Volume 23: Whispers Into Screams Discussion

Volume 23 is out! Whispers into Screams covers issues 133-138. Here are the big hits:

Rosita is preggo and not by the Euge, but he knows he’s not the father (drama!).

Carl gets a love note from Anna but it’s as he’s leaving Alexandria for the Hilltop where he scores an apprenticeship with Earl the blacksmith.

Carl straight-up almost murders two kids with a shovel when they pick on him and Sophia.

Maggie has to deal with the parents of the bullies AND with Carl.

Carl winds up in lock-up for a stint, where he meets Lydia, the captured Whisperer.

Speaking of the Whisperers, we learn more about these skin-suit wearing faux-walkers and their communal, quasi-nomadic living.

The parents of the bullies, angry at Maggie and Carl, join Gregory and agree that Maggie has GOT TO GO.

Gregory tries to poison Maggie and does an awful job of it (Maggie is pretty much fine—or IS she?). Jesus catches him and Gregory is thrown in the slammer, his fate undecided…

Lydia the little Whisperer is let out of jail, under Carl’s supervision. They end up getting uh… intimate.

Mama Whisperer (named Alpha) shows up and it’s time for Lydia to leave, despite Carl’s protests.

Sophia goes to check on Carl but the love-sick young man has left the Hilltop in pursuit of Lydia…

What did you guys think of this arc? Which characters surprised you? And, most importantly, WHO IS THE FATHER!? This is your place to discuss it! Plop a comment down below! You know the routine: The best of y’all gets a signed copy of Volume 23, signed by Mr. Robert Kirkman himself.

Single-issue readers, don’t discuss events passed 138, please! I will smack you with my ban hammer!

UPDATE: And the winner for our favorite comment is samM, whose rap summarizing the volume was quite formidable. SamM, your volume is on its way!

Imprecionante as Carl’s character takes his space and grows within the series , the story of this boy is getting increasingly interesting both on the survival and still have time to have love one’s neighbor as will be with Lydia , thus giving time more hope for a better world , in the world we are living .

beat-boxing starts: time for a negan rap
i love zombies especially when their dead so get a bullet embedded up in their head because im headed to alexandria!

Negan’s out of prison and he’s going to start killing like its a hobby of his, he loves hitting people with his bat to you it sounds like screaming but to him it sounds like jazz.

And rick begs him to stop like his cock was lodged down in rick’s sensitive spot.

Negan rocks these polka dots bursts from zombies he’s killed, along with 10 other main characters robert kirkman aint thrilled.

Cause on his way to pick up lucille, he tries to hit as many zombies as he can, main characters may harder targets, but dont worry cause negan’s the man.

His boys greet him by his first name in the saviors, with fresh dwight carcass,
    shredded by lucille’s kiss.

He’s known for killing off Glenn, the Orsons and Spencer Monroe for them hoes he has back at his base even though they used to be wives, with lives…..

If you find a dead main character in his yard you can bet he didnt kill them very easy, they were most likely slaughtered like poultry, dont make negan your enemy.

Here try his bat oh wait you cant cause he’s most likely killed you with it.

And dont even try to run up to him and spit, cause the only thing you’ll be spitting is your teeth after they’ve been knocked out by the bat towards your face that now looks like a zombies feet.

Dont be a fool unless you can use the right tool. or negan will kill you and your people.

Shoot our carl’s eye and he’ll be singing like “im blind again im blind again”.

When he falls to the ground he’s back in the hospital but this time he’s fully blind but alive so he’s grateful so rick and his people grab their guns and grab their rifles.
all out war number 2 whisperers/negan vs rick and his people lets do it.

    shitty rap over.
hurry up and give me my signed copy lol

From whispers to screams, this sums up my reactions to a t, i can honestly say every issue started with me going, “…what?” and ending with me going, “WHAAAAAAAT!?!?!” Not only (to me) the most exciting arc because of solid story develoment and the introduction of my new favorite crew of murderers, but it turns out i kinda like being left in the dark with whats going on, i cant wait to see how everything plays out and ive got my fingers crossed that things go the way i hope, hahaha allthough im sure they wont, all in all a fanstatic volume with a thumbs up from old maximum party, keep killin it guys!

    Remember that epic Dante battle?
Remember how cool it was to see Jesus kicking more ass?
Remember that adrenaline rush when Carl comes back with a shovel & administers a beat down?
Remember when you just wanted Gregory to be next up on somebody’s ass-kicking list?
Remember that heart-clinching feeling when you thought Maggie was a goner?
Remember what weirdo cutie-pie Lydia did to freak you out?
    That’s great writing right there!
That’s great artwork right there, too!

When reading your ‘big hits” of this volume’s arc, a pattern quickly becomes clear…..Carl. Now, I tend to put more interest into other characters who are developing now such as Maggie…but Carl sure seems to have been the focus to push this story forward into new territory, figuratively and literally. We’re seeing him become a man (in more ways than one…eh….elbow, elbow) and take charge of himself….and in the process taking action to protect others he cares about regardless of the consequences (like father, like son). He’s also already gone through more shit than almost any other character and stands as strong as ever…as does his resolve. It sure seems that Carl is our future for The Walking Dead.

Ok so I would love to make the most epic comment and win however… I have not yet read the issues in this Volume (I know Blasphemy) because I have been awaiting the release of the Volume itself. That said as a result I have avoided reading the post (because…well Spoilers!) and have no idea how I can win and just hope this comment is sufficient.

    For Carl, Sophia.
    Things ARE going well.
    But Dante’s life,
    Is shot straight to hell.
    —-
    As Jesus fights,
    Carl swings back,
    After he’s hit.
    Brick, shovel! Thwack!
    —-
    Carl’s imprisoned,
    He meets a young Whisperer.
    Greg’ry hates Maggie:
    “With death, we’ll dismiss her.”
    —-
    Carl is freed,
    While Whisperers chat.
    Rick sees Andrea.
    Carl gives Lydia hat.
    —–
    The two teens bond,
    While Maggie is poisoned.
    Lydia’s a bit creepy,
And licks that poor boy’s skin.
    —-
    Alpha shows up,
    To Carl’s dismay.
    “I’ll find you Lydia,
    They won’t take you… …NOT TODAY!”
