The Walking Dead 136 Discussion

Hey gang! It’s TWD day! Issue 136 is out right now and we want to hear what you thought. Our favorite comment, as chosen by a combination of impartial Skybounders, ouija board, and divining rod will receive a signed copy (by Robert Kirkman himself) of issue 136.

Some things to consider:
Gregory is clearly kind of out of his mind. What’s going to happen there? Is Carl going to get shanked?
We learned more about The Whisperers via Lydia. What do you guys make of them?
What’s Maggie going to do to the bullies (AKA the “fucking monsters”)? And will that just galvanize people against her?
The leader of the Whisperers is on his/her way! Who wants to speculate?
Every time I think Carl is going to go full Negan he does something really decent. How cute is the hat scene at the end?

Also, hey, how about that Compendium 3 cover and release news?!
And you better have voted in our 2014 comic polls.

UPDATE: And the winner is… mheasley1011, whose comment about Gregory was our favorite!

Love the hat, but I think Lydia is trying to get Carl in her side and then scape. Shopia will stop this! Killing also Gregory in the way!!!

Pretty fun issue! Glad to see Rick is ok. I also liked Maggie here. “As far as I’m concerned those families can fuck off”

Holy shit, what a epic issue!
Funny how Rick just got back to Alexandria when Carl is already in deep shit.

The leader of the Whisperers is one of the reasons I’m anxious to see in next issue (or another). I’m guessing that he/she could be Swedish because the buckle on his belt is sort of a symbol (from issue 138).

By the way, NEED MORE NEGAN. I’m so excited to hear more from him again soon.

Read whole issue for 5 minutes…now we wait for issue 137 in four weeks.

Like my comment & i’ll give the issue to one of my likers, honest.

I get the feeling that the leader of the walkie-talkies might be someone we already know. Michonne, perhaps?I know, it seems a bit far fetched. I’m really looking forward to her return, in whatever form it might be. Crossing my fingers for 137. I’m also pretty excited that there is a new character with my name. That doesn’t happen very often. “Lydia” isn’t super common. Never had pencils with my name on them as a kid or anything (although I did get to hear “Lydia the Tattooed Lady” from pretty much every teacher I had). And if she’s ever a figure? MINE.

I can’t believe I’m saying it, and this is a first, but… I actually like Carl right now! And, as much as it looks like Lydia is going to use Carl to try and escape, I’m rooting for her to actually be awesome and become part of the society and leave the Whisperers. Who knows, maybe the Whisperers will even help out with building a better tomorrow! (probably not though) 🙁

Every time Carl does some crazy shit that makes people think he may be turning evil, he proves once again he’s a very sensible boy. At least in the regards of his rage filled actions.

Still not sure about Lydia but she seems legit. I don’t think there’s anyway she could have faked that crying for an unknown period of time just on the off-chance Carl would be outside the door. But we’ll have to see. Giving her his hat was adorable. My heart sang.

As for the events, I’m glad the “redneck” families know the action is extreme. And even though the father agreed with Gregory at the end, his reluctance to do so from the start could be very telling. Might be that they go along with the plan until the horror of how evil it is kicks in.

And looks like Jesus is ready to start swinging.

    Very good issue.

I’m looking forward to the next issue and how will it all go down. Also how will Gregory and his dirtbag friends pull off to kill Maggie and Carl?
P.S. Since Carl bailed out Lydia(I think), will she get along with his people try to convince him to join the Whispers?

  11. Caesar January 14, 2015 at 3:05 pm - Reply

Two issues left until some kind of reveal or climax. Maybe we’ll finally have a hint of Michonne. More likely they’ll prob give a ship on the horizon to show a new group in time for that issue 139 cover.

There is a special place in hell reserved for cowards like Gregory who plot to kill women and children. It’s called being Negan’s cellmate.

I don’t trust Lydia, though I kinda want to. Do not kill Carl. Please. He is the one who leads the book! (Rick Grimes who?)

What if Michone is on the boat that we see on the cover of the March issue and that’s when we get to see her return? Also this issue was pretty cool I like Lydia over Sophia for Carl.

  16. Houstonz January 14, 2015 at 5:50 pm - Reply

I hope Lydia is actually as she appears at the end of 136. Trustworthy, kind, etc. If Gregory and whoever actually come after Carl, I could see her being his saving grace.

I’m anxious to see what’s to come with the passing of Rick’s hat to Lydia. Carl gives it to her for a sense of security as it gave him (and as readers have seen), but could it just be smoke and mirrors? Will it continue to have an “invincible” element to it, or now that Carl’s done said it himself has he jinxed it and now it’s meaningless and they’re just all gonna die? Or maybe he’ll change/die and Lydia will come to prominence? So many possibilities.

Side Note: Feel free to tell me how f*cked up this is, but with some people wanting Carl dead.. I have to say I feel that the only person who should kill Carl is Negan. I’d like the ultra-climactic sequence of seeing Negan (at some point in the future) snapping Carl’s neck, Rick losing his shit and murdering Negan, thus shattering any sense of moral superiority and “civilization” he thought he built. In front of everyone. Gosh that sounds like it could go places. Or maybe not. *shrug*

Alrighty well i LOVED this, loving maggie right now and i cant wait till those little assholes wake up either, im worried about her though cause good old greg cant just fuck off every now and again, and since the deadnecks are game im not exactly sure what to expect, twd’s always been good at that, im diggin carls maturity cause ive never been fully sure how much he gets ricks idea, but im happy he at least seems to, but im not sure if i can trust lydia, id sure like to cause having a former whisperer would be waaaay dope but im also very pumped for 138 so im down either way, lets meet the demon gypsy king already! Also more dope art, im reeeaallly loving these goddamn covers yo, theyre…theyre really fucking good

  19. daniel615 January 14, 2015 at 9:24 pm - Reply

I think that lydia will be the one that saves carl from gregory & the rednecks. I also think that at some point before issue #139 maggie will get killed i hate to say that because i like her but it just seems like thats where this is going. But anyways i cant wait to see this leader of the whispers its going to be interesting to see what kind of rescue attempt they make to get lydia back. Last thing after this issue i am really starting to think that carl is going to break lydia out its pretty obvious that he feels bad for her & wants to comfort her i mean i woulda NEVER expected him to give someone else his hat but thats cool id rather see carl with lydia then sophia anyways. But TWD is AWESOME each issue keeps getting BETTER & BETTER + the covers keep getting sicker & sicker keep up the good work guys.

There is no way this plan to kill Carl and Maggie will work. It is ridiculous on so many levels. First of all, there ain’t no way anybody is killing badass, stone cold, they should spell it with a K, Carl. I loved how we got to see his interaction with Lydia, saying straight up “I Always Live.” He’s got nothing to fear cuz he does not take half measures and he sleeps with one eye open . Maggie I’m not as certain about (poor Hershel), but she has clearly proven herself to be worth a fuck to the Hilltop community. Communities which seem to be thriving and that have a people who seem to think that that Maggie and Rick (most importantly) are beneficial. Which brings me to my second point: an unexpected power shift would lead to the Hilltop losing all the benefit that the community system provides, and would most definitely provoke an attack from Rick, who would never accept Gregory as a leader following the death of two of his closest family members. It is absolutely absurd and I am very upset about how fucking stupid the Gregory insurgency is. Have they not considered what Rick will fucking do. I mean, all I can think is he is going to go Hunters all over them. It’s not even about his rage, it’s about the fact that he likely still dominates ammo supply and manufacturing. And it would not be surprising to discover that Rick withheld the extent to which his stockpiles and arsenal have expanded. I’m sure Rick really won’t cut each and every Hilltop residents feet off with a dull rusty saw and throw them to the walkers (although he should if Carl dies). But all he really needs to do is roll up with a posse and tons of guns, and BOOM Negan has a couple new butt buddies for life. What a shame this insurgency is, just so fucking petty for people who have so much in that world. Although I get the very very hugely strong feeling that this Whisperers arc is the beginning of the end for the Hilltop community compound, so it probably won’t matter for all that long anyway. Lydia made it very clear that if she were with her people there would be no reason to be afraid of Hilltop. She scares the shit out of me, but I like to see that she’s not insane. These people seem somewhat reasonable, but like she said about the Whisperers “We’ve dealt with so many people… We don’t tend to wait around for new people to kill us first. This place won’t last.” The Whisperers clearly know how to deal with communities and seem to have huge numbers, on top of that they have probably been recruiting some of the many herds that Eugene has been diverting for the past couple years. Our survivors think they can deal with herds of tens of thousands, but what about millions. I have a feeling we are about to see some swift and brutal action from this mystery leader very soon. FUCKING PUMPED

Carl + Lydia = <3 Although, Lydia's half a decade older than him. But didn't Andrea say in Issue 129 to Carl, "And it might be a while, and it might well be you visiting with your wife and kids… but you'll be back."

  22. Ghetto Gator January 15, 2015 at 6:02 am - Reply

Really loving this storyline so far, I’ve been waiting for Carl to get a love interest after his falling out with Sophia during All Out War, but now it seems he might have two…Coral is a playa. Interested to see if Lydia is playing Carl due to The Whispers stating she was strong and she could handle herself, but I do think there is a connection between Carl and Lydia that is going to lead into a little teenage romance. I’m also hoping we get to see more of Magna and Dante.

And to Kirkman, this is usually the part where I ask you to not kill off my favorite characters. But, instead of that I’m going to ask you to kill Gregory and the “Fuckwad” Rednecks.

  23. jesusrocks24 January 15, 2015 at 9:04 am - Reply

    This is my theory
Rick goes to check on Carl as he’s worried sick(as fathers do) and as he gets there carl gets shanked by Gregory or the redneck father and they notice that Rick is there so they leave the building in a hurry and all rick sees is them leaving Carl’s house so he goes to check on Carl and he’s lying on the floor with a stab wound in his stomach so he gets medical attention and as this is happening Rick confronts the person who does this and Rick completely snaps and kills them.

Also where is father Gabriel I don’t have any emotional attachments to him or anything but we just ain’t seen him for like 30-40 issues I just have a strange felling he was forgotten about lol

  24. carlyyougoonie January 15, 2015 at 10:32 am - Reply

First of all, Carl giving Lydia his hat didn’t make me go all squee. Carl! What the fuck, brother? Sophia is laying half dead in the hospital. How about you pop in on her and see if she needs your hat for comfort rather than an unknown girl who killed some of your people?!? Not to mention, you just had some sweet moments with Sophia and then turned around and gave the equivalent of your letter jacket to another girl. D’oh! Come on man!

Also, Lydia is bad. I’m saying that now.

  25. Dead666 January 15, 2015 at 10:46 am - Reply

This issue gave me the creeps about Lydia. I get the feeling that she is not as sweet nor as innocent as it appears. Seems she is trying to befriend Carl to take advantage of the situation to facilitate her escape, and return with intel. Issue 137 cover shows a somewhat “mad / pissed off” Carl. Could it be he discovers Lydia’s betrayal?

About the whisperers, Lydia says “… we have the dead with us …” What if this group can control **large** (as in very very large) hordes of walkers? More than any of the current communities can handle with their herding techniques? I can see the Whisperers’ leader showing up with a million or more of walkers and setting a siege until Lydia is returned… (issue 138)

The gender of the Whisperers’Leader is well kept, the reference is “Leader is coming”, cleverly done…

The kids that attacked Sophia will be “tried” and thrown in jail, which pisses off their parents and is the last straw to put Gregory’s plot in motion

Gregory’s plot… There is always people whom will follow anyone no matter how stupid the idea is (check human history…) Gregory is trying to execute a coup d’état without being the principal figure in case it fails. There will be an attempt, some will die (Maggie? The rednecks involved in the plot?), it will fail but Gregory will be able to detach himself from the situation and appear as if he has nothing to do with it. Leaving the door open for a new try later.

So maybe in issue 138 we have two different things happening at Maggie’s, Gregory and Lydia’s rescue. There will be dead characters… And although Issue 139 cover (the boat) seems to transmit the whisperers are no longer a threat. I think that the showdown will end in an impasse, and they will keep coming back later…

How do we fit Michonne in this? Do we need to have her back? Rick did say “After all it happened…” So what happened with her??? We may have to wait past #139

If I learned something, Kirkman always does what we do not anticipate…

BTW, Maggie’s last name is misspelled (Green instead of Greene) when the redneck says “… Maggie Green has to die…”

  26. heroereaut January 15, 2015 at 11:59 am - Reply

listen to me you dumb Futher Muckers this is the shit thats gonna go down.
The whisperers leader will be a bad ass mother his name will be Benjamin or hermes.
he will vow that you join his group or die.
Gregory and the thick red necks will kill Maggie and then try to kill Carl, Lydia will help Carl to escape and be captured by the whisperers.
Rick finds out and kills anyone who has betrayed his group gregoery etc.
Negan will find out about Carl and their plan to kill him and take sides with Rick and Rick allows Negan to take his role while he takes off to find and rescue Carl.
he meets Benjamin and the war begins, Queen Michonne returns and explains they have been living on either an island or a floating man made island as the walkers cant swim.
You cannot kill off rick or Carl as they’re the main characters, also I don’t think Negan will be killed off as hes an absolute legend of a charactor and needs to stay.
I hope this happens but will be happy with any outcome as twd is great…

I’ve got a bad feeling about all this! Carl should realize how dangerous Lydia is. Their group seems like they will kill anyone they meet without scoping out whether they are a threat or not. But what I think will happen to Carl is that he will completely forget about Sophia and go head over heels in love for this girl whose killed some of the people he would of known and is clearly trying to manipulate him to break her free.

Now onto the subject of Gregory and his redneck rangers. God damn it Gregory! Think about it. After you kill Maggie, you are going to have Alexandria and most likely the Kingdom on your ass. Before you go off and assume she’s a bad leader, actually witness the decisions she makes for the Hilltop. But you wouldn’t want to listen to reason. And now that you have your redneck rangers (a name of my own design), you think your going to become top-shit really quickly. There are only five people who want Maggie dead so far. You are clearly out-numbered by the Maggie supporters. And you want to kill Carl too? That’s not going to happen in a million years (Eugene will make a steampunk-esque body for Carl and transplant his consciousness into it so he can live forever! Suck it Carl-haters!).

Issue 136 really showed a side of the series we haven seen much of. It showed a lot of crossover. I liked that we got to get a peek or Andrea and Rick coming back home. I liked seeing the whisperers preparing an attack on the hilltop, seeing Maggie with Carl and Carl with Lydia. It’s nicer to see a change of pace and look into all of our characters instead of focusing in on one focal point. This issue had a lot going on and I hope to see more of it in the further issues to come.

While reading this one person did pop into my head as to who the leader of the whisperers maybe….
now bear with here it maybe a bit of a long-shot but I’m thinking its Davidson, we never really saw what happened to him after he was exiled from the ASZ

I proposed this many issues ago and someone straightened me out. Apparently there was a “Letter Hacks” that talked about Davidson, Andrew and other characters that seemingly disappeared never to be seen again. Kirkman stated that these people were dead and wont be seen again. Although, Kirkman does like to fuck with people.

Lydia has Carl’s hat. When Greg and his stupid red necks, brain her by mistake, they are in a world of hurt, from Hill-top, Alexandria, and the Whisperers for what they did, and what they tried to do.

All Gregory had to do to get the local trailer folk on board with killing Maggie was to offer a 6-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon.

I have a strange feeling Lydia is the leader of the Whisperers.

When will the winner of the signed #136 be announced?

  38. Aerora January 20, 2015 at 3:18 pm - Reply

I don’t think Lydia is the leader of the Whisperers because when the Whisperers are talking outside the Hilltop, they say the Leader is coming and that Lydia is strong, she can wait. I’ll be surprised if the leader of the Whisperers is anyone we’ve seen before.

Gregory IS out of his mind. Maggie is a bad ass and will be able to kill the parents that are trying to kill her or get them locked up at least. Gregory will go for Carl and Lydia will be out by then with Carl’s magic hat and will save Carl from getting killed by Gregory but will die saving him. Little does Carl know that his magic hat only protects him and only gives him the powers of invincibility. Even if someone else is wearing it they will automatically want to protect Carl over their self. I’m sure it will surprise and sadden him that his magic hat doesn’t work for Lydia. That was sweet of him though.

I could also see Sophia trying to protect Carl and getting killed. Oh the hell that will break loose…

I swear if Lydia turns out to just be manipulating Carl I’m gonna lose my hope of humanity in the walking dead…. Oh wait that was gone when i seen the hunters, nom nom nom dats some good people leg, and then there was lucille, but ANYWAYS so yeah pretty much what i was saying is that my hope of humanity in the walking dead was gone long ago and im pretty much expecting lydia to go for the back stab.

WOW. What a damn shame. Starting to lose faith in these fucking comment contests. Why post a series of rhetorical questions to spark conversation if you aren’t even going to consider the people who address those questions. This is a fucking DISCUSSION, not a facebook like contest

It is incredibly disheartening to see the people who clearly care a lot about TWD put so much time, effort and thought into a winning post only to be beaten by someone who contributed a single thirty second brain fart. I don’t know why, but Skybound clearly does not have a criteria for these contest winners. Probably to increase the traffic to their site by favoring those who don’t often post, knowing that traffic from people who frequently post wont decrease when slighted. I want some consistency, especially when the prize is something so special. A one liner should have won the Facebook contest they held, not the discussion contest. I’m sure nobody would care, but I’m not going to be able to participate if these discussion boards are full of stupid one-liners yielding no critical analyses; and that’s exactly where it’s going if these are the losers this month.

I feel ya… I just keep telling myself that it’s not necessarily “the best” comment they’re looking for but “their favorite”, for whatever reason. I hope that doesn’t keep you from commenting… good discussion/debate is hard to come by & is a delight to read and/or participate in! In all the years that I’ve been here, I’ve only won once & probably won’t ever win again, so it’s the discussion that keeps me coming back… that & being able to simply express my devotion in a community that’s unlike other communities where there’s so much BS until it makes you wonder if you’re weird for NOT being a total fucktard! Simply put, don’t think your insightful, witty, thoughtful comments go unnoticed & unappreciated; don’t think it’s in vain.

I’m late (this is what happens when you *upgrade from digital to print & your pre-orders end up being backordered while you wait for the sub to kick in, UGH!).
I loved how much story this one issue covered! It was packed!!
    Short & to the point:
    > I’m not suspicious of Lydia at all. In fact, she may be the fix to a nasty battle between Hilltop & the whisperers.
    > When Lydia talked about dealing with bad people, I couldn’t help but think of Magna; maybe that’s just some wishful thinking, but at the sight of her first appearance, I sure got hyped up on the idea of a female antagonistic leader! A part of me still thinks this could be possible (& wishing it).
    > I’m thinking that Gregory won’t be up to the idea of killing Carl; he’s selfish, his goal is to take over, & it’s Maggie who’s standing in the way. The rednecks want Carl, Gregory wants Maggie. If one is to die, my bets are on Maggie… just my thoughts.

I know I tend to go against the majority on predictions & I’m forever wrong. But so are a lot of other people who’s predictions are totally different than mine. THAT IS WHAT’S SO FREAKIN’ AWESOME ABOUT THIS COMIC!!

*The cover of #137 is a major reason for the upgrade!

Kinda agree about Lydia, she might help bridge the disconnect between these two communities. And I’m not sure I followed your next thought correctly; but it would be cool to find out that the Whisperers aren’t really a big deal and that Magna is actually the most detrimental thing happening to their communities now. That would certainly be a mind fucker

      • BASTET. January 25, 2015 at 1:59 pm - Reply

I do think the whisperers are a formidable threat, but I also think that Lydia could possibly be a mediator. Maybe she is the daughter of the leader. I just feel like Kirkman might be trying to divert our attention & then pop a major surprise on us. Could be with Michonne but could also be with Magna… who I feel entered the scene with some spark but then quickly fizzled out. I just can’t see Magna & crew remaining in the shadows. My speculative imagination is all over the place & it’s just fun as hell to see what we all come up with vs. what actually happens!

Sometimes I write a paragraph or two and sometimes I write a a sentence or two. To assume someone doesn’t care about the comic as much as you do because you didn’t win is the reason why you shouldn’t assume because you make an ass(out of)u(and)me. I comment about each comic because I like to discuss the comic I love so much and I like to read what other people have to say about it. I would still post my comments even if there were no prizes. Skybound doesn’t have to give out gifts every month but they do and it because of that you know they really care about TWD fans.

Thank you Bastet! I also can’t wait for #137. That cover is crazy! Carl has been my favorite character for a while now. I’m curious how Dwight is holding up these days. I really began to like Dwight as the All Out War story wrapped up. I think Magna is definitely someone to watch out for, I don’t know exactly what it is yet but I don’t trust her. I don’t think Negan’s story is over just yet either. I have this feeling he may even play the hero at some point but one thing I’ve learned about TWD over the years, I usually never predict correctly what’s going to happen.

mheasley1011, I was thinking that they would need Negan in some way & people would think he’s been rehabilitated… then he would take advantage & take revenge.
But I can’t predict this comic worth a damn… it sure gives my imagination a workout!
I might get flak for this but I have to be honest & say I’m more eager to see a return of Dwight than Michonne… unless Michonne has made a dark turn!

I’m pretty sure Carl will meet his end soon 🙁 he said the hat made him so lucky and got him out of dangerous situations and now he has given it away. I think for sure this is foreshadowing that Gregory and his new found friends are for sure going to be successful in killing Carl.

I’d like to think the last thing Gregory sees is Jesus’s katana protruding out the front of his intestinal wall. Its no less than he deserves.
