Yeah, I wouldn’t expect Negan to be physically freed here. Rick will probably speak with him on how he would approach the situation as a leader and well… Rick might slip up and let Negan’s ideology free by taking his advice.

Not gonna lie. I’ve wanted him out for so long but now that it’s actually possibly happening it’s making me rreeeeeaalllly fucking nervous.

Called it…. From my post in the 146 discussion:

Actually, at this time, now more than ever, it would make sense for Rick to (secretively) seek guidance from Negan. Negan has a very particular skill set that makes him absolutely dangerous in a situation like this.

I doubt there will ever be redemption with Negan. Its not his character. He might not even be released. But at this point, Rick needs to pick his brain more than anyone else’s. Negan ruled with an iron fist. He damn near crushed Rick’s group. It could have gone either way. The man knows how to fight a war. Something Rick has forgotten.

Fear will keep the local survivors in line. Fear of this Negan.

And I would totally give someone at Skybound my wife’s cat for a Kirkman autographed copy of #149, if anyone out there is reading…

This cover made me squeal, shit this is getting printed and hung on my wall. Yep.

I agree with those who think it’s more symbolic than reality. I think Rick will seek Negan’s advice, or perhaps he’ll even just be tempted to react in a way Negan would… so he’s sitting there, trying to resist his darkest, most violent urges.

Note: one of Negan’s hands is entirely in shadow. Could have gotten Lucelle back?!?!?

Maybe it’s not so much a cover bluff, as much as it’s symbolism. Negan being the devil on his shoulder. Advising Rick in ways that are evil but make sense. Challenging Ricks beliefs as of now. After re-reading and looking deeper. It’s some heavy shit. Love you Kirkman and crew.

I mean that is the greatest TWD cover of all time!!!!

#149? Pure Godfather-level type of image! I do not even want to guess at what is going on in this issue…

While everyone is having an orgy with Issue #149’s cover, I’m sitting here feeling heartbroken that they broke their traditional colors for the Omnibuses. :'(

I knew Negan was going to be let out to guide Rick in the next war right when the Whisperers first showed up.

So 147 we have Andrea putting the plan in motion where they will make it look like they killed Lydia.
148 we have Alpha crying over the death of her daughter.
149 as mentioned above, devil on the shoulder or Rick picking the brain of a madman on how Alpha might think.

O.M.G. Finally after almost a year and a half of boring sucky issues, 144, 145, 146 finally feel like I’m reading The Walking dead again. Up until then I was convinced that it should have just ended at the end of AOW with RIck and Negan killing each other. The last issue had some of that deep contrast looks of pain, sorrow, and horror on character’s faces that almost reminds me of some panels in Fear the Hunters. I can feel that dark emotion while I’m reading the issues again. Kirkman finally stopped hacking it up with bad issues. And now this cover for 149! I hate Negan as a character, he’s the simplistic one-note Andrew Dice Clay of the zombie apocalypse. But this is gonna be really good for TWD. After the time jump I felt like I wasn’t reading Rick anymore, more like some some wuss dumbed down version of him; he doesn’t even look like Rick. This is gonna be Rick breaking bad style and it’s gonna take the book in a fresh direction. I see that Kirkman was playing the long con with keeping Negan alive so long for absolutely a good reason. But alas, Rick will finally learn his lesson about this new world and it’s gonna be about Carl in a year or two tops. It seemed like Kirkman was trying to do a Game of Thrones style story with 100 characters stuffed into a 15 minute a month story. I really hope 3/4 of the characters die because there are just too many nobodies i just don’t give a crap about. If he’s smart he’ll keep the book going in this trajectory back to the feel of the old walking dead but with fresh story ideas and major character deaths that come out of nowhere instead of in milestone issues. God i hate Negan, but this is gonna be so good seeing Negan and Rick on the same side, while Rick slowly slips back into that dark version of his former glory.

I’m going to stay firmly camped out in the “This is only symbolic” camp. I really don’t think Rick would let Negan out unless the community was in full-collapse (Meaning I don’t think Rick would just leave Negan to die); I do, however, believe that Rick is more in love with his power/position than he leads on, and it’s a status that he needs to maintain for the sake of his psyche. Desperate times call for desperate actions, and it certainly looks like things are getting dire, quick. That may mean it’s time to reach out to someone like Negan to help justify actions you can’t justify on your own. So, Rick may have something awful in mind and will seek Negan’s approval (or, at least, a recognition that there are no alternatives to whatever horrible thing he’s got to do).

Either that, or it’s just an allusion to Rick losing his grip on humanity and slowly succumbing to the ‘dark side’ like Negan did. While Negan may not be freed, his ideology and methodology may be let loose through Rick’s actions.
