The Walking Dead 119 Discussion

In this issue of The Walking Dead, Rick and his crew regroup after some big wins (Rick’s group) and a huge loss (Ezekiel’s unprepared group). Ezekiel is inconsolable after the loss of Shiva and his men, and right when you think Michonne might say something nice–BAM! She decks him. “If you’re really this much of a pussy, do what you do best… ACT like you aren’t.” That’s one form of therapy, anyway. As Rick starts planning for Negan’s impending counterattack—BOOOOOM—Negan’s already tossing grenades. Negan trots out a hooded and “gagged” Holly and releases her back into the Safe Zone. When Denise pulls the hood off of Holly, we see say she’s not gagged, she’s a walker. As Holly takes a chunk out of Denise’s arm, Negan orders his men to attack and the issue ends RIGHT THERE. Whew!

Ok, admittedly, I KIND of saw that zombie trick coming at the end but HOLY HELL how awesome was that? That Negan, man. You cannot trust that dude.

Is Ezekiel going to bounce back under Michonne’s tough love?

How sad is that little bit with Aaron returning home without Eric? At least it looks like Aaron’s going to kick some ass.

And The Euge, AKA The Mullet with the Bullets, is cranking shells out as fast as he can. I wasn’t so sure about that guy for a while but he’s coming through big time. And I have a feeling bullets are going to be needed coming up…

Issue 120 is out in two short weeks! January 22!

Below: Give us a comment! The best comment (objectively, not based on votes, Lizzy and I pick, so go ahead and woo us) will get a signed issue of 119!

UPDATE! Comment winner! Well we’ve said it’s not a popularity contest, but with a bunch of upvotes and replies, it’s hard to ignore omnibot, who is now our 2nd favorite scotch-drinking robot after Bender. You have been emailed.

But tell how Holly died ? Did Negan kill her ??? But he said to her “We’re not monsters” … In this issue he clearly proved the opposite !!

Come on Rick and Denise… there is a serious difference between someone breathing and a zombie grumbling… in wartime, you need to look at everything AND listen to everything. Now Evil is withing… and the other one is coming in !! Great issue though

on the next issue I hope they explain how they got rid of the herd of zombies!

As I read the issue, I was wondering if the hooded woman was Maggie as a twist, but a zombie Holly was a crazy twist I didn’t see coming. I can’t even imagine how Rick is going to get out of this one!!

I wish I could praise this issue like everyone else but I found it disappointing. I the holly trick was so obvious I was kinda pissed that Rick fell for it. Ezekiel was my favorite new character. And now he’s half the man he was before. Keep issue 119 I’d rather have a signed issue of 118. ;o)

I think the most interesting thing here is Denise’s fate. So far, it’s common knowledge that whenever a person is biten, the damaged limb must be amputated immediately to avoid spreading the infection. But I wonder if such an extreme measure is really necessary. If everybody , regardless of causa mortis, will become a zombie after dying, then the bite only kills because of the infection itself, therefore maybe a deep cleaning and a treatment using antibiotics might solve the problem.

Denise is a doctor. It’d be really interesting if she had this insight and try healing herself from Holly’s bite (and struggle against the infection while attenting to the wounded brought by Rick) instead of repeating an amputation once more, which has already become pretty much boring. It could lead to another improvement in controlling the living dead.

And by the way, wtf is Dwight doing ??? Standing there and quietly like a perfect soldier “Sir, yes Sir !”. Wouldn’t it be easier if he had killed Negan BEFORE they got to Alexandria ? I don’t think opportunities are missing there

Michonne was right to punch Ezekiel in his face. THIS IS WAR, people die. If everyone acted like Ezekiel then everyone would be sitting on the couch right next to him. Now Ezekiel will wake up again and kick some ass and I can’t to see it!!! And I’m worried about Eugene, I think he’s in trouble once Negan finds out what he’s doing with the production of all the ammunition. I predict bad things in the near future for Eugene.

Issue 119 came with big surprises Denise bite and that Holly couldnt get her revenge was unexpected. If Negan is using grenades the survivors should use the hard way the bazooka, Aaron should do Holly last wish TRY TO KILL NEGAN.

Kirkman has really been keeping up with the cliffhanging-where-is-the-next-issue-already endings. I LOVE IT! Truly is an amazing series. You think you have a grip on their situation, then bam, chicks really a walker. Teaches you not to get to attached to these characters >_<

Have a feeling that Michonne dies next issue which puts Ezekiel back into action and wants revenge so much more.

“Rick, come out, come out wherever the fuck you are!”

I was hyped when I read that!!!!

That last page was fucking intense!!!

I started screaming knowing that I have to wait 2 fucking weeks to read what happens!!!

    They did Holly wrong…

I think Eugene is the key to this war.

Him making ammo makes him a valuable key to winning the war for the survivors.

Every man needs a woman like Michonne to get you back in check when you are slipping.

This is going to get interesting!!!

    RIP Holly.

Ever since Negan showed up in the pages of The Walking Dead and turned Glenn’s head into wet pulp, I’ve been on the edge of an anxiety attack whenever I’m reading the book. Negan literally scares the piss out of me. In that I feel an anxious need to urinate whenever he’s around. Or worse, when he’s not around. As if I’m going to turn a page and WHAM! There’s Negan, waiting to skin Michonne, or Andrea, or Carl even with that gnarly hunting knife.

I think 120 might require something in the way of Xanax and a scotch in order to fortify myself. But then I’d just forget the whole thing and have to read it again in the cold light of sobriety. C’est la vie.

Needed more cursing from Negan! The war is getting intense! I have a feeling Rick dies, Carl kills Negan and the story follows Carl on his path to being a villain. He’s seen way too much shit to not be a villain later on. Plus it would be a really cool change in the story from following the hero on this brutal journey to the point he dies and then following his son as he loses it after his fathers death.

  22. Matthew Heasley January 8, 2014 at 2:21 pm - Reply

Jesus sets the tone for this issue by asking Rick if he thinks they are laughing at us. Rick’s mind is so set on the destroying the Saviors he says “The Saviors? They’d be stupid if they were.” Jesus reminds Rick that “they’re always out there. Lurking around each corner just waiting to kill us.” Jesus is right that they are just making it easier for them. Ezekiel is feeling really guilty and is having a very hard time dealing with the death of Shiva, Richard and his people. Michonne slugs him to get his attention and to remind him that those people who lost their lives have families that still need him. Aaron is also distraught. It is the first time in his house without Eric. He tells Heath that they used to joke that they were the last two gay men on earth. After Rick asks him if he’s going to be okay Aaron says “Not until every last one of those motherfuckers is dead”. Carl actually smiles when he sees that his father has returned safely. After Rick finds out that Ezekiel’s attack was unsuccessful, he knows that Negan will be organizing a counter attack. Just as Rick is planning to put shooters in the windows, a grenade comes flying over the fence and explodes an unoccupied house. Rick goes outside to see what’s going on and there is Negan. Standing on the hood of a big rig with Lucille in one hand and a grenade in the other. Rick is all but too quick to open the gates for what he thinks is Holly with a hood over her head. Rick is about to try to talk to Negan when Denise pulls the hood off of Holly to reveal she is now a zombie. Zombie Holly takes a big bite out of Denise’s arm and in the confusion Negan gives the order to attack. Dwight is right behind Negan as he gives this order. Dwight is also in the center of this issues cover, looking pretty badass. I have a feeling that Dwight will play a big role in what’s to come next.

I hope they explain why Negan had such a change of heart of how they treated Holly. First he stabs one of his men in the neck for attempted rape and then kills her. Great move on his part though. There only doctor is practically useless if not dead.

  24. Devin DeLuca January 8, 2014 at 5:24 pm - Reply

Honestly, I had thought that maybe it was one of Negans men who was dressed as Holly not her as a walker. Denise is by far gone and I feel like thcat will leave some psychological scars on Heath and the rest. Ezekiel is in a bad spot and from leading his men to death and losing shiva he is just one push from either betraying them since his men did not die before Ricks plan or being killed off himself in some sort of self sacraficing way to atone for what he did. Either way this war goes down it is intense and will only get better from here on out.

OK. So I have never been one to go for the “bad guy,” “the villain,” but this Negan dude, he is so badass that I just can’t get enough of him. He is quite the reasonable villain, you follow me? Seriously, I have nightmares about this guy. The governor tore up my girl Michonne, but I was so ready for him to die and do not miss him one bit! But Negan, I almost hate to see him die although I hate him so much for what he did to Glenn. He was so cool with Carl…I might feel differently haver issue 120. I am a bit nervous. Poor Holly, I didn’t expect her to be zombiefied! BUT…COME ON, NEGAN deserves some freakin credit there, follow me?! How brilliant was this distraction before he calls his attack? Being the reasonable guy Rick knows he is (rolling my eyes), why wouldn’t Rick think he just wanted to chat after they have slaughtered many of the Saviors? I can’t get enough…come on issue 120!!!!!! (I love Rick, but boy, there is something about NEGAN!!!!!!!!) Best Villain EVER!

  29. J. Moore January 8, 2014 at 7:00 pm - Reply

I can’t believe they killed Holly! And apparently Denise. Think Alexandria falls in the next issue setting up “the aftermath of the unthinkable”. And the Saviors will find Eugene and take over the ammunition factory creating a really messed up situation.

  30. Mark Jackson January 8, 2014 at 7:08 pm - Reply

I guess I’m not as clever as you, Brian, because I didn’t see the walker angle coming with Holly. I thought they disfigured her or something, but I’m disappointed with how trusting I was of Negan when he said he wanted to talk. I guess because he’s always been so straightforward and adamant about what he says and does, I just took him at his word. But I’m sure that’s exactly what Kirkman was counting on, too. In one page that was all thrown out the window when it was revealed he had killed Holly and tricked Rick, so kudos to the amazing story writing, as usual. I’m really glad that next issue is only a two week wait; if we’d gotten this one last month and had to wait it would’ve been terrible!
Another big plot point I don’t think anyone’s really considering yet is that Denise was bit. That’s the Safe Zone’s doctor, they’re in a lot of trouble now with a lot of war left to go and no one with any medical knowledge to take care of any of the injured. Negan probably thought he had a good shot at the doc being the one to take Holly at the gate for an examination, so that just shows how far ahead Negan is really thinking. He’s much smarter than the Governor ever was, that much is clear. When the Governor is screaming “Kill them all!” and running over the gates of the prison, Negan is tricking the survivors into opening the gate and believing he wants to negotiate. This is gonna be one hell of a fight in issue 120, who will fall next?

  31. Nolen Sternkopf January 8, 2014 at 7:18 pm - Reply

We have a Governor KILL THEM ALL T-shirt, now it looks like we are gonna need a Negan ATTACK T-shirt! Man that was a fantastic issue, one of my favorites of all time! The ending was unexpected and intense, and with 7 issues remaining in All Out War its obvious a lot of big stuff is really going to go down, and I absolutely cannot wait! I can feel it, the Walking Dead will never be the same after this war…

It´s always interesting to analyse the evolution of the characters in TWD. This new arc, shows us, between others facts, the development of Rick as a growing man of strategics. Since the momet he knew that Negan exists, he started thinking different. Some of this appears already with the hunters, but it was not so complex, they were just a gang. Now, Rick have to push himself into his own limitations, trying to think quicker than a very inteligent enemy. At the beggining he underestimate Negan and made some wrong moves, but he never stopped thinking. Finnaly, it looks like he´s evolving quickly: he could predict clearly next Neagan´s move, but he also plays this mind game. So, all this expeculation stuff it´s really great, because it shows the qualities of two characters living limits situations at every moment and pushing each other into them, challenging themselves to be more and more creative to get the better surprise punch. And all of this, mixed with moral conflicts, humans needs, and this contemplation moments, this existentialism like the scene when Jesus was asking Rick about the “laughing walkers”. It was sublime…

I loved this issue! Michonne’s tough love and Negan’s attack. I knew as soon as I saw the bag over Holly’s head what was about to happen. As evil as Negan is, I really think that was almost justified after the initial attack against Negan that involved shooting out all of the glass in the building to make noise to attract walkers. Maybe it’s not really justified, but I can see how Negan would consider it just.

  34. Felix Mitchell January 8, 2014 at 10:14 pm - Reply

What. An. Issue! It started off slow and I was like, “They said this was an awesome issue…” But those last few pages…I literally read it 3 times over. Did NOT expect Holly’s death like THAT! What I wonder…How did she die? I wouldn’t think Negan killed her, but I wouldn’t put it past him. I’m thinking maybe the guy he stabbed in the neck, came back and bit her….anybody? lol

So I’m too tired to go back and look at my old issues, but Denise is Dr. Cloyd correct? one sure way to get bit in the TWD world is to have had some type of medical background. Now I love Michonne as much as the next guy, but I can not condone the beating of our elderly, even if they owned a Tiger. And thanks for the heart warming Bro-Hug between Aaron and Heath…maybe Aaron will help Heath with his hair. cant wait for #120…ALL OUT WAR! you say? no Sir, it’s All OUT AWESOME!

Fantastic issue. Honestly I thought Negan had cut her tongue out, but turning Holly into a zombie was priceless! Negan is a tremendously callous and insane individual with incredible foresight. But as much as I like him, his end is near. There’s too much bad mojo he’s cranked up now to keep dodging death.

Rick and co. will prevail but at what cost? Another cherished issue, thank you Kirkman and team!

    Bye Bye Michonne

I’m pretty sure she’s going to die. Based on how things usually go in TWD
and how Kirkman loves to surprise us. She doesn’t appear on the covers
following this issue. Plus issues 120 and 121’s plots clearly suggest
that someone important is going to die. And it can’t be Rick, Carl,
Andrea, Maggie or Sophia (they appear on the following covers). So I
    can’t think of anyone else.

But I also think Dwight is going to be a major member of Rick’s community
after War All Out volumes (after readers have doubted of is loyalty to
Alexandria-Hilltop-Kingdom alliance). He will certainly become the
equivalent of Daryl from the TV show (he wears a crossbow in one of the
covers and he has quiete the same “style” (with a burned face in
    addition of course)).

Have a walking day (I know it’s not relevant but I don’t care)

I agree. I really hope Dwight sticks around after All Out War. I’d love to see some interactions between him and his wife Sherry if/when Negan is gone.

I’ve just seen the 125 and 126’s covers and apparently Michonne is not going to die. I think Negan is going to kidnap Eugene but I hope “the unthinkable” is something even bigger. I thought I could find what it is but I guess Robert Kirkman is even more twisted than me.

I mean seriously he is just a fuckin fuck face! Im so hoping for his demise every second. Ive pictured all of Ricks group ending him slowly and painfully but my favorite is Carl bashing his skull in with lucille but not kilking him just almost then lettin our poor Holly eat his balls for dinner still attached of course! Then everyone can do whatever else to him to blow off some steam i dont care. Just want to thank you (and beat u) Kirkman and Co for making this story better than sex just next time can we at least have a little snuggle time after? Im tired! I’m trying to think of any other villain I loathe more than Negan and am coming up empty. There is no other fictional character I can recollect having such a hatred for (except maybe that douche kid king in Game of Thrones). Personal issues aside, Kirkman has done a hell of a job selling Negan as one of the all time most vile and hated villains ever created. This sadistic bastard would make Vlad the Impaler blush. Just when you think there’s an ounce of humanity in him (killing Holly’s would be rapist), he spits it back in your eye with a mouthful of Redman.

It’s truly a double edged sword. On one side, I want Image to team up with Avatar and set the Crossed loose on Negan to unleash a warped, psychotic sense of mirrored justice on him. On the other, I want him and Lucille to keep on dishing out more brutality just to see how much Rick can take before he goes Scanners and pops his top.

for about 10 issues ive been on the verge of losing it because i was for sure this upcoming issue would be the end of Michonne, slowly losing her edge and her confidence until she would run into deaths arms by trying to kill negan by herself possibly during the battle at ASZ or going after him if Negan is to flee. But I really think this issue is setting up Michonnes come back to reclaim her rightful throne of “Baddest bitch on the planet” from Andrea and Maggie (cause they have been out bad assing her as of late 😛 and even that nasty bitch from the saviors lol) after that powerful scene with Ezekiel. Michonne is now the key for inspiring Ezekiel’s upcoming role in this war, which i hope is a great one. Michonne is seen on the cover of issue 125 so she deff survives this war at home (thank grimes) so im really stumped as to who’s blood lucille tastes in “the unthinkable”. unthinkable possibly not being a major death and maybe is Negan overrunning and taking over ASZ and the ammo plant as his own? He did mention ASZ as his new “vacation spot” 😛
