possible conclusion from sneak peaks given to us) and then leading up to current time period… allowing season closure with Rick’s group possibly confronting hospital group if Carol or others are now found to be under their control?

Too many things we could hypothesize. But one thing we do know is the markings were in fact left by the hunters. And Morgan following these marks at some point is going to meet up with Rick and likely pull a Carol moment by saving the group?

I am glad that the hunters storyline gave us a quick surprising conclusion to the terminus setup of last year and didn’t follow a standard season villain to defeat, and instead gave us a ‘Wow… that ended quickly. What now?’… waiting on the edge of my seat feeling.

Hoping my ‘saved from turning’ moment is as peaceful as was Bobs in his last moments. An easy slow knife to the temple from friends who care.

I loved this episode! I think everything in it was brilliant, except one thing that I’ll get to in a minute.
I don’t mind that the massacre happened in a church, buildings wouldn’t mean anything in a world like that, people that have God don’t need a house to prove it.
I think the groups response to Gareth and his minions was brutally perfect and if I’m honest I’m glad the terminus storyline is being put to bed so early. I love the fact that the writers have us in such a spin over what’s coming next.
My only issue with this episode was Glenn and Maggie! What the Hell dudes?? I can’t imagine they would split from the rest of the group so easily. I get that they wanted Abraham’s help but I don’t think they really even needed it, and to bargain Mr and Mrs Rhee for it seems nuts!! It only took about 6 of them to take out Woodbury so I’m sure they could have handled this situation without agreeing to that.
I think that generally the writers do an excellent job of helping us understand the emotional reasons behind a characters rationale, and we can normally get on board with a decision they make because the writers do such a good job of making us understand what that character is thinking, but I’m struggling with this one!
I know Glenn is all about hope but this seems really out of sync from a character that has stuck by Ricks side so loyally.
That’s just my opinion but on a lighter note, I hope Daryl’s found Father Christmas !!!

  27. dawson1023 October 28, 2014 at 11:29 am - Reply

Rick’s promise to keep was the highlight of the show. Totally loved Abraham’s little note to rick on the map. Glenn and Maggie broke from the group in the comics too so their departure makes sense. The sweetest reunion since carol and Daryl was Machionne and her sword. As for Daryl’s weird return… I’m thinking carol is with him but injured or helping someone else they found while chasing after Beth. I’m predicting that Daryl and Rick set out to rescue Beth leaving Carl, Judith and Tyress behind. And they will have to flee the church when that hoard at the school breaks free. I hope Carl does a Shane and sacrifices Gabriel to the hoard so they can get away. As for Morgan, I hope he shows up to save ricks butt just when it appears he’s about to get killed. Comic fans! Let’s not forget how far into it that Morgans character goes on. He will become a core member of the group this season.

Not only this episode, but so far this season has been so – fulfilling. Nothing is dragged out like Andrea and the governor (great ending there, but how many episodes did we see her just staying at Woodbury when she should have stayed at the prison). I think that is a direct correlation to what the people in this group have become… don’t beat around the bush – just kill everyone you don’t know .. or perceive as a threat so you are ready when the time comes to kill them). Biggest issue was Glean and Maggie leaving – didn’t make sense. Any sense. Beth was becoming a very cool character – hoping this flashback episode of what happened to her actually brings closure/resolution to this question mark. Probably not her with Daryl, he wasn’t gone long enough imo to have gone there, saved the day, and walked back….. we’ll see in a couple days
