Is Rick's Hand in Danger??

Early on in The Walking Dead comics Rick gets his hand chopped off by The Governor in a torture sequence. Two weeks ago, show fans were in a frenzy when Rick badly cut his hand while taking out walkers. So, was that a preview of things to come? Or was Rick’s hand injury just given to Merle?

Here’s what happened with Merle:

Will it happen to Rick? Thanks to this Hollywood Reporter article, TWD show-runner Scott M. Gimple has the answer. “I’ll give you an absolute because I’ve been dealing with a lot of ambiguity in storytelling here in protecting the story: Rick’s hand is safe,” Gimple said. “You can proclaim it from the mountaintops: His hand is safe! He will be wrapping it. There will be some ointments involved.”

There you have it! What do you think the show would be like sans Rick’s hand? What would the comic be like if he still had it? (Barnes and Noble seems to have a guess). Let us know in the comments. For the rest of the article, make sure to head over to The Hollywood Reporter!

If Rick’s hand comes off, I would much rather them pull a Merle than a comic book hook.

Lol, they’re still making fun of the Barnes & Noble cover.

It still makes no sense though as the machete was covered in Walker blood and gore, if his hand doesn’t go then he will. We know that Walker guts can also be used as weapons. Maybe the show has changed that logic?

It should’ve been taken off long ago and it should’ve been the governor. That was one of the craziest moments in the comic for me. When I turned the page and saw the governor chopping Rick’s hand off, it shocked the shit out of me. It made me realize right then and there that Kirkman really doesn’t give a fuck. He’ll do whatever he wants to these characters and it made me love the comic even more. I was like wow, if he’d do that to the main character….
If nothing is going to happen to Rick’s hand on the show, than why are they making such a big deal about it? Well, the internet is making a big deal about it but still, they keep showing him trying to wrap it up and they seem to be focusing on it an awful lot. If they weren’t going to take it off I would think they wouldn’t be showing him trying to deal with it so much. I don’t know, at this point I’d kinda be disappointed if they didn’t take it off.

I just wanna know why Gimple didn’t let it stay suspenseful. No matter what we know about past cuts & injuries in the show, no matter how it went/goes in the comic, why give us the answer? I’m disappointed… probably the only one who is… but that’s how fanatical I am about the show!

Because he knows it has no positive outcome. Glenn issue in my mind is still a viable story regardless of his death or non-death simply because it has already been said he will reappear in some fashion. (which is what we are speculating on)
      .
Rick’s hand though has zero point in being talked on as talking about something that has zero effect on future story takes away from the story. He knows his hand will not be cut off so he is ending all speculation because it takes away from focus on show.
      .
Which brings back to point… why would he not simply tell us Glenn is dead or not? He has not said he is dead… so there is the fact we know that Glenn will be a part of the story in the future regardless of what form that might take.
      .
But then again… maybe he is simply misleading us and everyone gets their hands chopped off in Season 7? ha

You’re not the only one. I was actually surprised Gimple said anything. I would’ve expected a I can neither confirm nor deny. I am a comic fan first and I try to be careful not to spoil anything for people who aren’t. I have had the last couple seasons dulled because of spoilers. It’s getting to the point I can’t be on the Internet. So if Rick’s fine does that mean it has to be a bite/deep scratch? Just mixing blood won’t do it?

    • BASTET. November 7, 2015 at 2:03 pm - Reply

I think mixing blood won’t do it. There’s been plenty of bloodborne pathogen exposure throughout the show. I have my theory that what’s inside survivors’ blood is like being dormant & what’s inside a walker’s mouth is like venom. When it’s blood on a nonliving surface, like a weapon, it must be “dead” like what’s in a flu shot. I’m probably wrong, but I truly don’t think anybody really has a handle on exactly how it works. And when comparing it to the comic, who’s to say that the rule in the show has to follow? Who’s to say that this infection can’t evolve if Gimple wanted it to? I’m foggy on exactly how things went down in the comic when a certain event took place, but even if I remember the fine details, I’d still want to be held in suspense for the show. So when a director/producer/actor/actress offers up info like this, they take something away from the show, just like a spoiler would… at least, for me. Although I don’t consider this a spoiler, I term this as TMI & this is not the first time I’ve been hit with it; it’s not as bad, but it’s not something I want. SMH

I didn’t even look at it in the sense that they could have different rules for the show vs. The comic. It will be interesting to see though how if it’s different rules for both how the later story will turn out. Either way I’m down. I am seriously tired of spoilers though… gets my blood boiling. Hopefully people who matter read these posts… maybe they could change it.

Unfortunately, I think there are more people who like spoilers or don’t mind spoilers than there are of us & I believe that they don’t mind feeding this crowd by letting them stalk the sets & even throwing them a bone every now-and-then. Keeping the majority of the “fans” happy. One of the best things about filming the Grady Bunch is that drones & binoculars didn’t pick up the action. That’s one reason why Beth’s death had such a huge impact, I think. I’ve cut out quite a bit of online reading since last season’s finale, but the spoilers have still managed to find me. The first half of this season has already been ruined for me. During the mid-season break, I’m gonna decide what I need to do to completely protect myself from exposure. That may mean I hit this site on the comic-related posts only & maintain my social networking with my spoiler-hating crew. Anything else could be tainted.

Beth was ruined for me by the internet. Before the whole posting before the different time zone could watch deal. I was invested in Beth. If it wasn’t spoiled I would have cried at her demise. Instead I just got a knot in my throat. I honestly don’t get the spoiler friendly crowd. At all. Why would you want to watch if you know what’s going to happen? The ability to leave you with a WTF just happened, or did what I think just happened really happen moment. That is good story telling. It’s hard to come by. Ok I lost track on my spoiler rant here but I hope I get my point across.

Also now that I think about it. On the show, does a scratch do it? I don’t know if anyone has turned from a scratch.

I always thought Merle losing his hand served that part of Rick’s story and I LIKE IT. As a reader of the comics it’s nice for me watching the storylines manifest differently on the series. It’s like a bonus.

“I’ll give you an absolute because I’ve been dealing with a lot of ambiguity in storytelling here in protecting the story” … huh? Glenn has something to do with Rick’s hand? Nicholas’s fresh guts have something to do with Rick’s hand?

I was around but I never really posted anything. Honestly I got tired of talking about it with people at work because I never realized how much of a nerd I am. People like BASTET seem to get it.

None of my coworkers watch or read TWD. My family roll their eyes as soon as they think I’m gonna say something about TWD… again. Other sites have too many trolls & disrespectful people. This site & my online crew are my only outlets. That’s why I’m so devoted.

I love the comic more then the show, I’ve always wanted Rick to loose his hand, I hope it happens, this whole Glenn thing, I really think he is dead, if he isnt, that’s dumb, this show need a game changer, something to shift things, almost everyone I know thinks he is alive, none of them read the comic

NO one want Ricks hand to come off!

  12. LissaLux November 8, 2015 at 7:33 pm - Reply

I remember an interview or something like that a long while back where they said Rick wouldn’t lose his hand because it would take too much time to do it. I mean, Merle had the metal Terminator thing, which could easily be slipped on and off. I don’t think there would be an easy and semi-quick way for the SFX/Makeup team(s) to do something like that.

I think logistically it would have been too hard and required too much for Rick to lose his hand. Merle’s looked like a cap on a hand. For Rick, they would have needed green screen and that would have caused production costs and hassle to go up way too much.
