And hey how about that page of Carl where he [SPOILER-CENSORED]!!!!

UPDATE: Our favorite comment was from Tonnie2NA, who brought up an interesting theory about Lydia and the Woodbury survivors.

I am pretty sure that Gregory is the mastermind behind the Whisperers. It is the only thing that would make sense at this point.

In all seriousness, though, I hope Carl does not have a love quadrilateral (?) with Anna, Sophia and Lydia, cause that would be odd… And on the first page where it showed Lydia, I didn’t even know who I was looking at… I do like her character though. She was a rather morbid sixteen year old (so she would fit pretty well into some of today’s youth)

Unrelated, but I thought I should share with you: I saw an Amazon review for someone who bought Compendium One for their 11 year old grandson, and before letting them read it, they took a permanent marker to every single swear word. It made my heart hurt. They ruined it… πŸ™ (Keep in mind, they didn’t censor the Michonne/Governor stuff, just the profanity. Just don’t let your 11 year old read this in the first place)

    • Neutral-Grey December 10, 2014 at 12:39 pm - Reply

Yeah, what the actual fuck. Violent beheadings and executions are fine but swear words? CAN’T LET KIDS HEAR THAT. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that grandmother was actually just an AMC rep making fake reviews to justify the line “screwing with the wrong people.” (I’ll never that one go.)

But seriously. How about you just not get your 11 year old that.

    • jmoore711b December 10, 2014 at 8:00 pm - Reply

I always get annoyed when I see those youtube videos where little kids ask questions at con panels. I don’t want to sound judgmental because I know different parents have different ideas about what is appropriate for kids. But in a world where teenagers can become mass killers, it is something to think about.

      • revan772 December 10, 2014 at 9:34 pm - Reply

Adults become killers too. πŸ˜› Video games, comics, and this kinda stuff is not what turns people into killers. (Mostly.) If someone is immature enough to not be able to handle this stuff, they should not get into it. However, most people, even kids and teenagers, can handle it. I have been into The Walking Dead since 14 years old.

      • ronnyhaze December 10, 2014 at 9:49 pm - Reply

What is hilarious is i just seen one of those videos at a convention and Robert Kirkman was being asked a question about the tv show and the girl asked something like why don’t ppl have more sex or masturbate more often and you hear one women yell out, hey, there are kids here…. I was like… why the hell did you bring kids if you don’t want them hearing adult shit?

      • carlyyougoonie December 12, 2014 at 12:08 pm - Reply

I’ve been at pannels where a small child (and I’m not talking teenager) will ask one of the TWD actors a question and the actors will say every time “Oh my god, you should not be watching this show, but thank you.”

Can’t even escape white trash in the zombie apocalypse. There’s no hope!!!

And look at Carl, fu**edy fuc*. He’s the spitting image of Negan now! That’ll teach those fuc*wads.

Is it just me, or does Lydia have a striking resemblance to Beth. I mean, that’s the first thing I thought when they revealed her. It is even more coincidental being the first issue after the mid-season finale. I would like to think of this as a tribute.

  4. BASTET. December 10, 2014 at 7:41 am - Reply

Carl didn’t kill ’em?! Whaaat?!! Eyeball nearly popped out, tho! That would’ve been sweet, coming from Carl! I was proud of the way he stood up for himself & Sophia & it hurts to see him locked away! Lydia is a beauty… I wonder how much trouble she’s gonna be–between befriending Carl & being a young one held hostage. I just KNEW Gregory was gonna show up & start feeding these bumpkins bad ideas! Troubling times a comin’! Hilltop’s gonna need a RICK GRIMES!

40 million and 5 years to call it torture!

  6. ronnyhaze December 10, 2014 at 9:02 am - Reply

NOT WHAT I EXPECTED AT ALL…..(in a good way) I was expecting a travel weary, dirty, rugged & ragged bitch to be under that skin but a not “beautiful young girl” … interesting! I don’t see Gregory being behind the whisperers at all, he is way too much of a pussy and what did he sneak out of the hilltop and create a cult in his spare time. Those are 2 different story lines that might be converging soon!! Good stuff!!

  7. spacemonkey8 December 10, 2014 at 9:03 am - Reply

I can’t wait for a Carl and Lydia bloody 2-pack of Walking Dead figures to come out, hopefully in the near future. Do you know how hard it is to find a toy with my name? (Lydia, not Carl.)

Gregory is still a little bitch. He needs to be slapped around a bit.

  9. ryan_finn December 10, 2014 at 11:46 am - Reply

Very unexpected reveal with the masked walker and it almost seemed like Carl was getting off scott-free until the weekly-rate motel occupants made their appearance. Gregory has them riled up but I feel like Maggie won’t go down easily. As far as Carl & Lydia, I guess we’ll have to wait & see whether or not her walker ideology rubs off on him. Sophia might be down to join up as well!

Good issue! A few shitstorms are coming soon, damn! That fucktard Gregory aka Captain Useless is like a computer virus that keeps lingering around and reinfecting your PC. Like a virus, I have to keep asking when will he finally be gone for good!! We may find out soon!!! I hope!!!! [As a sidenote, I was surprised (and really mad) after the All Out War arc to see that he was still alive and as creepy as ever. Grrr.] Carl (now known as “Carl Grimes!!!!!!!!”) is an interesting mixture of both adult viciousness in his actions but teenage naivete in his brain sometimes- just check out the “clueless teenager” look on his face when Lydia (don’t trust her one bit!) was asking what his name was and he FUCKING TELLS HER (!). That’s coming to come back to haunt him and the others- just check the evil, conniving smile that Lydia had after she finds it out. I was waiting in the next panel for Lydia to do the whole Dr. Evil evil conquest smile where puts her pinky finger up to her mouth and laughs out loud. The innocent-looking ones are always the wolves and not the sheep, eh, although they might look like a young lamb like Lydia! I think a proper nickname for Lydia would be “White She-Devil” (see the movie Undercover Brother if you don’t get the reference). Perhaps The Whisperers’ mission statement and modus operandi is to try to go from community to community, overrun them and fuck up all the living with their long knives and close-fighting techniques. Hope it doesn’t happen to The Hilltop, although they are much more dysfunctional when compared to Alexandria Safe Zone. But maybe having to defend their home will bring everyone currently bickering at the Hilltop closer together and everyone there will break out into the song “Kumbaya” while holding hands in a circle after they drive out the Whisperers.

OH, man. I really find it interesting the direction Kirkman is taking things.

Throughout this series it’s always been survival, destruction, a little hope, and more death. Now we’re past mere survival. We’ve moved onto civilization. And with civilization came war. And now that the war is over, our characters trying for a utopia where war is not needed. And yet, there lies the interesting dilemma. We’ve reached a point where Rick and the gang wave this message: “NO LONGER DO WE NEED TO KILL OUR ENEMIES. WE’RE PAST THAT.” But then you have people who will zealously defend their own children even if it means they’re ENTIRELY wrong about the situation and people like Gregory who are back-handed slimy little toads (I really fucking hate Gregory right now). And the terrible thing is, with this in mind it’s very easy to actually echo what Gregory said “Why not just kill them?” It makes it SO much easier. Just kill Gregory. Just kill the over zealous parents. Just kill the rotting Negan.

That’s the dilemma. We’re at a point where our villains don’t NEED to die anymore to be removed as a problem, but as they stick around we realize it’s so much easier (frighteningly so) to kill them in the first place. It would make their lives SO much easier… But it goes against everything they’re trying to strive towards.

Also, Carl and Lydia? Interesting. Carl, for a kid with only 3/4 of his face, you’re quite the chick magnet. Must be the confident swagger.

Yea dude as soon as i saw the eye-meeting panel i flipped, and i agree with how conflicting it can be to want to keep baddies alive but it gets harder daily, i personally feel like they might not have come far enough yet to not kill, even though i know thats the ultimate goal and you dress for the job you want right? I know it can be hard to justify killing someone for killing someone but most bad guys in TWD, kid or not, seem to be VERY extreme, sometimes you need to “kill a motherfucker dead”

Ok. Here’s my theory about Michonne:
Michonne is the Whisperer that captured Dante when we first saw them. That Whisperer’s eyes, skin and mouth had such a striking resemblance to Michonne. Rick said “Even after everything… I miss Michonne” I think Michonne had a huge falling out with everyone, like a MASSIVE falling out to the point were she wants them dead. She either found The Whisperers or started The Whisperers. Michonne has always been the greatest survivor, always learning new ways to get past the walkers, like her walker-pets on chains for example. The walker masks are a new way of survival that she may have discovered. Just a theory, as we haven’t seen Michonne yet, and I think there’s a big reason for that!

    • samM December 10, 2014 at 4:34 pm - Reply

Yeah, I thought that walker looked like Michonne also. The funny thing is, we can’t tell if it was a woman’s voice or not, because we were just reading a speech bubble on a page.

    • Mako_Shark December 13, 2014 at 5:13 pm - Reply

OK. If you know that you can remove the arms and jaws of a few of the dead, and walk with them and be safe, at what point do you peel them and make a make a face mask and a jump suit.

I do not think Michonne has gone that far off the deep-end, especially because she has the option of a walled community or two.

Wasn’t expexcting a pretty girl to be under the mask.

I predict that the majority of the hilltoppers will side with Gregory and the parents of the year (because they’re mostly made up of little spoiled punks that have been living behind a wall in fear and having everything provided for them for the majority of the apocalypse) and I see Carl, Maggie and Sophia (and anyone who supports their side) narrowly escaping an angry mob of ignorant villagers and return to ASZ leading to a civil war… and at the most heated point of battle… enter the Whisperers (and/or a recently freed Negan)

  21. SpaceKicker December 10, 2014 at 6:02 pm - Reply

“You fucking fuckwads can go fuck yourselves”… Oh crap, I think I know where that’s going.. Carl is getting step by step closer to becoming a mini Negan. And that smile Lydia gave him… That makes me even more convinced Carl is not the good guy anymore

  22. Kryss December 10, 2014 at 6:16 pm - Reply

So when the whisperer’s attack the hilltop, and carl has to choose to save sophia or maggie which does he choose?

  23. jmoore711b December 10, 2014 at 8:14 pm - Reply

Oh man, Kirkman is feeding the Carl-is-becoming-Negan crowd. Negan isn’t the only one who uses the f-word. Everyone except maybe Gabriel has used it. Of course Carl cursed. The situation is bullshit. I can see that they are trying to make little parallels but I don’t think Negan brainwashed Carl or anything. That would be silly. Carl killed people before Negan came along. I guess this stirs me up because Kirkman has been developing the “what does this world do to children” theme all along so saying its all about Negan kind of diminishes the larger story. This is just part of Carl’s development.
Moving on… I liked the part of the story where the sixteen year old girl smiles because Carl is talking to her. It’s awesome to think that a sixteen year old girl who wears the flesh of dead people in the zombie apocalypse can still flirt. But what I didn’t like was that somehow someone is still listening to Spencer 2’s bullshit reasoning. Let him start something. Rick will finish it.

Im freaking over this issue, so first i wasnt expecting beth either hahaha, but for real i was shocked as piss for that surprise, and i love the whisperers so to know they actually believe theyre as hardcore as they look is mind blowing, im so ready for more and i cannot wait for this to escalate

Fear the Whisperers. Cannot wait to see the rest of the arc unfold. I’m particularly excited to see what Maggie needed to tell Jesus. My guess is that she already has a little bit of Intel on the Whisperers. Maybe it’s a long-shot, but Michonne? Who knows. Love the open ending with Lydia and Carl. Maybe Lydia let herself get captured in search of The Hilltop/Carl.

  26. revan772 December 10, 2014 at 9:36 pm - Reply

Great issue! Carl is my absolute favourite character. This was awesome, but kinda upset at Maggie for punishing Carl. He could have killed those kids but he obviously stopped before actually killing them. Carl is a hero.

Lydia is cool, and liking Sophia more. Gregory though… he needs to look at the flowers.

Looks like Negan rubbed off on carl. “Fucking Fuckwads” UH OH, I see trouble coming from Carl in the future.

  28. Tonnie2NA December 10, 2014 at 10:46 pm - Reply

This is bull fucking shit. Did everybody forget how fucking stupid Gregory is. I mean seriously. In this new world where they are not trying to kill why not just speak up, tell Maggie that they want an election or something. Like she explained very concisely to Carl, killing people benefits nobody in their new world. If little Hershel is left as an orphan then I have no sympathy for anybody in Hilltop. Let the Whispers feast like thanksgiving day.
As for Carl, he’s pretty much gone. I think he definitely needs to be locked up, killing ben was a pretty big indicator of that, and his brutality and thirst for blood seems to have remained through the years. He might make a good Whisperer though, Lydia seems mighty keen. Really excited to see what happens with there.
    Screw Greggory

  30. arethehorsesinthestable December 11, 2014 at 7:03 am - Reply

Another thing about the issue- it was interesting to see the basement/catacombs of the Hilltop. What the hell was that place before the apocalypse? In some panels it looks like there used to be a wine cellar in the basement so maybe it was some hoity-toity “mansion estate on top of the hill” for some rich family? When “Carl Grimes!!!!!!!” and Lydia are locked up in the makeshift holding cells, the cells almost look like barn stalls like horses used to be kept there. Which would give even more ironic relevance to Jesus saying a few issues ago “ARE THE HORSES IN THE STABLE??!!” because, yes Jesus, the Wyld Stallyns known as Lydia and Carl are indeed in the stable!!

Carl went Negan Jr. on those redneck parents lol! I can’t wait to see more of the Carl and Lydia interaction. In my opinion the boys got what they deserved and I think Maggie should just send the family of the boys away…or kill them, both will work. πŸ˜‰

I know there has been some talk as to who the new antagonist will be and that it was rumored to be a woman. I have read some theories that this group of whisperers is actually Lilly Caul and the Woodbury remnants. The only reason I mention this is the fact that I was searching around and found out that there was a little girl named Lydia Bingham in the Woodbury novels. She was blond and came into contact with Caul. Her status is unknown. The only inconsistency is her age, there is about a two year discrepancy. But ultimately the time frame is unknown, and after the jump this Lydia from the novels would be a teenager just like ms whisperer. Just a thought…

    • Chase December 11, 2014 at 3:31 pm - Reply

Wait how is that even possible that Lilly and her group are Whispers? Btw I’m not trying to be mean here, but I’m just curious about this topic.

      • Tonnie2NA December 11, 2014 at 5:04 pm - Reply

It’s not inconceivable that other people in the US thought that DC would be safe, some of which may have come through woodbury. And it is not inconceivable that either Lily or her people may hold some resentment towards Rick. Now it’s possible they followed Rick’s crew or it’s by chance, but certainly in the realm of “reality”

    • BASTET. December 11, 2014 at 6:17 pm - Reply

Interesting! A Whisperer did tell Dante that he entered their land & killed their people, so I was thinking along the lines of The Hunters. I’d certainly consider Lilly & Woodbury…at least someone they’ve encountered before. I’d wanna do some research to try to nail down the times since Lydia Bingham was 9. Lilly Caul reappearing in the comic would be totally awesome!

      • Chase December 11, 2014 at 7:56 pm - Reply

About the Lyida Character isn’t that same person who was with Lilly and the people from Woodbury in the novel “Descent” if so, what will she planning to do with Carl since she have that evil smile on her face?

    1. I find it really interesting that in this issue we’re shown an outsider who you’d presume to be hideous that is actually gorgeous (at least physically) – and we see insiders who we’d presume to be level-headed as part of these communities who are actually morons. This was probably one of Kirkman’s moves to keep the world feeling realistic. Not all the “beautiful” people are part of these “civilized” communities. And not all these people in these civilized communities are well.. civilized.

    2. That smirk on Lydia’s face in the last panel of her and Carl speaking.. DON’T FOLLOW THE SIRENS, CARL!

    3. I feel like if Gregory and his scum actually attempt to follow through with killing Maggie, something will go horribly wrong. I could see Sophia somehow being threatened or killed instead… then maybe Carl will take a bite out of Gregory’s neck. Like father like son. <3

    4. RE: Maggie putting Carl in a cell. She's trying to protect him from anybody looking for revenge. End of story. I could see someone trying to get revenge on Sophia too though..

    5. I don't see Negan escaping anytime soon. I think it'd actually be wise to go without showing/mentioning him and then springing him in the right, chaotic moment. The way I see it, he would need help though.. maybe someone will pay him a visit.

    6. I reeeeeeeally hope Michonne hasn't gone to the dark side. *shrug* I know Kirkman hinted at the next major villain being a woman we've already seen, but maybe he knew we'd be wondering where Michonne is at this point and just wanted to toy with us???? I *might* be in denial, but we'll all have to wait and see…

    • Tonnie2NA December 11, 2014 at 5:22 pm - Reply

While I definitely see a heavy Michonne influence in the como used by the whisperers, it seems inconceivable that she could have broken off and founded a new crew who (from what we hear from Lydia about the concept of childhood) has their own ingrained ideologies about the new world. I really can’t think of a ton of female’s that we’ve been introduced to that could be it. But I have a feeling it has to do with that chick who stabbed Eric and stole Buttons. This happened right during the story arc “No Way Out,” which is now seeming somewhat suspicious to me. Did this chick have a problem with Alexandria? Did she have something to do with bringing a horde so close to their gates? The Whisperers were talking about how their people have been killed, and Lydia made it seem like the Whisperers consider the dead to be a part of the team. Very confusing and interesting stuff

Predicting the next issue will start with the jerk parents shooting down Gregory’s plan, but hoping not. I want some stuff to go down. Alright, Carl, you’ve:

Strung together f-bombs like a seasoned professional
So your next step naturally must be:
Make a harem of wives out of Sophia, Lydia and Anna. πŸ˜‰

    My rambling 002…
White trash parents are annoying. Ugh. They’re like the classic ‘my kids are angels and can do no wrong and everyone else is at fault.’ Yuck. Glad Carl told them where to stick it (Negan-style even) but things are certainly not going to fare well for him. πŸ™ Or Maggie. And who knows what Rick’s reaction is going to be.
Gregory’s last line made me literally scream. Heh. I do wonder if the next issue will open with him saying ‘I’m just kidding, seriously, I’m not a murderer!’ or the trailer trash will be like ‘Dude NO, are you kidding me?!’
I had the biggest giddy grin on my face at Carl’s f-bombs…oh gosh, I can just see Negan wiping his eyes with pride. Heh.
Lydia was a total surprise…at first I was like ‘uhhh….who is that?’ I agree with one commenter who said she looks a bit like Beth. I thought that too. I have a feeling she’s very intelligent under that dead-eyed exterior. Also, I’m not sure about that smile of hers…I found it really sinister but maybe it’s just my distrust of any strangers in TWD. It could’ve been totally innocent, but… :/
Ugh, cannot wait for the next issue, and those new cover previews have me drooling too.

  43. harpo.AF December 12, 2014 at 7:13 pm - Reply

Eh, more ramblings. Thought I’d put them separate.
Now, Kirkman had the obscure little comment in one Letter Hacks to the tune of ‘wouldn’t it surprise people if Negan never got out of jail?’ and of course we’re all wondering how Negan will play into the future storylines. Well… maybe he WON’T get out of jail. Maybe his play in the future storylines is through his influence in Carl. His legacy…
He never had a kid of his own, but now he essentially does. Whatever influences he’s had on Carl over the past 2 1/2 – 3 years… they’re going to kick in, they’re going to be extremely important to Carl’s future, and even the future of the world. I personally see Carl as the John Connor or Neo of TWD. He’s the future of the new world…. the face of the new empire. And whoever influences him… Rick, Negan, Earl, Sophia… everyone…they play a part in what this new world is going to be. So maybe that’s why, story-wise, Negan was kept alive… so he could help shape Carl into the man he’ll be…now, I don’t particularly think that man is going to be ‘bad’. I don’t think Carl is a mini-Negan…will he have some of his traits, sure. He already DID have some of his traits anyway. And all of Neg’s traits aren’t necessarily bad…he just used them for bad things. He had leadership skills, charisma, intelligence, perception, and humor, but of course he used those positive traits for ill. Now if Carl uses them for good…

Looks like I’m late to the party… Fashionably late! This issue was great! Charlie’s art was top notch and Gregory is becoming more of an asshole than I could ever imagine! Carl is starting to become ruthless and more like Negan and who the hell could these Whisperers be? They seem like they are some pretty f**ked up people if you ask me. I cannot wait until Gregory gets his but handed to him! He deserves it.
