The Walking Dead 124 Discussion-UPDATED

We’re on the west coast and we know you’re not all on our schedule (thanks a lot, East Coast). So we put this post up early so you can, at your leisure, come talk about THE WALKING DEAD #124, ALL OUT WAR PART 10 as soon as you get it!

We’re not going to list the major plot points until tomorrow, but we have high confidence that you’ll hit all the salient points! I mean, it’s not you AREN’T going to notice Jesus riding Shiva into battle, right? #WeCanDream

And remember, we want you at your commenting best. One super clever/smart/lucky person who posts the objectively best comment (as judged by yours truly and the ever-impressive Lizzy) will win a signed copy of Issue 124.

Now, get to discussin’.

Ok, here are the major plot points for the issue:
Jesus: Badass.
Carl: Badass.
Eugene: Badass? Yup.

The Hilltop ambush with the headlights, that was tight, right?!
Carson and Jesus manage to piece together the tainted weapons strategy, which leads to a shocked Rick and co. WE STILL DON’T KNOW!
Negan once again looks mighty pleased with himself after getting his ass kicked.

Only two issues of ALL OUT WAR left. How will it all end?!

UPDATE: And our favorite comment was from Hatty Flanagan!

Cant wait to get off work tomorrow and grab this. Can you ask your boss to let you off early on certain wednesdays because you RELIGIOUSLY read TWD?? :P:P

I have a feeling that things are going downhill for Negan FAST in this next episode. Saviors are really exposed and with Negan believing that Rick is done for, most likely he’s going to pull out quicker than Mark did when the saviors caught Amber “cheating” on him.

    • Daniel Boyer March 25, 2014 at 6:51 pm - Reply

I am wondering if Negan will ever discover Eugene and others have escaped…or he will meet his demise first…not that it really matters…

Next and final move appears to be that of Rick and his people…while Negan thinks Rick is dead or dying…is enough to bring the survivors down…if he is wrong…that will be his downfall…

Dwight is set up to be a hero…all comes down to the tainted or untainted bolt…

  3. Daniel Boyer March 25, 2014 at 6:14 pm - Reply

RK said we would know Rick’s fate in 124…he lied

The tainted weapons idea of Negan’s…actually worked…but we still don’t know if the arrow that hit Rick was tainted…he is not showing any signs of it being tainted…like others…but we don’t know for sure yet…

  4. Daniel Boyer March 25, 2014 at 6:27 pm - Reply

One big thing we might eventually be able to take from this issue…Rick’s first reaction that Dwight is against him…would certainly change…if Rick does not fall to the fate of being injured by a tainted weapon…Dwight will come across as a genius eventually…

I am shocked the tainted weapon gig worked…

  5. Darrel Arnold March 25, 2014 at 6:30 pm - Reply

Also – Can one of the Saviors kill Gregory please? That cowardly douche has been alive WAY too long. One (of the many) thing I love about TWD is how the characters I love to hate are killed in the most brutal ways. Can any character death top Spencer’s demise? If there is one person deserving of the old ultraviolence – it’s Gregory.

  6. Mike D. March 25, 2014 at 6:39 pm - Reply

How can we discuss it? It isn’t even in stores until tomorrow…

I think it’s fair to say Rick isnt going to kick the bucket just yet.. I feel like theres a lot more to milk off of him before really killing him off. I also don’t want Negan to die either though, seriously Negan is gone above and beyond being my favorite character in the comic. He just has that real love hate thing going for him. (even after the death of glenn) Negan has managed to steal me completely. I guess I cant come to grasp with the idea that one of them will more then likely die.. but knowing Robert Kirkman, I’ve learned to expect the unexpected from him. All I know is in the end imma be happier than a fuckless fuck on free fuck day. Excited as hell for 126.

    • Daniel Boyer March 26, 2014 at 12:18 am - Reply

Mucking the weapons turned out to be a good idea…so Negan is not a total buffoon…but he does not seem to grasp, there are folks around him that are in the process of undermining his authority…i.e., the escape of Eugene and savior defectors in 124…and it appears as though the arrow shot by Dwight in 123 just might have been a clean arrow (to Negan’s surprise, if it works out that way)…

Appears his decision to camp out so close and visually obvious to the survivors…will likely turn into his demise…

      • Rico Suave March 28, 2014 at 1:11 pm - Reply

Yeah I agree, I don’t think the arrow Dwight shot Rick with was mucked up seeing as Nicholas and everyone else injured by the saviors weapons are showing signs of infection (fever symptons and sweating) while RIck seems unaffected.

  10. Chad Pabalan March 26, 2014 at 4:25 am - Reply

I think TWD 124 will not be the end of Rick Grime’s simply because he has unfinished business with Negan, He will get a hold on Lucille and end Negan’s reign forever. Wishful thinking Lol

The war has begun to take a toll on us all? More like, This war has begun to troll us all! Seriously though, we did not “learn more about that arrow thing sticking out of Rick.” Other than he is showing no signs of fever… yet? Absolutely loved seeing the Euge take charge, its a good look for him. More Michonne and Jesus ninja skills? Yes please.

If Rick dies Negan and his group are fucked. If Rick lives Negan and his group are fucked. When they learned about the infected weapons at the end, they became more motivated to kill Negan than ever before.

I was really hoping that Shiva was going to crash that Savior campfire party at the end. That poor tiger has probably had to live off of rotten walker meat this whole time. She would probably love to have some Negan a l’orange by now.

  22. AlbaMeira March 26, 2014 at 11:10 am - Reply

To be honest the whole audacity of the campfire scene with Negan took me for a loop. You got people dying in the survivor compounds and this man is roasting marshmellows in the Zombie Apocalypse whats next. Negan going only you can prevent forest fires? 10/10 Issue for the night scenes.

With Negan so close to the Hilltop why do you guys think Michonne isn’t going after him like she did the governor? I’m guessing she learned from her mistakes with Tyreese and she also doesn’t have as much against Negan as she did the governor.

    • Matt Stevens March 26, 2014 at 1:41 pm - Reply

I think Michonne and Jesus both wanted to. However securing the hilltop was more important. But yeah her hatred of the governor was far more personal

    • Robvious23 March 27, 2014 at 7:58 am - Reply

Yeah, she very nearly got her self killed on that little mission.

There’s the scene where her and Jesus are looking out of town, pointing a something. She says “is that what I think it is?” I was positive I was going to see a two page spread of the biggest zombie herd ever seen in TWD. Instead the next page was a cut to negans campfire. What did people make of that? Was it a little cliffhanger,or where they simply looking at the smoky coming from negans fire?

  26. George March 26, 2014 at 1:40 pm - Reply

I swear Robert Kirkman said that in this issue we would learn Rick’s final fate. We still don’t know if he’s going to die or not, I don’t think they will but it’s not certain.

  27. Jack Messick March 26, 2014 at 1:48 pm - Reply

If rick lives, which will probably happen, that would explain negan’s face on 126. But kirkman is one for twists, so if Ricky Grimes bites the dust, hopefully Jesus becomes Carl’s obi-wan.

Man I am so happy to still see Zeke and he is redeming himself. Dwight has himself between a rock and a hard place.

    • Corey Webster March 26, 2014 at 9:12 pm - Reply

I second that! Eugene is a smart man. That’s why the Survivors and Hilltop are going to win All Out War because it’ll be another example of brain over brawn! The Saviors are almost all brawn and no brain, except maybe for Negan sometimes.

      • Jason Thomas March 27, 2014 at 5:58 am - Reply

Very true . Do you think Dwight will make it out the war ?

        • Corey Webster March 27, 2014 at 9:12 am - Reply

I am totally on the fence about whether or not Dwight will make it out alive from All Out War. Not sure. I weigh both sides and see how he could die, and then how he might live. Rick wants to put his foot up Dwight’s ass now, and all the Survivors and Hilltop folks will now be after him (with perhaps a “kill on sight” order?). But then again he might be able to kill or capture Negan soon, thus proving his sorta non-traitor status and proving to Rick et al that he is kinda sorta on their side. But if he kills Negan I assume he still wants to save his wife from the Sanctuary brothel and live happily ever after with her, somewhere. But then again how is he going to get back there to save her? See, I go back and forth and it gets complicated!!

          • Jason Thomas March 27, 2014 at 9:43 am

Very cool answer it does get complicated . I can’t wait to see how his story unfolds it’s probably what I’m most interested in as the war comes to a end .

          • Chris Bigger March 27, 2014 at 5:42 pm

I think dwight knew at some point he might have to shoot Rick. With Neagan being right beside him the whole time he had to do it but with a clean bolt and it wasn’t in a kill shot either I really think dwight knew what he was doing. I think he is on Ricks side but he is so far in with Negan that he has got to be very careful with every move he makes. I think he dies proving himself to Rick and the group.

          • Jason Thomas March 27, 2014 at 6:23 pm

Yes it is going to be hard for him to prove he’s on Rick’s side now . I will be surprised if he even has a chance of explaining his side of things without getting shot himself.

Love Eugene’s fleeting moral crisis- he went from guilt to “fuck him then” in a hot second. Fun to see him lead. Mullet power! Also loved kung fu Jesus’s sweet flying side kick. What a save. He and Michonne make a good team.
It seems clear that Rick isn’t infected- the others are symptomatic and he tells the doc to tend to them, which tells me he’s okay. Guessing Dwight didn’t use a gooped up arrow, unless Rick is playing the tough guy. Seems like he would’ve spoken up if he felt feverish, but then again maybe he didn’t want to hurt moral. I’m a bit disappointed- was hoping for more closure there.
I’m pretty fed up with Dwight! Campfire stories with the guy who melted half your face…really, Dwight, really? I do like Negan’s confidence and strategy. I’m guessing his arrogance will come back to bite him, but I’d hate to see him die. He’s a tasty villain. There’s no way Maggie lets him live though…she should just kill Gregory, too, while she’s at it.
    Bring on issue 125!

  32. Nogle March 26, 2014 at 3:36 pm - Reply

I don’t think he’s infected. I’m worried that Rick will lead a suicide attack on the saviors thinking that he’s already dead. Afraid he’ll take a bat swing to the gut to insure he kills Negan. Like in the movies when someone falls on the blade to ensure the kill shot on the enemy hits and they fall off the cliff together, in death’s embrace.

  33. Matt Stevens March 26, 2014 at 3:39 pm - Reply

Ok a bit of a long shot, but back in the issue when Ezekiel is telling Michonne about his doomed attack on the outpost, he says “I’ve never seen someone turn that quick” then in a recent letter hacks RK said that he will be “exploring the rules of zombies”. In this issue we saw Nicholas get the sweats pretty damn quick after being stabbed. In older issues there was a longer delay in turning after being bitten, Dale being a prime example. So is the Virus ( assuming that’s what caused the apocalypse) mutating? Could the walkers become even more dangerous? Could a simple touch be harmful?

    • Pablo Martínez Dutra March 27, 2014 at 3:10 am - Reply

I think it’s more like a DNA thing. Everyone of us are different and we tend to get sick in different ways. The same goes with the zombie virus. Some humans are stronger than the rest, it’s a fact. So, probably you’ll see an old man like Dale (who comes from a generation with no such bad eating habits as the next generations of fast food and all that shit) enduring the sickness more than a young guy like Richard.

    • Grimmy March 27, 2014 at 6:09 am - Reply

the way they were infecting people during this war was “blood to blood” which is why the victims were getting infected so quickly. with a normal bite or scratch, the virus takes some time to work its way into the bloodstream, but these blood-infected weapons are bypassing the skin and getting straight contact with the victims bloodstream.

All out war has taken a toll on us all, but what will happen to the survivors? IS Rick infected?
Will the survivors pull through and win, or will the saviors win a saddening victory? Will Eugene finally get laid? Find this out, and MUCH more on THE WALKING DEAD.

only 2 more issues until this war finishes and Kirkman recycles yet another plot from the previous 100 plus issues. time to finish it off already . . .

  37. Matthew Heasley March 26, 2014 at 4:21 pm - Reply

It is safe to say that Eugene is one of the most bad ass characters in the comic now. While Negan is roasting marshmallows, Eugene and some others have escaped the saviors compound with some help from Carson. Eugene has killed his first person now too. I think he handled it really well. He is precise and without hesitation about what he does. From manipulating Abraham into protecting him to trying to bight Dwight’s cock off. The Eug sure has found his way into my heart. I believe that Negan’s undoing will be his confidence in himself and the people he keeps around him. I would like to see Maggie be the one who kills Negan and in a very Kirkmanesk fashion too, vengeance for what he did to Glenn. Glenn was a great character with a big heart. He was one of my personal favorites. Viva La Survivors.

    • Corey Webster March 26, 2014 at 9:25 pm - Reply

Is it just me, or is anyone else also digging TV Eugene so far?! The whole comment he made on the last episode about calling the mini van a “grocery grabber” was hilarious. He’s like a Southern Rain Man or somethin on the TV show.

  38. Matt Stevens March 26, 2014 at 4:27 pm - Reply

Its revealed that the cause of the outbreak was due to a dodgy batch of Walter’s crystal meth. Creating a formula he is now immune to walkers and possesses super human strength. He finally tracks down Negan (who pre apocalypse was one of Todd’s uncles Nazi goons). The two begin to fight but Negan is swiftly beaten, Rick intervenes only to be told to “tread lightly”. Walter then grabs Lucille and says “Say my name”.

  39. Hatty Flanagan March 26, 2014 at 5:55 pm - Reply

It seems premature to kill off Rick at this point. It’d be like someone getting a bullet to the head while on death row. It was in the cards, for sure, but not in that way. Rick is the hero of this story. If he dies, we’ll probably see it coming, e.g. some discussion of a legacy, a successor showing signs of independence and being a likable point of view, a lack of loose ends to be resolved in his story line. For one, Earl Sutton (the blacksmith) is supposed to whip up a Captain-Hook-like attachment for Rick’s missing hand once the war ends. I can’t believe it has taken Kirkman this long to play with that idea.

On the other hand, Kirkman did kill off Shiva before allowing us to see her real character develop. A tiger in the zombie apocalypse!? Why give us that and then rip it away before we get to know it?

Dwight did NOT gunk up that arrow which shot Rick. While the other Hilltop dudes were burning up with fevers in #124, Rick looked as cool as a cucumber. I think Dwight is going “Deep Cover” a la Laurence Fishburne in the movie of the same name and is not REALLY on Negan’s side. But then again not really on Rick’s side. I think it’s like badass and high IQ Eugene read it- Dwight’s playing both sides and seeing who wins for his own benefit.

This was a fucking badass issue.
Eugene, Carl, Jesus, Michonne, and for God sake, give some credit to Nicholas! The man just took Rick to the house and endured a stab just to walk alone then. He’s a goddamn hero!

what do you mean “we still don’t know”?
    we do.
the guy who got slashed on the way in started fevering immediately. the others who got it were also fevering. I did not see any sign that Rick was fevering at all.
granted, I was reading this issue with the people who work at the comic store shooting me dirty looks (and amusingly enough, i was holding library books in my hand at the time too! )
picked up “Fall of the governor part 2” from the library on the way in to the comic store.

This comics is getting better and better, and carl said “Dad?” when he knew what Carson said. Rick will probably not die, but the others…. Rick was very lucky that Dwight thinked about keeping him safe with a non infected arrow. That really proves Dwight’s loyalty.

I think, I have the greatest prediction. how will it all end. It’s going to be corny but it’s might be funny. So, In the Hilltop Colony they know that anyone who was injured by the Saviors weapon with walker muck will die and Michonne know where the Savior are hiding at. My prediction is everyone will leave the Hilltop Colony and they the will leave the Injured people and let them turn into Walker. When Negan come back to the Hilltop Colony to destroy them. Negan will just see a ghost town. He will lead his Savior to that building where the Survivor was hiding in. He’s going inside and he just sees a bunch of walkers. He’s thinking he won the war but he hears a knocking at the door. Negan will say, Who’s there motherfucker? and the person at the door will say,
I’am not in danger , Nagan. I’am the danger. Nagan will say, “Fuck you!” and he will open the door and guess what who is at the door. It’s EUGENE with Abraham machine gun. Eugene will say, I AM THE WHO KNOCKS and he will open fire with his Infinite ammunition. That is how the war is going to end.

What do you guys think of my prediction? I know, it’s will never going to happen like that but I’m just being creative.

  53. Raul Rivera March 27, 2014 at 8:02 pm - Reply

The bolt was untainted, Rick would of had a fever set in, Nicholas is
already succumbing to infection and his wound was minor compared to
Rick’s injury. If Dwight wanted to kill Rick he would have, he got Sgt.
Abraham right thru the eye. The fact is Negan melted Half his face off
and is banging his wife and treats Dwight with utter contempt I believe
he wants Negan dead but doesn’t want to be on losing side of the war
either. I felt Eugene’s plan was clever although I thought he killed Donnie too easily. Another badass Michonne team up in this
issue this time with Jesus. Carl, Andrea, and Rick make up an awesome
    battle scared family

  54. March 27, 2014 at 11:49 pm - Reply

With the exception of Carl’s badass moment and Jesus and Michonne parting the sea of walkers, I thought this issue was pretty MEH, just filler really.

    • Anthony Ripley March 29, 2014 at 3:53 pm - Reply

Filler? It literally picks up in the middle of the fight after rick gets bolted. I dont see how its filler when it is directly continuing the main story.

      • March 29, 2014 at 5:39 pm - Reply

Maybe you’re right. Filler isn’t the right word. “Drawn-Out” or “Stretching it” seem more appropriate. The battle was good and I loved the headlight part. But the rest just seemed inconsequential, we the reader already know Rick “may be infected” but now they do too. While it does do a good setup up for 125, it’s the third issue out of the past 5 to end with Negan on the last page telling his people they’ve won, it’s over or it’s about to be over. And that to me is just getting old.

Rick’s fever is making me nervous. I’m still not confident that Negan’s tainted weapons even worked. I would have thought he would have tested that they actually worked on one of his minions.

Perhaps the muck contained weekend zombie virus strain thus immunizing rick and gang from the infection.

ive thought that as a possibility, because the governor didnt get infected by kissing penny, although it wasnt blood he got from kissing her it goes to show that only a bite and death cause infection. That battle lasted a while, and with the possibility of the gunk being in the air for so long it could have killed/weakened the virus enough for antibodies to beat the infection

Having never read the comics, where would the comics Volume & number, match up with the show right now?

Just a thought…could the new characters from issues 127 and 128 be the characters on the new AMC spin off series?

They could be the wives and former members of Neegan’s team. Rick kills Neegan and takes over the group, starting to form a real kingdom or government of sorts and re-establishing some form of community

I think that the mystery woman and the group she is with on 127 seen on the covers is Lilly Caul from Woodbury.
