The Walking Dead Issue 138 Discussion

The Walking Dead 138 is out today! One thing is clear: Trouble is on the horizon.

Let us know what you thought, what you noticed, what you think will happen next, whatever! We’ll take our favorite post and reward that person with riches. Riches in this case being defined as a signed copy of The Walking Dead 138. Worth less than cover price because Robert Kirkman has written his name on it for some reason.

UPDATE: Our favorite comment was from mewpals, who had some interesting theories and speculations about Alpha! Congrats!!

All Carl ever wanted was for a girl to lick his eyehole and tell him it’s sexy. Is that too much to ask girls? Accept Carl for who he is and he will go to the ends of the earth to protect you. Well, that and sex. He’s going to need some sex.

  2. mewpals March 11, 2015 at 11:28 am - Reply

Alpha already looks like an awesome new nemesis to stand next to the Governor and Negan. “Alpha” probably alludes to the alpha wolf of the pack, and the capability to make necessary sacrifices when need – which may be why she requires Lydia to call her “Alpha” instead of “mom”. I wonder if it’s an act, or if she really has no emotional side – It’s going to be interesting to see where this goes. As for the boat next issue, no idea where that route is going… don’t think it’ll be the whisperers (although Dante did mention it sounded like they had thousands, so who knows what their situation is). I’m looking forward to see where the comics go, and seeing how civilized or savage the Whisperers actually are.

    • Tonnie2NA March 11, 2015 at 11:48 am - Reply

I thought Dante was more referring to the fact that they had thousands of zeds at their disposal as protection and show of force. That could be a pretty devastating threat especially when the success of these communities relies heavily on the trade routes that connect them, and Rick made it clear that it was crucial to keep it clear.

Carl’s only chance at love just left and he’s sure as shit not going to give up some more fun time XD

  4. Thiala March 11, 2015 at 11:37 am - Reply

I just hope that Carl didn’t just do something stupid that gets him killed. Just because the people at The Hilltop were nice to Lydia when she got captured that doesn’t mean that The Whisperers will be as nice to Carl if he gets captured.

  5. Tonnie2NA March 11, 2015 at 11:43 am - Reply

Holy funking shit. This issue was so goddamn awesome. I love the whispers, they always just seemed misunderstood. And they are definitely gonna play a huge role in whatever Kirkman has got cooking up for the future of these communities. This is not the last we’ll see of alpha, clearly the leader of this WOLF PACK…

  6. Tonnie2NA March 11, 2015 at 11:45 am - Reply

And what a fucking idiot Gregory is. Where was that double tap? Hope they feed him to the wolves.

  7. CharmsTWD March 11, 2015 at 11:45 am - Reply

Carl Grimes is a man now. A man with a hole in his face, and now, a hole in his heart.

But in all seriousness, I want to see Ricks reaction to all that has happened at the Hilltop, mostly involving Carl. This should be good.

  8. jojodesca March 11, 2015 at 11:58 am - Reply

Wow…that was an INTENSE issue. Carl is really starting to come into his own. I love the “hell hath no fury” look on his face at the end. it was like he was making a statement that “no one puts Carl in the corner”. I love the character development that is going on, the connection that they are making together. Eagerly awaiting the next issue!!!

The sex was FINE.. sure very nice Lydia. Nice issue new character appears and I like it. That Alpha MOM looks like shaved and bald Glenn to me, and she will be definetly new nemesis with ZOMBIE FASHION STYLE. I hope that Magna will come back soon I kinda like her. And I really want to know who and why let out Negan of his cell.

  11. mheasley1011 March 11, 2015 at 12:08 pm - Reply

I really like how Alpha wear the ouroboros. This symbol represents primordial unity, which means the dualistic world should have a unified causeless cause otherwise it will end up in a logical fallacy. It is the perfect symbol for how The Whisperers society works. They serve The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead serve them and it is for no reason but survival. Like Lydia said humans try to convince ourselves we are no animals which is a logical fallacy. Oh Kirkman just when I thought this comic couldn’t get any better you get all philosophical on us and blow my mind yet again 🙂

  12. drumcrush March 11, 2015 at 12:24 pm - Reply

wow, this was a pretty interesting issue. Gregory is SOOOO fucked. cant wait to see what his future is like. they should make Negan his jail mate, that would surely make things interesting.
pretty weir that Alpha, being female, allowed her daughter to be “raped”. the whisperers really are quite interesting. I sure hope Carl doesnt fuck anything up.
Cant wait for the next issue! the cover has me excited!

    • Derek1st March 12, 2015 at 12:10 am - Reply

Negan is in the ALEXANDRIA prison, gregory will be sent to the HILLTOP prison. however given that he attempted to assassinate the leader, and given his pull with some members inside the territory, he will likely be exiled. Maybe he’ll dethrown alpha ;D

This issue was way better than Lydia & Carls Sex! Ha! But seriously I love that the Whisperers aren’t just a cheap thrill, a few issues and done. It seems like a big and very interesting set up that may have a very deadly pay off with a gut wrenching outcome! The characters didn’t just get a new beginning, us fans also got an amazing comic that, in my eyes, has reinvented itself! Bravo Kirkman & Crew!

  14. ChrisX008 March 11, 2015 at 12:49 pm - Reply

Very glad to see Lydia wasn’t manipulating Carl after all, because I really like her. I was sad when she returned with her people (although Carl is not going to keep quiet about it), but I’m really really happy that Dante is alright and back, because he seemed such a nice and hilarious man and I just want him to be Maggie’s boyfriend after they get some development together. I’m thinking that the “poison” Maggie drunk is going to have secondary effects such as hallucinations; now the cover for 140 makes some sense looking it that way. And epic Jesus kicking lame Gregory’s ass was… well, epic!

Let’s see what the story has in store for us. Seems like we will have at least three regular settings now: Alexandria (and the sea?), Hilltop and the anywhere with Carl following the Whisperers. Definitely, if A New Beginning was a refreshing breeze, Whispers Into Screams has been a HURRICANE of emotions that promises even more good things to come. Kirkman has my entire devotion for this story and Invincible.

Dante tell about whisperers group having thousand just got me off guard. I can’t wait to see what Carl does next. Him finding Lydia and the Whisperer’s location reminds me of issue 104 when Carl rides off to find Negan and opens fire on the Saviors. This issue was fantastic! You know it was going to good when the opening was Jesus

  16. icartnella March 11, 2015 at 12:56 pm - Reply

Dat Jesus dropkick in the first panel tho..

  17. 890X001 March 11, 2015 at 1:00 pm - Reply

Sent that a little too early… Oh well, you know it is going to be a good issue when it opens with Jesus landing a flying kick on someone.

  18. Neutral-Grey March 11, 2015 at 1:25 pm - Reply

I still don’t like these whisperer folks. They may not seem as “evil” as their initial appearance would lead one to believe, but we have no idea how much land they think is “their territory.” They could be killing more of Maggie’s men for imagined slights because we have no idea what “border” they think they might have. For civilization to rise again in full, this group is going to eventually have to go.

As for Carl… Man, I love you and your my favorite character. But you need to let her go. Maggie’s right. You only knew her for a day. Guess that’s part of being his age, though. His hormones are raging hard and at that young impressionable age any attention a girl will give you that goes in that “direction” really will consume your head and mess with your thoughts. To him, it’s probably the most “real” sensation he thinks he’s ever encountered.

*Turns over first page* “KIAAAIIAH!!!!!!” Jesus ninja kicks douche Gregory in the back!! They need to send Gregory to the pits and get his back fixed by the doctor in The Dark Knight Rises! DESHI DESHI BASURA BASURA. That kick reminds of the Family Guy episode where Peter roundhouse kicks everything! When Alpha said, ” You call me Alpha, like all the rest” it seems like the Whisperer’s are going to be a cold, strict, orderly type of group. That last picture of Carl on the last page was “RAD” by the way! Can’t wait for the next issue!!!

Great issue I think that the walkers that had the W carved in their heads are walkers that Negans crew killed and belong to the whispers and the lady Alpha. I would say this might be a angle in the TV show. Just a thought but one thing for sure the comics are getting better building up Carl and Lydia and a possible new war or maybe new allies.

  21. Ghetto Gator March 11, 2015 at 1:55 pm - Reply

I was wondering when they were going to introduce a female villain, I’m interested to see how the Whisperers handle Carl following them…I’m pretty sure Alpha wouldn’t be as welcome to Carl as Negan was. Alpha seems smart and somewhat caring for Lydia, but I don’t think think Lydia is Alpha’s only “daughter”…it might be some sort of Game of Thrones Daenerys Mhysa thing going on. I’d also like to know if they have thousands…why do they have teenagers out in the field killing people? And is there any meaning to the Ouroboros belt buckle?

Also: Thank you, Kirkman for keeping Dante alive…we need a likable asshole in The Walking Dead.

    This comic was rad.
I feel so bad for Lydia and hope Carl rescues her. xD Maybe a huge fight between the communities that wipes out most of the Whisperers, but Lydia and some other good guy Whisperers get to join the community?

Or they could be the downfall of this civilization Rick started. 😉

  23. Ozzie91 March 11, 2015 at 2:24 pm - Reply

Surprised by how reasonable they were but they’re definitely not ppl you want to f**k with. Can’t wait for the next issue. I heard it’s gonna be “RAD” lol.

    • seanmathews1 March 12, 2015 at 4:18 am - Reply

It would seem they have reverted back to an almost animalistic state. Look what Lydia said about being raped, or used. “Alpha”. That’s a term used within the animal kingdom. Their acceptance that their own people were killed is also animalistic. It was a territorial dispute, nothing more. Very strange. They have dehumanized themselves. That is dangerous. For Rick and co.

I’m just really happy the Whisperer’s aren’t the stereotypical bad people, things can still work out! It was cool how they were reasonable and civil, not something you’d expect from people who WEAR DEAD PEOPLE’S SKIN

  28. eman185 March 11, 2015 at 5:54 pm - Reply

I think having the leader of the whisperers turn out to be a female is awesome! I hope even more that Alpha is more of a bad ass than The Governor and Negan combined! That would be crazy to read! Plus I like the whole Maggie and Alpha build up. It’s about time you give Rick a break from another villain since he still has Negan locked up…for now. And when will Michonne return?!?!? It’s not The Walking Dead without Michonne! Great issue!!!!!

    “Hey Paul it’s okay.
    I’m back from the brink.
    Don’t worry ’bout me
And throw this prick in the “Clink.”

    “Oh wow, that was great!.
    You don’t really have skill,
But sure beats all those times,
    That ’twas ‘gainst my will.”

    “What are you saying?!?!
    It was against your desire?
    As long as I live
I won’t throw you back to that fire.”

    “Maggie and Jesus
    Come quick! Oh my Lord!
    There’s something outside!
    It’s a Whisperer horde!”

    “My name is Alpha
And I wish for no slaughter.
    Your men, unharmed
    In exchange for my daughter.”

    “Please, oh please Maggie
    Just listen to her tales.
    Don’t send her back
    To those perverted zombie males.”

    “Carl, I beg you
    Please let her go.
I want Dante and Ken back
    So calm your libido.”

    He watched her go.
    She glanced over her shoulder.
    And in that moment
His heart got ten times colder.

    “There were thousands of them!
It was quite a strange time.
    But they didn’t eat people:
They never stooped to THAT crime…”

    “Hey, it’s Sophia
    I heard you were sad.”
And in the words of R. Kirkman
    That’s def’nitely not “rad.”

    But she couldn’t find Carl
    Despite her loud crying
For he had left to save Lydia

    …OR DIE TRYING.

Carl is definitely more interesting in knowing about the new group than is sex. Lydia is just a excuse. Every teenager would do the same.

  42. David_TWD_fan March 12, 2015 at 1:46 pm - Reply

In comparing this newest group, the Whisperers, the extent of their threat to the existing colonies is not clear. Additionally, now that the survivors know what to look out for – humans wearing walker masks, they should be much easier to spot. The fact that they don’t have a clearly marked territory, however, means that stumbling into them is always a risk.

Still, their position seems to be – avoid us and we will leave you alone. That is almost opposite of the 50% taxation and murder lust of Negan. A sense of danger leads to greater drama and more engaging story telling. I am just hoping to see a greater sense of threat.

Now with Carl entering their territory and a rescue party probably not far behind, conflict looms. I am just hoping for a greater sense of risk and thus more intense dramatic interactions in their future dealings with Rick and his followers.

I’m really excited for future issues of The Walking Dead. based on how 138 ended, Im really left in shock, of what might happen, and even 138 is the last issue in volume 23, so even people buy volume 23 will be left in shock of how it ended as well. What could the future hold for and maybe even Lydia, or maybe a twist of events with Sophia? What is going to happen with Negan, Rick and the people of Alexandria? And what is the origin, if I at call it, with the Whisperers? I have been a fan for a long time for the tv show and comics, I have the first and second compendium, the first 5 books, and even all the tv seasons on blu-Ray. I honest think that Robert Kirkman, is great in this way, and he my even have some more thought on TWD’s future. Charlie Adlard’s work is STUNNING. I It looks so good, and he’s pretty talented, And he is one of the inspirations for me to continuing to draw, and I must say that I enjoy. s And in the end, no matter how the tv show ends, or the comics, No one will ever forget the work that Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard’s, and the others on set for the tv show and the actors, Andrew Lincoln, Chandler Riggs, and Norman Reedus, who is one of my personal favorite actors. I really enjoy the comics and show, and I wish it will never end, It’s story is too great. great work, Robert Kirmak, Stefano Guadiano, Charlie Adlard’s, and last but not least Cliff Rathburn.

Interesting that Alpha is the leader. And the mother. And female. And still, her 16 year old daughter talks about how the others mate with her as if she’s a rabbit or mouse. Semi-unrelated: we haven’t really focused too much on their walker bodyguards in the comic…the sheer possibility that the carved W in the walkers foreheads on the show could be the whisperers is pretty exciting. I gotta say: Part of me was hoping the whisperers would have been some sort of Indian tribe. Would be a great way to get their land back…lol

This issue is important in the way we see a completely opposite approach to a groups way of surviving with the Whisperers. While we see the approach of restoring or maintaining a domesticated society as we know it by the Survivor’s, the Whisperers have taken a more primitive route as to not worry about laws and justice and go with a naturalistic/animalistic approach. You cant help but fall for Lydia, even with the eye licking as she is so accepting of Carl’s blemish where as we see Sophia returns Carls glasses right away so importantly. We also see Carl take another big step into adulthood with his first sexual encounter and feelings of love, loss of love & heartbreak. The introduction of the Whisperers&Lydia is a welcomed addition to the series to see how others have survived and how the groups will coexist respecting each others choices of how they choose to do it. Its all so similar to our own real world differences of race, beliefs, cultures, religions & choices of how we survive in our own lives. Can’t wait for next issue as usual!

What an awesome issue! We finally know who the leader of the Whisperers are and it is none other than Lydia’s mother! It seems like Gregory can’t do anything right. All he had to do was make sure he had enough poison and enough liquid for it to dissolve in (Gregory must of failed his grade 7 science). The best thing about this issue, Gregory getting a kick to the face! It was a long time coming but it was all worth it! I can’t wait to see what happens to Carl now that he’s gone off on his quest to find Lydia (Legend of Zelda style!). Do you think Carl will bring Lydia back or will he join the whisperers?

If Jesus jump kicking Gregory doesn’t make you happy, then there is no pleasing you. Poison was a good choice of weapon for a coward like old Greg. What did he give her though? Man I hate that guy so he is a awesome character. I like the idea of him being locked up with Negan but it may not happen. It makes sense to imprison Gregory in Alexandria for a few reasons he lead at Hilltop for awhile and must have Allies and knowledge of Hilltop holding area which looked like it had a regular door and no ceiling more of a barn kind of feel to me where Alexandria prison when we see Negan looks super secure. To be honest I didn’t think Gregory had the balls to get his hands dirty and make the move on his own. He waited 2 years or so for someone to have a problem with Maggie. The old enemy of my enemy thing right? That’s how the problem with Negan and the Saviors was handled Hilltop wouldn’t fight, but they were happy to let Rick and his crew to fight for them. I like being wrong on my assumptions here and there good job TWD crew. Now lets talk Alpha. I see a female Rick in some of her actions. She has assumed the burden of leadership and approached the problem one of the first ways Rick himself did way back when he and Glen made that supply run to the Gun Shop in Atlanta, and again when he tried to lead Carl, Jessie, and Ron out of Alexandria when the herd breached the walls. Dead camouflage It is a old tactic modified for the new world “going undercover” Observe your enemy infiltrate their ranks use their resources to make yourself stronger. Follow the rules based on experience. I cant shake the feeling that Negan has intelligence on the Whisperers something that will develop his character to the next level in the way of his origin or maybe a way of redemptionfor his sins. Negan has done some unforgivable things. I mean Glenn dying as soon as he and Maggie getting pregnant, that cut deep. Rick has done some horrible things too for the greater good who decides what thatis? Plus he, Andrea, and Michonne took out like 10 of the saviors first and Blood needs blood does it not? What leadership or strong survivor hasnt done horrible thing to survive or serve the greater good? Lets think on Douglas Monroe. Abraham, the Governor, Michone, even Tyrese the often preacher of humanity has himself chosen when those rules don’t apply. With Negan’s firm position on capitial punishment for sexual crimes, coupled with his need to explain how he doesn’t like enforcing the rules with strict brutal punishment he “in fact hates to have to behave in that way” That is why in my opinion he named his weapon Lucille this way he doesn’t have to take responsibility Lucille needed blood she needed vengeance because she is a bitch like that and Negan uses her strength to uphold the rules because why everybody? BECAUSE THE RULES KEEP US ALIVE! Good job. Now this is not personal I actually kind of like you. However you broke the rules and must have your face melted with a hot iron so everyone knows what happens when you break the rules. After a few months everyone forgets a zombie bit Johnny. zombies bit 99.9 % of the world that shit happens right? Nobody forgets what happens when you sleep with Negans wife even if she was your wife consensually getting it on and your Negans 2nd in command your face is getting burned. I think Alpha telling her daughter to call her Alpha is to protect her. The pillow talk from Lydia pisses me off too really pisses me off to be honest so If I were Carl I may considering freeing Negan for some muscle. Even Carl cant think going at it alone is smart, and he may see it as a chance to rehab his friend Negan as his talk with Maggie seemed to hit home he freed Lydia and was given quite a positive reinforcement after that he lost his v-card. He might think it is a smart play and if all goes wrong and Negan doesn’t take to the task and possible redemption from past sins who better then Carl Grimes to Kill him?

I thought the issue was brilliant. I believe Carl will find he has more in common with the Whispers than he does with his fathers people. The Whispers respect power and I think Carl will in some brutal way become their leader. It’s wonderful how Kirkman made Carl my favorite character (sorry Rick!) after so many years of just finding him kinda annoying. I’ve been reading religiously since issue #3 first came out and it only gets better. Thanks guys!!!
