The Walking Dead 140 Discussion

The Walking Dead 140 is out this week! This post is here for you, dear reader, to discuss this issue as soon as you get your grubby little mitts on it. We’re putting this up early, so we’re not going to give anything away BUT, I will tell you this: prepare yourself before the end because you may rip your copy up. #Cliffhanger #NotTakingAboutTheStalloneMovie #ButThatMovieIsAwesome

Drop a comment, like it is hot, in the comments section below and we will send, via post, to you, a signed copy of issue 140, provided that your comment is qualified as the absolute best by Lizzy Iverson (no relation to Allen—or wait, Lizzy, ARE YOU RELATED TO ALLEN IVERSON?!?!) and myself.

UPDATE: And the winner is… JoshW, whose comparison of Maggie and Rick was both fun and insightful. Look out for an email from us and we’ll get that signed comic straight in the mail!

OH MY GOD NEGAN IS FREE!!! I love negans character. I got chills when he cut off his hair and his line at the end of the issue gave me even more chills! NEGAN IS BACK! I hope he doesn’t kill or use anyone as a hostage though. This was an amazing issue i love it!

OMG Negan!!! More havoc on the way! Loving Charlie Adlard’s drawings as per normal.

Oh wow… Huge whisperer camp, Negan is out, and a pending execution… I love this comic. My favorite part is when Maggie said “Carl is on his own”. I can’t wait to see Rick’s reaction to all of this.

  7. mewpals April 8, 2015 at 9:49 am - Reply

Great issue. I wonder if the insecure lock was an accident, or part of some bigger scheme? If Negan finds his way back to the Saviors, that’s going to be big trouble for the communities Rick and company have worked so hard to build. After all, Jesus seemed to foreshadow that even after two years, the Saviors are most likely still loyal to Negan… it’s possible they may become a threat again. And with the great numbers of Whisperers shown, it seems some conflict may arise soon (in epic proportions!). Very interested in seeing where the story goes from here, in addition to the relationships of all these groups/characters.

Negans back to cause havok and Carl’s on his own, (per Maggie).
I really hope Rick or Carl kill that F’er with his own weapon (Lucille), can’t wait to see his entrance to the show….. EPIC!!!!

The Shite is going to hit the fan!…..Carelessness or intentional, we will find out. Although this issue seemed very short, it was a very fast read….

wow this was a GREAT issue after seeing the whispers camp i think rick & company are in for a BIG suprise some time soon can you say ALL OUT WAR 2!!!!! i wonder why lydia is acting all weird towards carl when she told him you shouldnt of come after me & had that pissed off look on her face you would think she would be happy to see carl its almost like she was just playing him while she was being held captive so they wouldnt kill her. but anyways my favorite part about this issue was seeing the whispers camp i couldnt believe how big it was it seemed like they were having there own fair lol. that was pretty cool at the very end seeing negans cell door open & him walk out what i think happened was that women that was suppose to lock his door didnt on purpose she was having trouble with it for a second anyways & i no that negan is a pretty smooth talker so if that is what happened im sure he somehow told that women something to manipulate her into letting him out but we will see. great issue yall thanks cant wait for issue #141 next month.

Carl is one tough cookie and could teach those Skin Walking/Whispers a thing or two about general bad-assery. Negan on the other hand, well, I hope he and Rick have an epic showdown. But now that Michonne is a pirate, maybe she can ask Negan to use Lucille as her peg leg?

    Negan is free!
I am wearing my Free Negan shirt with pride today. One of the best issues ever. Loved it.

  13. mattbeef April 8, 2015 at 10:44 am - Reply

I actually think Negan is going to be reformed eventually and become a “good guy” character. Rick’s whole reason for not killing him was so Negan could see they society they could build once Negan & the Saviors were not holding them back.

Just a prediction… Negan will “blend in” for a bit unrecognized with the new haircut, see the town and be impressed with the setup. Then some unexpected crisis will happen (maybe at the Fair) and Negan will actually be the good guy and help the town. Then gain acceptance, etc.

Or I’m wrong and he will continue to be the foul mouthed dick we love.

Hello all. I am a long-time reader; first time in the comments… Wow. I am so excited for the direction this comic is taking. It’s been a long build but has been enjoyable along the way and I think the payoff will be huge. Seeing the Whisperer camp and the cleaning of the skins was pretty creepy/cool. I wonder how Carl will fit in with this group. And Negan…hold the freaking phone… I predict that the Whisperers will use Carl as leverage with Alexandria and eventually form a wide scale attack on the other surviving groups. I think Negan will indeed undergo some type of redemption story over the next few issues. Maybe he is instrumental in the defense of Alexandria from the Whisperers? Maybe he escapes and runs into Carl on the outside and joins up with him? Or maybe he will kill Rick and take over Alexandria? I mean the possibilities are endless and I can’t wait to see what’s in store. I just wish I hadn’t seen next month’s cover beforehand and the open cell would have had more impact at the end.

  15. Elise April 8, 2015 at 12:32 pm - Reply

Okay, so Negan is FINALLY free! I’m just trying to understand how the women locked it incorrectly, or did she do it on purpose?? Hmmm… well Maggie DEFINITELY needs to kill Gregory. HE is just TOO shady, how can anyone trust him? Michonne seems very distraught. I feel like she is letting her past creep up on her again. I wonder if that is why she left for a while, then came back? Of course, Carl is doing is own thing finding Lydia. I just wonder if he made the right decision. From what Lydia is saying, doesn’t seem like he did! Can Alpha be trusted, or is Carl going to have to kill her? Ugh, definitely a cliff hanger!

  16. vikita April 8, 2015 at 12:42 pm - Reply

OMG! Im so excited about what’s going to happen next!
Negan I don’t trust you, and I hate you since you killed my poor Glenn 🙁
I think Negan is going to ruin everything or kill someone important
And not less important…who left the door open? maybe it was intentional

And If they don’t like Maggie’s leadership they are free to go 😀

Damn, every issue lately has me on the edge of my seat more so than usual! Because there is so much that could potentially happen! Rick made a mention in Issue #140 about Dwight being at Alexandria to pick up some supplies. So maybe Shoeless Negan runs into Dwight at Alexandria? Maybe Magna and her posse save the day?? Maybe Negan fucks everything up at Alexandria and burns the whole place down??? Including fucking up the upcoming fair which I am REALLY holding out at my last hope of pure, unadulterated happiness in a world full of shite!! ORRRR maybe the end of #140 was a Red Herring and the outcome of Negan’s open cell will turn out to be much less dramatic (???). Like in #141 maybe Olivia comes back downstairs a few minutes later with the armed Andrea in tow because she forgot to sweep up Negan’s hair, they see him out, say “Hey get back in there or we shoot you!”, he gets back in, they lock the cell, wag their finger at him… and potential crisis is quickly averted. But the real outcome of Negan’s potential escape in the upcoming issues will probably fall somewhere in the middle between pure chaos and pure boredom. He has no shoes on so he can’t get far without stepping on something sharp, eh. A few questions after reading #140, though- how has Negan maintained such a muscular physique after being locked up for over 2 years? Wouldn’t he be a bit flabby since he sits around most days and can’t work out on the traditional prison weight bench? And about The Whisperers- if they are based in the D.C. area how has NO ONE from either Alexandria, The Hilltop or The Saviors run into them over the past few years? There were lots of safe routes mapped out around the area, some of them presumably pretty far out so the chances of encountering them seem inevitable in the past. The Whisperers look to be a big-ass group so there’s lot of them roaming around too. UNLESS The Whisperers are in the midst of their 2015 East-To-West Coast Nationwide Tour and just happened to be passing through the D.C. area lately en route to The Midwest or something? Argh, so many questions. I must be patient as everything will unfold over the coming months. And years… after Issue #140 I am thinking of changing my handle name from “Are The Horses In The Stable” to the new iconic phrase “Hold The Fucking Phone”!

  18. arethehorsesinthestable April 8, 2015 at 12:59 pm - Reply

More thoughts… if Negan does start some chaos, maybe he’ll first go after Olivia for insinuating during the haircut that he was not packing some John Holmes-type of heat in the downstairs area. No guy likes being told something like that.

  19. JoshW April 8, 2015 at 1:00 pm - Reply

I want to talk about Maggie the most, but HOLY SHIT!…Negan is free! We had to figure it was going to happen sooner or later….you don’t keep a character like that alive and not have a later purpose for him. I have to admit though, I thought It would have gone down a little more Escape From Alcatraz or Shawshank rather than….”oops.” You’ve got a firing squad on the guy while he bathes…..double-check the damn lock! That shot of him dripping wet wearing nothing but a towel and a smile is super creepy….I love it!

Maggie, on the other hand, is facing some “Rick-type” decision choices. We all know that Gregory needs to die….like…REALLY needs to die…but Maggie has never been that person to take another life when there are other options. This is the same thing Rick has battled with this entire journey…and to see Maggie have to face a similar situation is very interesting. She is totally different than Rick, and if she follows through with it, the aftermath is going to be unpredictable. I think this is HUGE for Maggie’s character and ultimate story…things are going to change from this point on!

Slack-Jawed and flabbergasted! That’s the best way to describe my reaction to Negan being free. Who in the hell left the gate open? Is going to have a lot more meaning in Issue 141. I hope I make it, my nerves are shot! Things were too peaceful and now chaos is about to be unleashed on farmer Rick and crew. Then again maybe Kirkman and team will shock us with a reformed and rehabilitated Negan! LOL

  25. STUlijdsbone April 8, 2015 at 3:29 pm - Reply

Negan and Carl have a weird relationship, Carl being one of the only people to go talk to him like a normal person on almost a daily basis, compared to how everyone else treats him. That may have an impact on Negan if Carl is ever threatened. But yeah it’s been said, theres so many ways this story could go right now and its hard to guess.

    Wait a minute…
You have had a mortal enemy locked up for over two years. You know how he can manipulate the worst of society into forming an army, even to the point of treating him like a king. You have him alive as an example of what you do to such a person…
…and you don’t check the lock?!

  28. Undersolo April 8, 2015 at 7:16 pm - Reply

Let me continue with my cut off comment:
Negan gets out, just in time for the fair. Gregory somehow plays a role in this, and they create havoc in the community, as soon as Mr. N. finds some shoes! And then…
Well, keep me guessing… I also want to know more about the Whisperers camp, Michonne’s self-loathing and the lengths to which Carl proves that he cares for Lydia…
What a story… Keep them coming!

Loved it, loved it so goddamn much, oh my god you guys, so i cant wait for shit to hit the fan with all the whisperers and negan and all gregorys bullshit AND carl being on the loose, its getting out of hand fast and i reeeaaallly love it, im also curious if negan was let out “accidently on purpose” to show that sometimes you need to kill a motherfucker dead, then immediatly point at greg, i sure am hoping thats the case, they both need bullets, plus i hope carls ok, that fuckin guy needs to watch his step being in a group so dangerous, and speaking of which, A FUCKING HUGE WHISPERER CAMP?!?!?! Ive been conflicted on how to feel about these jerks but that was way too cool, all in all great and good, cant wait for more, kudos on another killer issue

  30. Gristle April 8, 2015 at 7:54 pm - Reply

Yeah 140! Great couple of twists! Negan will hide and then redeem himself at the fair by executing Gregory in front of everyone and the communities will ink a deal with the Whisperers to trade for beef. Walkers will somehow be involved or at least visible in a few places. Chaos ensues!

  31. ZodiacMan April 8, 2015 at 8:02 pm - Reply

Why now, after at least two years, is Negan getting a haircut? And it just so happens to be the night that the lock on his cell fails. Too coincidental for my liking, someone has to be playing assistance, perhaps even without Negan’s knowledge, he does look genuinely surprised. Issue 125 – Negan started to come around to Rick’s proposal of building a safe zone between communities right before the ol’ “SVAASH!” to his throat. Does he still agree with the proposal, we know Carl has held onto to his grudge, will Negan now that potental freedom to just a step away. That’s why I love this series so much 140 issues down and Kirkman and co still bring fresh questions to the table

  33. grimeyrick April 9, 2015 at 7:08 am - Reply

    alright here we go,
Olivia and Negan have been fucking on the low, note the subtleties. she purposely left the door unlocked to help Negan escape during the commotion of the fair. I don’t think Negan is billy bad ass anymore, and is probably in a place closer to where Morgan seems to be at in the show (maybe a little less positive). kind of a zen state if you will? Rick neutered him, he doesn’t have the desire to swear, let alone murder. Negan is going to hide out at Olivia’s during the fair.
Meanwhile, Carl see’s the savagery that goes on within the whisperers group, and sneaks away with Lydia in the night and makes it to the fair in Alexandria, they kick it for the fair, and Michonne joins too. Michonne left because she is bitter that ‘Zeke got Rosita pregnant, and doesn’t want to feel responsible when ‘Zeke abandons his unborn child to stay with Michonne, because he told her he would and thats why she left. That is also why It stirs up her emotions about her abandoned kids, and the only way she can cope/ keep ‘Zeke away from her is to leave out on the seas. During the commotion of the fair, Negan sneaks out, and so does Michonne after she gets mad when something Ezekiel related happens. Michonne leave to the open sea with crew and Negan stows away. He’ll plead his case and show he’s not a threat once discovered by Michonne and they will have their own adventures! Pirates of the Wherever They’re At
    BACK TO THE FAIR,
everyone is chilling having a good time (this might happen after, who knows i dont give a shit), and all of a sudden, BOOM, two page spread of whisperers completely surrounding Alexandria, dope Charlie Adlard shit.
They meet and greet and slide, similar to what happened at the Hilltop maybe? not sure what i think will happen to Carl and his wifey. we’ll sure see drama at the fair, since all three of his honeys will be there. (Sofia, Lydia, girl that showed her boobs.. Abby? whatever)
    ANYWAY
all that junk will brew for a few issues, before they talk more about this silk road (so to speak) and decide that they have enough ammo (since they’re stockpiling the shit right) to start exterminating the dead. The whisperers, who are sort of the new age Native Americans (the way they live as a tribe, live off the land, and even wear outfits) will be upset, which is the set up for ALL OUT WAR 2: Civilization vs. the whisperers/undead. Negan will come back, having proved himself a good companion with Michonne and will fight alongside rick grimes in the war. Rick will die in the war. Carl will be torn between the groups. and other stuff

    save the applause.

and I never saw who won the last one of these?

    • grimeyrick April 9, 2015 at 7:12 am - Reply

      OH OH!
      MY BRAIN DIDNT STOP YET,

Rick dies, Negan takes the reins in commanding the troops, Carl will blame Negan for the circumstances of Rick’s death somehow and hold a grudge against everyone and fight alongside the whisperers. Oh, and backtracking, when they show up at Alexandria during/after the fair, i think there will be some conflict between Rick and alpha, causing bad blood, Rick will scold Carl and tell him what to do, so Carl will do the opposite and join the whisperers and he won’t see Rick until he is dead.

What better punishment is there for Gregory than putting him in a cell with Negan. Maggie just isn’t thinking right is she

  36. seanmathews1 April 9, 2015 at 11:36 am - Reply

This could be interesting. Negan is far from stupid. He realizes Rick could have killed him, but instead spared him. I wonder if that influences his actions. Is he reformed, or is he Negan. I can’t wait to see how this plays out. A good chance for some further character building. I think there is more to Negan than we know.

Or Kirkman is just messing with us again and the door to the basement is locked and Negan cant go anywhere regardless.

  37. Tonnie2NA April 9, 2015 at 5:43 pm - Reply

I’m pretty sure Rick was right when he told Negan he was whipped like a fucking dog. I think Negan is gonna realize how well off he has it and will simply shut the gate.
It wouldn’t have mattered cuz it was a trick and Andrea is standing at the top of the basement door with a shotgun, just to see what Negan would do.
They are just mind fucking Negan, mind fucking him all the way to the ass

  38. jmoore711b April 10, 2015 at 5:49 pm - Reply

The writing is so good. You have Maggie questioning whether Negan would be a threat imprisoned at the Hilltop. While she is considering that they didn’t kill Negan as a rule, he is walking out of his prison cell. So perfect timing to show that maybe they should have killed him. Only thing that bothers me is that if she is worried about his influence, why not the obvious solution of locking him up in Alexandria where no one cares about him?

  39. Dead666 April 10, 2015 at 9:40 pm - Reply

Issue 141 Cover shows Negan seemingly free
Issue 142 Cover shows the fair
Issue 143 Cover shows Carl and a girl holding hands (most prob Lydia)
Issue 144 Cover shows Rick distraught (cover has no title)

Here are my thoughts as I was reading
–Issue 140 image does not appear in the comic… (Issues’ 138 & 139 covers somewhat do) When I saw the 140 cover, I thought something happened to Maggie’s kid.
–Michonne… It seems she is chasing demons. Rick is a good friend, and funny image showing the fish handler’s butt crack. Who’s Pete? Don’t remember if that was Ezequiel’s real name. It seems Michonne will go to the fair.
–Dwight at Alexandria. Does he carry Lucille with him? Will he try to visit Negan in his cell?
–Gregory = Despicable me 3! What a terrible character. I agree with Jesus, it is not as cut & dry as with Negan. I think they should not kill Gregory. Need to set the example. If they go to the fair, who stays behind to guard the place? Will they leave Gregory behind? Who will guard him? Do you kill him before the fair without consulting with Rick? Do you take him with you for a trial?
–Carl is on his own. And that is not a problem per se. The kid is tough as nails.
–Whisperers. WTF! Huge camp; many people. Not more than the ASZ/K/HT/S combined, probably more than any one of them individually. Now, wouldn’t the fires/cows/horses attract walkers? Didn’t the good guys handle a huge hoard on issue 127?
–BTW, where is Magna & Co?
–Gregory, again. Tough call for Maggie & Co. When and how? It reminds me of the TV episode when they could not kill the young guy in the barn, and Shane ends up killing him.
–Negan! Interesting comment by the woman cutting his hair (“Much less of a man…”). I found It very odd that she could not lock the door the first time. And he is potentially free. Does he know that Rick is not there? Will he attempt to escape anyways?
–The shirt in the final image and the shirt in the 141 cover do not seem to be the same
–Six issues away from issue 150…

What if Maggie & Jesus decide to transport Gregory to ASZ so they can have a jury? Probably ASZ has the only jail, and allows Rick to participate. We could have a massive showdown: Rick, Maggie, Michonne, Douglas, Dwight, Negan, Ezequiel, Jesus. Seriously, Jesus! Gregory tries to kill Rick, and Negan saves the day. Now what?

Final thought, who could play Neagn in the TV series?
What about Dwane “The Rock” Johnson? Or Vin Diesel maybe

I sure thought this cover was about a death, then as a result of a misplaced comment, I thought it was a jail-breaking Gregory! Cover Bluffers are fucking AWESOME! So was that double page spread of the Whisperers! I’m delightedly surprised at Maggie. She was never one of my favorite characters, but the nonchalant attitude she’s had about Rick & now her decision that Gregory should die is intriguing! I am glad that this “we don’t kill people” rule is not set in stone; I never did fully agree with that. However, I don’t think Gregory will die by the hands of someone who holds this principle. Maybe the Harlan & Rose families will stand up against him & take matters into their own hands. Negan free… WOW! How in the hell will I be able to wait for issue #141 to be delivered?!

I really think the offhand comment about Dwight being at Alexandria is going to be something big. He will probably have Lucille with him. And Negan’s out. And if Negan was going to kill anyone, he would kill that mofo Dwight.
I really want him to be a good boy though. Well, not good… that would be no fun ;P
    But not a villain 😉
