The Walking Dead 129 Discussion

Issue 129 is just hours away from releasing! Once you have it, this is the place to talk about it! The preview tag was: “Even now, they still find new ways to dispose of the dead.”

Read the issue, mull everything over, and come back here to discuss the issue. If you bring the best comment we’re going to give you a signed San Diego Comic-Con variant cover of 129 (so you’ll have to give us a bit to mail it out)!

I’ll be back tomorrow with some thoughts of my own…

Ok so it’s Wednesday. Here’s my big thing with this issue: is Rick on a power trip or was he legitimately lashing out because the thought of losing that road scares the crap out of him? He IS giving that guy a second chance but man, he went full asshole for a minute there.

And is this the dumpiest unicorn you’ve ever seen?
It’s like some kind of dachshund/unicorn hybrid. I feel like it might have played out more like this:

UPDATE: Hey guys, I know that we took our sweet time picking a winner for this discussion (aka: we got swamped by SDCC) but after looking through the comments, we’ve gotta give it to JW Coombs for whipping up those awesome comparisons! Congrats!

PLEASE go back to the way it was. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t HATE the new art style, but I liked the gray tones better before AOW and I like the cover style (i.e. The title and colors) before AOW. I liked EVERYTHING pre-All Out War. Please go back to the original 🙂

I understand why Rick did it, but keeping Negan alive is so going to bite them in the ass. You can see the impending graves from here.

Ho-lee Shit. Rick went BERSERK on Benjamin there. My god. Negan, oh, you little shitster. Damn, Anna is a Magna (Not MAGDA) Mini-me! Alex is still alive? Damn, I was hoping for a Aasus or Jeron relationship… Oh, yeah, Ken should change his name to Polo….. geddit?

Little known fact the zombie reaching out on the cover is actually Lori and she’s reaching out to Rick to remind him of his past mistakes tell his dumb ass to kill negan before this happens to andrea

    • Gravelord July 9, 2014 at 11:12 am - Reply

It’s Rick the prick’s fault for not telling her there is an extremely dangerous prisoner in the jail. If anyone is to blame, it is him.

    • Bastet July 9, 2014 at 1:43 pm - Reply

I don’t think she was being stupid. She’s obviously smart enough to know not to take everything at face value.

      • Stuart O July 10, 2014 at 5:41 am - Reply

I would be surprised if Magna let Negan out without confronting Rick, its not like Rick was hiding Negan, he told her about a “lifer” and that he would explain when he got back.

        • Bastet July 10, 2014 at 5:51 am - Reply

I’m just surprised at all the comments about Magna’s stupidity when she’s doing what Rick did when he first came along to Alexandria. Are we trying to say Rick was stupid, too? I think Rick was smart as hell for what he did & that Magna seems just as smart. Now, how humanitarian she’ll be towards Negan remains to be seen, but you and I both know that it could go down exactly as you just stated….. and then again, maybe not.

          • Stuart O July 10, 2014 at 5:55 am

Yep, anything could happen, Magna seams smart to me, the snooping trying to work out if the place is safe for her people, these are all smart moves, if she lets Negan out with speaking to anyone, and I mean anyone, doesn’t have to be Rick, most people will be able to tell her Negan’s story, then that would not be a smart move.

          • Bastet July 10, 2014 at 6:08 am

Totally agree there! And that begs the question: Why would she have to learn if she could trust Rick but offer that trust to Negan immediately? Na….I don’t think Magna’s stupid like that!

          • Stuart O July 10, 2014 at 6:27 am

Exactly! to say that she wont trust Rick until she has tried to find out all his secrets and then she is just going to instantly trust Negan, just on his say so? come on! I would have issues with a story that did that.

          • Bastet July 10, 2014 at 6:31 am

With that being said, she best not have Luke pick that lock! Then I’d be hitting Letter Hacks up with a definite printable one!

          • Stuart O July 10, 2014 at 6:46 am

Well we are team opposite!!! lol

          • Cassi July 11, 2014 at 7:39 pm

It’s gonna be interesting to see what form of manipulation Negan uses on her. Any way it goes I’ll be surprised if she goes for it unless there is some direct benefit to her and her people.

          • Bastet July 12, 2014 at 6:36 am

Rick’s gotta earn her trust. I think a man behind bars has to do the same. If anything, she’s gonna cause a rift with the hotheaded Rick by getting Luke to pick the lock to the jailhouse. Then she’ll have to decide who’s telling the truth between Negan and Rick (if she’s smart, she’ll talk to others & go with the majority).

          • Jason Thomas July 10, 2014 at 7:42 am

True !! I don’t think she will trust Negan either.

          • Seanem44 July 10, 2014 at 11:29 am

Yeah…. I bet first couple of pages will be her looking at Negan like, whatever. I’m not letting you out. People are writing her off too quick, but I think she is going to evolve as one of the new Heroins.

          • Stuart O July 11, 2014 at 12:40 am

it wouldn’t make sense or fit her character from what we have seen so far. you cast your vote in the dead cup yet?

          • hobbs July 12, 2014 at 6:34 am

Its just that the plot seems so predictable, magna lets negan out, negan regains power, all out war part deux. We’re all just mad at kirkman for the shotty worksmanship , especially at one episode a month. He could have interns writing this gargage……………. maybe he is, maybe he’s on vacation.

          • hobbs July 12, 2014 at 6:36 am

matter of fact, if that is the plot, then I might stop reading this comic. Cuz when the plot runs dry, its over. and…. admit it everyone, these last 3 or 4 issues have sucked.

          • Bastet July 12, 2014 at 6:57 am

Read posts on this thread by “Neutral Grey”. I share those ideas about this new arc. IMO, this makes for EXCELLENT writing because it’s realism at its finest, even tho it’s in an unreal apocalypse.

          • Bastet July 12, 2014 at 6:46 am

We don’t know that Magna’s gonna let Negan out, tho. Why would she immediately trust Negan if she is still trying to figure out if she can trust Rick? If she just immediately springs him from jail, then yes, I would have a problem with that writing! It could be that she’ll confront someone in the community (Andrea), causing heat, & when Rick gets back, she’ll confront him, too. Rick’s hotheaded, so he’ll go off on her for getting Luke to break into the jailhouse. Could be the next major battle is not between good & evil but good & good. Meanwhile, she could go back & forth between Rick & Negan to try and decipher who’s worthy of trust. I still think about Carl being the one who lets Negan out. This is just one way it could possibly go. If you’re able to predict this comic, my hat’s off to ya!!

            Garbage? HELL NO!

          • Jeremy July 17, 2014 at 9:02 pm

She is a stupid, if you go to a community WHO SAVED YOUR ASS, and the person in charge told you “WE HAVE ONE PRISONER”, for you to spit on the people who saved you, and yo stick your nose in business in which it does not belong, you ar e stupid.

    • Carly Hudson July 16, 2014 at 5:52 pm - Reply

Magna doesn’t seem like a girl who plays. She may just put Negan down like the rabid animal he is.

Also, you don’t become the leader of a group by making stupid decisions. She’s going to think this one through.

Rick’s really settling into his role as angry old man/ poop cleaner well.

  12. Seanem44 July 9, 2014 at 8:16 am - Reply

Rick and Negan are more similar than most would like to admit at this point. Or at least that’s now how I feel after reading this issue. To phrase Belloq from Indiana Jones, He is a shadowy reflection of Negan. I was shocked to see Rick beat poor Benjamin down. Yes, he had a point in the importance of the road, but jeez. I’m sure Negan started off in a similar way. And about people killing for those positions… he made it sound very literal. What else is going on in the utopia he has created. And despite all he has done, he leaves strangers in an area with a hardened murderer? Really? I am starting to agree with Magna. Things aren’t adding up. Something deeper is going on here. I loved Rick’s “I neutered you” statement to Negan though.

I think Magna’s group will be like Rick’s group when they first came to Woodbury

  14. kickinwing420 July 9, 2014 at 8:36 am - Reply

too bad i cant read it for a few months because you assholes keep taking down any youtube channels that put up free issues. seriously, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with letting some people read the issue for free on youtube. most of those people will either buy the volume when they come out or wont even buy the comics at all, so whats the point? oh thats right, you gotta have every little dollar you can squeeze out.

it just pisses me off that you guys think people should buy the issues as they come out then buy the volumes too? im only able to read like two comic series cuz its so damn expensive

  15. Seanem44 July 9, 2014 at 8:43 am - Reply

Is Rick the new Governor? It’s starting to look that way. What do you think? I see very eerie similarities, both in the community and how he runs it. It’s not hard to see Magna as Rick entering Woodbury for the first time.

    • Neutral Grey (Jonathon) July 9, 2014 at 1:15 pm - Reply

What? No. He yelled at one guy. He hasn’t cut people’s heads off yet and stuck them in tanks. He hasn’t butchered strangers for just entering his community. He hasn’t made out with the corpse of a little girl or torture raped someone. Guy loses his cool for a minute and he’s the Governor? No, it’s not starting to look that way. No where in that remote field, even.

I’m not particularly a fan of where the comic is at this point in time but I think it’s safe to say things are about to come apart thanks to Magna. I really wish Negan would have killed Rick in the AOW finale but I look forward to Carl breaking out his hat and killing Negan in a few issues.

  20. Eddie July 9, 2014 at 10:33 am - Reply

So… Ok, even though I HATE!!! what Magna and her group are doing, and I know its gonna tear everything apart, I’m trying to understand their position here. They are new to this community and just like Rick and his people tore everything up every time they entered a new community to find out if it was safe and etc. these people are doing the same thing. Of course they are gonna think Rick and his people are phsycos and its because they don’t know what Negan has done, and because he has this ultimate convincing power they are going to believe he is an “innocent” hostage and not a phsycopath that kills people with bats covered in wire. And of course they haven’t seen the things we’ve seen as the readers so they don’t know what their doing… If you read this… thanks for your time

    • Chris Jamieson July 9, 2014 at 1:19 pm - Reply

I knew it was coming, this whole issue lead up to the last panel, and the whole while I knew it was coming. All I could say at the end of the comic was oh no oh no oh no. And now we wait a month until we see what chaos ensues. Who knows, maybe Magnum(lol had to) and the others wont release him and theyll wait for Rick to be there. Knowing Kirkman theres always the possibility of a troll.

      • Eddie Morales July 9, 2014 at 2:49 pm - Reply

Yes… I was saying the same thing at the end!!!!!! I almost died… but even though I got mad as hell I looked at the situation and thought that Rick would have done the same thing… but like @Neutral Grey (Jonathon) said….”Doesn’t mean I have to bloody like it!” And btw nice one with Magnum XD

    • Neutral Grey (Jonathon) July 9, 2014 at 1:22 pm - Reply

It infuriates me… But I think Rick would have done the very same in that position. Doesn’t mean I have to bloody like it, though. I have been with Rick throughout this entire journey, Magna just showed up poking her nose where it doesn’t belong.

      • Eddie Morales July 9, 2014 at 2:43 pm - Reply

Exactly… Tremendous point my friend… she is new and she is a poker and that bugs the hell out of me… If she only knew the kind of man Negan was!!!!!!! But sadly we will have to wait an entire month to see if what were saying will happen 🙁

    • Jeremy July 17, 2014 at 9:05 pm - Reply

I’m sorry, but that is some idiotic logic. If a group of people SAVED MY ASS, and the leader of the people SAID THEY HAVE ONE PRISONER, why the hell would you think these people are psychos? For this dumb bitch to stick her nose into the business when she knows NOTHING about it, is sheer stupidity.

  21. Thiala Mathis July 9, 2014 at 10:46 am - Reply

I thought it was a decent issue. Hopefully we will atleast get to see the Hill Top and Maggie in the next issue. I wonder what Negan’s plan of attack is going to be when he gets out of jail?

  22. Allfather88 July 9, 2014 at 10:54 am - Reply

OK. Awesome chapter. A few thoughts: Magna’s suspicious nature seems unfounded and awkward. I think that Kirkman forced this a bit to move the story along. Next, Rick reaming out Ben was hilarious and a nice break from his peaceful state. I, for one, like the crazy frantic Rick. Last, just because they found Negan doesn’t mean they can get him out. Its not that easy to pick prison cell locks. I see him getting out, but they’ll probably just escape initially (like Rick and Michonne from the Governor at first). Great chapter!

  23. Buffalowned July 9, 2014 at 11:22 am - Reply

Negan would be an amazing child molester, he’d be all like “Help! I’ve lost my fucken dog and I can’t live without him come get in my van so we can find him!” Then people die and Negan gets what he always wanted. (the 5 year old girls)

Rick has fully evolved into the Ricktator. Not to say his points weren’t valid, but his level of control and the delivery of his yelling puts him into the situation we’ve joked about for years. This literally isn’t a democracy anymore. It’s a Ricktatorship.

I don’t think Negan wants to kill anyone at this point… he wants to steal what Rick has built. If anything, I could see him trying to seize control from Rick, and then imprison him for life.

Ok.. Negan thoughts, um he looked hot on that full page, I think the beard is um..growing on me? In regards to Magna and crew, I think
1 Rick told someone to keep on eye on the jail. Maybe he wants to see if they will be nosy. 2. Whoever was coming to clean Neg’s poo bucket is gonna catch them. 3 Negan excitedly tells Luke he ‘used to have a vest just fucking like that’; the two become bffs for life.
Negan’s ‘save meeee’ face made me laugh XD since he’s locked up, how does he know Magna and crew are new? I bet whenever someone he doesn’t recognize comes down the stairs he pulls the same trick. :p

  35. Brandon Breaks July 9, 2014 at 5:39 pm - Reply

Great issue. My question is that even if Negan escapes, wouldn’t it be an almost impossible task to takeover w/out help? Even if Magna & her crew help him, it seems like a tall task. It is Kirkman though, so I guess it’s possible that Negan & Magna could get to the armory. I think Negan escaping makes sense, & even killing a few people on the way out(like Andrea). I also think it’s starting to seem that Rick has lost his ability to lead correctly or even be a valuable fighter. I hate to say that, but this issue made him seem like a feeble, grumpy old man. I’m wondering if Jesus will be the new man in charge of Rick’s crew. In any case, if Rick &/or Andrea dies at the hands of Negan & or Magna, I see Carl dedicating himself to vengeance. That hints at Negan &/or Magna being around for awhile.

    • Bastet July 9, 2014 at 5:59 pm - Reply

I’m surprised that you think this issue made Rick seem like a feeble, grumpy old man. If anything, the past two issues made him look feeble but this issue restored my faith that he still has badass coursing all through his veins!

      • Cassi July 9, 2014 at 7:29 pm - Reply

Totally agree with that! I believe in Rick Grimes! In fact this issue made up my mind to vote for him in the final Dead Cup showdown! TEAM RICK!

Don’t get me wrong, I love Rick Grimes. I want him to live, & wish he would forever be the main character in The Walking Dead. However, I just felt like him beating a guy w/ his cane seemed a little “old-man” style. I agree, he seemed weaker in the last few issues, but only because he didn’t have much to do, other than greeting new people, being strangely secretive, & still having trouble w/ Carl.

  36. Soleydi Cuevas July 9, 2014 at 5:52 pm - Reply

First off, Rick has to kill Negan before Negan kills him and his people. I understand that Rick is trying to get society back on track but because of everything Negan did in the past, he does not deserve to live. Negan is already letting Rick know that he will find a way out and get his revenge. Obvoiusly imprisoning Negan isn’t cutting it. Doesn’t look like he’s learned much other than dropping the F bomb less. It’s looking like that time will be coming sooner then later. Secondly, I am super pissed on how Magna and her group are snooping around the camp. Why can’t they just except that this is a safe place. Everybody has worked so hard and many have died inorder to keep their camp safe. She kind of reminds me of a younger Rick when he first got to Alexandria. He fucked shit up too!! I REALLY hope they aren’t dumb enough to let Negan out. If Magna and her group do release Negan without asking anyone the reasons why he is being incarcerated , I hope Negan kills her first for being dumb and gullible. I’m looking foward to issue 130. Lets hope my productions aren’t true and Negan doesnt get out in the next couple of issues. P.S. I love this comic book and you all have done a great job with it. Keep up the good work and please don’t let me down 🙂

At first I felt bad for Benjamin but then I thought THAT is the Rick Grimes that will find the strength to hunt down and bury Negan when his psycho ass busts out and comes for revenge. So great to see the down and dirty dog is still hiding inside that neatly groomed father of the new world!

About half way through #128 I predicted the end of this issue but that didn’t stop me letting out a massive, anime-style “ooooooooooh” at the last frame. I get the distinct feeling that if Andrea or Carl don’t die because of this then it is going to be Rick. George R. R. Martin ain’t got nothin’ on Robert Kirkman.

How do you think he’ll be? You think we’ll see a change for the better….that he’s reformed?

      • D. Ryan Blunt July 10, 2014 at 4:49 am - Reply

No, more than likely not reformed, maybe just less “Neganny”. This issue did make me think, in our “normal” world we still have the crazies and f-ed up people who ignore logic and reason, so of course they’re here too. It would be a weak story if he just went back to being same old Negan, and I shudder to think who could “worse than Negan” be? I just don’t see them going that route. I also hope Magna and crew are more than the get Negan out of jail pawns. I can see him becoming the adversary again, but how, and make it good at the same time? That’s my question.

        • Bastet July 10, 2014 at 6:09 am - Reply

I see exactly what you mean & I agree with you! That’s why, when 127 came out, I was thinking about Carl going rogue & the story THAT would bring! I was thinking that Carl could be the cause of Rick’s death, eventually. I don’t see Negan lasting all that long….I see his story phasing out with whatever Magna brings. His demise would give rise to another adversary, whether that would be Magna, Carl, or someone else. After all, he’s had his story, so what more can he do but help bring about some other major chain of events that won’t necessarily be all about him?

But I can’t predict this comic worth a damn. I can only let my imagination run wild & then be totally delighted when it all goes down so differently!

Daamn, Rick! I knew Rick was the new Douglas and was going to end up beating somebody’s ass (just like when Douglas freaked out at the mention of Davidson),but SHIT!!! Rick is getting old and losing patience with people I suppose, along with struggling to fight off the walkers. I guess it is time for Carl to finally step up as leader soon. I think Carl is going to The Hilltop for Sophia and not just to become a blacksmith, he didn’t seem that interested in Anna. I’m interested to see where the two horsemen are going to tie into to this they look like they were from The Kingdom, but why focus on them? Is there something important about what they were doing? What is going on with Ezekiel, Michonne, Maggie and Dwight? I loved the interaction with Rick and Negan, it had a Batman and The Joker like feel to it. DAT ENDING…that everyone saw coming.

    Don’t stop cursing, Negan, 😛

I am really enjoying these issues. Don’t love Rick with the old man look and beard but I know that will change.

Negan may get out if that Manga girl is an “Ex-girlfriend”…That would sure change some things.

I look forward to Carl becoming a “man” in the next few issues!

I love TWD, Kirkman and co. are killing it. Keep up the great work!!!!

I think Rick lashing out at Benji may have something to do with an eternal struggle and a bruised ego. The scene with him and Carl was obviously a nod back to #49 after the prison fell. But this time; Rick knew he needed they help whether he wanted it or not. Carl did the right thing and he knew it; so he couldn’t be mad with him for his own shortcomings. Then along comes Benjamin, the man responsible for keeping this road walker free, who was conveniently nowhere to be found when they were attacked. As the young man on horseback approaches, Rick sees the perfect target for all of his frustration, anger, and embarrassment.

Yeah, Rick is just dealing with a lot of feelings right now. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him talking to Carl on the phone soon…

    • AMF July 11, 2014 at 12:50 pm - Reply

I agree. I also think Rick has a lot of fear inside him. He knows how hard they worked to gain their foothold on a new civilization. And he knows how tenous it all is; all it would take is the walkers getting out of control, a natural disaster, or just a general attitude of complacency among the people to bring all they have crashing down. He doesn’t want people to live in fear but he also doesn’t want them to forget how important it is to stay alert and prepared. So because of his fear, in combination with all you said, he might lash out a bit more fiercely than expected.

Ok, so maybe I’m just seeing things, but wasn’t that a horde of about 10 million walkers at the end? It could have been trees/bushes, but it looked like walkers as far as the eye can see, and who knows which way they are headed. Obviously they are in proximity to the communities, and I can’t imagine that they’ll be able to steer the herd away effectively. Also, is Ken blind/deaf? Why is he asking what Marco is hearing?

With that out of the way:
    Rick: You are still a badass, especially with the hook hand and cane. Keep those fools in check!;
Carl: I think it’s time to find a new hobby… because your unicorn looks like it has gout.
    Anna: You snooze, you lose, girl;
    Benjamin: Straighten up and fly right, or the next mistake may be your last;
    Marco: When being pursued by a sea of walkers, maybe try to hang on to the horse;
    Magna: I like you right now… please don’t screw that up;
Negan: Show us why the caged bird sings!

Can’t wait for the next episode when Negan starts his manipulation of the new group. Magna is already suspicious of the community, and Negan is quite adept at feeding peoples insecurities and fears. That, and he’s been locked up for two years… which is plenty of time to plan for a possible event like his introduction to Magna and her group.

So, all in all a good issue in my opinion. After reading this, I feel like I’m pretty on track with this arcs direction and where it may lead.

That being said; I think we all pretty much saw it coming with Magna snooping around. After all; it is the smart thing to do when you aim to protect your people, that’s why Rick did it as well during his first few skeptical days at ASZ. So, I’m not too awfully made at her for nosing around. What matters is the moment of truth she will face in the next issue. What determines her character for me if how she handles Negan. Does she buy it hook, line and sinker? Does she remain skeptical as a savvy survivor should, never taking anything at face value? Does she free him? Or does she wait to confront Rick like a good person would; after all every story has three sides–his, hers, and the truth. We’ll find out soon enough, but I think we can all agree that have she moves forward from here will be one of her most defining moments; and will affect the fate of many people besides herself and I don’t think she truly realizes this yet.

As for Negan, it’s no big surprise that his colors have changed a bit. I think we all had a feeling he was just biding time, trying to make his incarceration a little easier on himself by cooperating a little. But he confirmed our suspicions with the lashing out of his true nature in this issue. I think Rick brings that out in him though; although he thinks he’s being cunning and intimidating, his lack of self control when Rick is around is pathetic and laughable. He can’t help himself but to hurl insults and try to assert his dominance, even from behind bars. And although he’s still the same sadistic son of a b*tch, he does seem a bit “neutered” or toned down, like Rick had commented. I’d imagine losing everything(including his precious fear-driven power and control) and several years of imprisonment have taken quite a bit of fight out of him. I wonder; if and when he gets out, just how physically capable will he be?–Anyway; I was proud to see a little bit of bark left in Rick, it’s good to know he doesn’t waste his time by indulging Negan by taking the bait when he hurls insults and attempts to start petty arguments to get under Rick’s skin. But, alos equally as nice to seem him not cowering and playing the pacifist either; he asserts his dominance and makes sure Negan remembers where he is, how he got there, and makes sure he doesn’t forget that his fate is already determined.(Which seems to take some wind out of his sails).

I really enjoyed the father-son banter while Rick and Carl made their way down the road. It’s nice to see them having such a close bond now. All of the animosities of the past have been settled; and they are genuinely close. They’re fast becoming best-friends over father and son.

Also, to everyone who doubted my main man, Rick MotherF*cking Grimes; suck on this b*tches! The man’s still got it! And although he’s a little stiff and a little out of practice he’s still just as bad as he ever was! Glad to see his trusty hatchet still holds and important place on his belt. Also, I have to mention the moment where Carl finishes the last two walkers, although Rick told him not to. Much like those first moments after the prison fell, Rick takes on the zombies, and not being at his physical peak he falters and begins to lose the upper hand. He tells Carl to stand down, even though things are getting hairy for him. Carl gets nervous, and shoots the remaining walkers dead. But here’s the beauty in this issues redux of this scene, this time Rick doesn’t scold Carl for saving him. He thanks him, and admits that things were getting away from him and he was thankful for his son’s quick-thinking response. He’s acknowledging Carl’s ascent into manhood, it’s a sort of “passing of the torch” in a sense. Very cool if you ask me.

Also, I loved him paying the hard-ass authoritative leader with the slacking-patrolman. Although some may think he was a little out of line; what some don’t realize is that in the eyes of the residents(especially in this case, as the patrolman is a Kingdom resident) Rick isn’t just a man. He is a myth, a legend, a hero amongst men. It was his belief, and hope, and optimistic speeches, and unrelenting strength in the face of adversity that rallied these people to fight for and forge this new future. A legacy they can all share. And not for nothing; but a reputation like this needs to be maintained whether he likes it or not. He needs to keep up his appearance, he is beholden to his people and his people see him as a steadfast warrior leading them triumphantly into the future. It’s him that gave people hope, and keeps them hopeful. He’s their savior, the one thing they can count on, a fixed point in a swirling world of chaos. If Rick begins to falter, and this reputation and perception changes, everything falls down with it. People lose hope, they feel vulnerable, they stop working together and become once again selfish. It would be a whole ill-fated chain reaction. So this behavior from Rick is a necessary evil. I guarantee this man will never again step out of line, and neither will the several other men with whom he shares his harrowing encounter with the legendary Rick Grimes. Fierce discipline is needed in a world so unstable; especially with a job like his. Rick is no exaggerating when stating that the main road is their very life-blood. It is what make’s this safer, civilized life possible. It if the first big step, and piece of the puzzle for rebuilding and reshaping the future. If the roads fall, and succumb to the occupation of the dead; then the communities once again become isolated from one another; islands in a sea of death. All run, missions, and things that require one to venture outside the walls become fatally dangerous again. And the casualty rate begins to sky-rocket. Soon enough the people once again find themselves gripped firmly in the fist of fear. Morale falls, people stop working, they stop thriving and revert to surviving. So I think Rick was totally justified in the way he treated the patrolman.

And finally; those two young dumb clowns who stirred up all this zombie-mess to begin with are still out there; getting deeper into no mans land and only making things worse for themselves and others by leading that herd all over the territory! I can’t wait to see how things turn out with these fools;and I’m still wondering if they voices will be that of Rick and Carl, I’m starting to have doubts.

I thought it was a good issue; it may seem like things have been slow going but I feel like some very cool events are being foreshadowed and set-up perfectly. Also, the highlight of this issues was the redux of the “Carl-saves-struggling-Rick” scene; but this one had a much happier ending and was a perfect way to exhibit profound growth between the two.

  50. JW Coombs July 10, 2014 at 10:23 am - Reply

Something that really caught my eye and interested me this issue was Negan’s back and forth with Rick. More importantly the comment of-“That creaking sound I hear…Is that a windmill? Yeah…I thought so.”-I thought it was cool, just goes to show how capable Negan really is, even after all this time. He may have lost the war, but it barely took a toll on him, and he knows it. I think he’ll definitely use that to his advantage. You know it’s gotta to be eating at Rick knowing that Negan lost the war; but it was Rick who took all the damage and has the battle scars to prove it, a constant reminder of his arch-enemy’s raw power and capability. The one and only thing that is actually keeping Rick safe is that prison cell; and a community-wide hated of Negan. But as time progresses, and generations come and go, people will forget and the wounds Negan opened will have healed. That what really worries me, that Negan still maintains all of his physical prowess(which honestly, always trumped Rick’s). Also, the thing about incarceration is that it actually preserves and improves a mans body and physical status(providing the prison conditions are stable and not third world); because they are no longer abusing their body, no longer fighting or being injured; they can’t abuse substances, and their diet is regulated and healthier. A long prison sentence is sometime like being in a cryo-sleep for 20 years. That’s why a lot of convicts pay their debt to society, and after 20 years of imprisonment; they come out and are the epitome of physical fitness. So if Negan get’s sprung; I think Rick will be in very real, and very grave danger. If Negan seeks him out and corners him, one-on-one, as much as it pains me to say it, Rick won’t stand a chance.

Also, back to the creepy windmill comment; although it was very unsettling, it was very interesting(IMO) to see just how sharp Negan still is, and that he still retains all of his stretegic plotting and deductive reasoning skills. Because if you pay close attention; he confirms the *creaking* sounds as a windmills by investigating the contents of his food sack and discovering freshly baked-bread(which IMO is too much of an apocalyptic luxury to be wasting on inmates).

Lastly, concerning Magna; I don’t think she’s foolish or gullible enough to buy Negan’s line or bullsh*t. I definitely don’t think she would be the one to set him free. Honestly, I think the encounter between Magna and Negan in issues to come is going to be more of an exercise in trust; a plot device to bring her into the fold and show she can truly be trusted. But I don’t hold some of the other members of her group in such high esteem; namely Kelly. He strikes me as the type of man that had things gone differently; and had he been approached with different opportunities; he could very well have wound up as a Savior himself. I feel like he may have some unsavory skeletons in his closet, and more than a little red on his ledger, I also feel like he would be the easiest to manipulate of the group. And if this is the case; it won’t take Negan long to identify that trait and exploit it.

So when Negan gets out and is running around Alexandria, will everyone be “Yo! Jesus! You’re back rocking it old school but….When did you gain all that weight?”

I was bummed on the ending of All out War, Like wow. Negan dresses like Fonzie for a reason and now everyone’s going to bake bread and carve unicorns.

I’m sure with Negan’s Potential “Get out of Jail Free” card, there’s an explosion of grotesque Violence issues, if not panels, away to get the series back to pulse pounding.

I think Negan gives Carl some really good advise in 127. It really caught Rick off guard when Negan asked him if he was taking Carl to The Hilltop. Negan was right about Rick having a hard on for civilization too. Negan is too serious a danger left alive. “The end of the human race will be that it will eventually die of civilization.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Very interesting issue. I can only guess what shall be, but for whatever my two cents are worth, here it goes. Negan, what a character. I don’t know whether to like him or want him dead already. It seems that there’s the possibility that in the foreseeable future Carl might just be in charge of one of the safe havens;when Negan comes to save an old friend, making situations that much harder to deal with. What a crazy world that would be. The dead living again? Where does that leave Rick? I suppose trying to keep Maggie from killing Negan, for what he did to Glen, and trying to accept the fact that Negan saved his son. Talk about being caught in a dilemma. The first walking dead civil war. Of course this would be around issue 211 or so, after Negan is released by the new group, goes away establishing a new community using Ricks methods of governing, and becomes less of a cursing f#*K. Thanks for keeping me guessing…….

So I think everyone is overlooking the importance of the 2 guys from the hilltop, and now that they are out there stranded I was thinking about the possibility that they will run into a herd and while trying to get away they will lead it either to Alexandria, The Hilltop, or The Kingdom. Seeing as how they will be on the next cover I am excited to see what happens, and possibly they will end up at Negan’s old fortress, or if Negan escapes they might run into him? I do believe that Magna lets Negan out after he convinces her, it will probably be an entire issue of deliberation though, because as we all know Rick was up front and said that there is a dangerous criminal that he would take her to meet. Hopefully she decides not to release him, and when Rick comes back a confrontation will ensue. Needless to say this issue was great and I think that it is so cool that besides from the herds they have kind of eradicated the walkers between the 3 communities.

I’m hoping Negan never shows up on the show. The whole saviors story line has just been too over the top and unbelievable to me. Too manufactured and clearly trying to 1up the governor. I guess once Rick has taken charge of 3 whole communities, Kirkman was desperate to give them “Something New To Fear”… To me it just came off as trying too hard.

  72. Razorback July 18, 2014 at 4:42 pm - Reply

If Kirkman wrote a character that is stupid enough to release a man in prison, without considering the possibility of deceit, then I’m fucking raging lol. Guys, Kirkman is better than that. If anything, Magna is going to hear Negan’s side of the story, and then someone like Andrea/Jesus/or the person who has to clean his shit bucket will come downstairs and stop them. Chaos wont resume THAT quickly…I’m sure those two who lost their horse are leading a monumental herd back to Alexandria, and in the ensuing craziness, Negan will get released. Rape Andrea to spite Rick, and then try to escape.

I think maybe Rick could have been a little more understanding to Magna and her group, he was once the same guy that always thought twice before trusting people (Woodbury for example). She is acting just as he once did, checking things out, testing the waters. I hope to GOD she doesn’t let Negan free. I would be surprised if she did, I mean if she doesn’t trust Rick straight away, why would she trust Negan? Although, she did make it clear that she thought they were hiding something.. She already has suspicions of the group. So who knows what could happen. Negan could become very persuasive towards to her, but I feel the act would drop pretty soon.
