How Is the Show Going to Deal with THAT?!

We all know that Robert Kirkman, Scott Gimple, and the other producers and writers on AMC’s The Walking Dead like to take liberties with the comic. Lately it’s been fairly faithful, and Scott likes sticking pretty close, while Robert likes to play around with the story. Sometimes things are changed for budgetary reasons, sometimes for character reasons, sometimes logistics. We thought it might be fun to look at a few… challenging plot points coming up for the show (both short and long, long-term). Comic spoilers and potential show spoilers forthcoming, naturally. I would call these spoilers mild to mild-heavy. I won’t use specific names for the deaths, but God help you if you venture to the comments. Also, if you’re on social media I’m sure you’ve already heard the names, but I won’t use them here.

Andrea’s Absence

If you don’t know, and you should, Andrea is still alive and kicking in the comic ‘verse of TWD. In fact, she’s absolutely critical to the world. Hence, it was a little head-scratching when she met her tragic end on the TV series. So far, this hasn’t been a huge deal. In the comic Andrea has steadily built her importance over time, from sharp-shooter to Rick’s love interest and Carl’s mom. It’s these latter elements that will prove most interesting in the show. It’s pretty easy to have Sasha move into the role of the sniper, but have her and Rick even talked to each other? I think it’s likely that there won’t be a romantic link between Rick and Sasha, but then who will fill that void? This isn’t the first time we’ve pondered this. In fact, Lizzy wrote an entire article about how Sasha could possibly take Andrea’s place.

Negan’s Swearing

So how exactly do you write the TV-safe version of “Here I am, friendly as a fuckless fuck on free fuck day” anyway? We’re going to find out eventually. There are four options:
1) You make up some fake curse words. Battlestar Galactica did it with “frak” so there is a precedent. It never felt right to me, though, and its impact was always lessened. Can you imagine Negan saying, “Friendly as a farckless farck on free farck day?” It’s like when Sam Jackson complains about all the “monkey fightin’ snakes on this Monday-to-Friday plane.”
2) Bleeps. COPS does it all the time. And it is BLEEPing annoying.
3) Audio drops. Instead of a distracting audio bleep, just drop the audio on the F-bombs. And S-bombs. And C-bombs, and Z-bombs, and Q-bombs and all the other awful words Negan might sprinkle through a casual chat. It’s better than bleeps and I think this is how AMC currently deals with the occasional Breaking Bad and Mad Men F-bomb.
4) Let it fly! This is 2015! We can show a man shove his gun inside a re-animated corpse’s head to blow its brains out but we can’t say a word?

I see two problems here.

First problem: Getting a tiger on screen. Either it’s a REAL tiger on set (problematic, expensive) or it’s CGI (looks fake, still expensive). I mean, Grodd looked pretty ok on The Flash, but that isn’t exactly a gritty, semi-realistic apocalypse show. Maybe a blend of the two?
Second problem: People believing a guy could have a pet tiger. It was hard enough for comic fans to swallow and I think that stuff goes over a lot better on the page. Actually seeing it is another thing. But maybe that will make it even more believable. I tell you what, if they pull it off, it’s going to be one damn lovable tiger.

Given the above is it possible they just lose the Shiva part? Will they give Ezekiel like a giant badass dog instead? Not quite the same thing but I’d cry for days when you-know-what happens.

THOSE Two Deaths

Two of the most heartbreaking deaths (in my opinion) are coming up, one via an arrow to the head, and one at the wrong end of Lucille. I don’t know why I’m being coy about this, but I am so, apologies. The arrow death I could very much still see happening. And it will be sad. Especially with more character development still to take place before it happens. But the show version of that character hasn’t outgrown his comic origins so I don’t see how/why things would change.

The OTHER death, the biggie from issue 100? Man, I don’t know. People will lose it if that happens. And the person it happens to? That’s my favorite character! But isn’t that kind of the point? It’s SUCH a big moment, and so well known that changing who dies, and teasing it out, would be an awesome way to toy with and surprise the audience. I’m just trying to keep hope alive, y’all.

The one thing that throws everything off is the Daryl variable (the Dariable?). I mean, he could sub in for any death at any time. Not that I think they will, but YOU JUST NEVER KNOW. He’s not in the comic! It’s chaos!

Carl’s Eye

A couple thoughts. The first is that in the comic, Carl REALLY gets his eye shot out. Like his eye, his ear, a quarter of his brain. It’s gnarly. He heals up like a champ though. No second-to-second emotional swings, no crazy memory loss, no sudden British accent. So I don’t think the visual carnage will be as bad in the show. IF they do it. My second thought is, they already let Rick keep his hand but mostly because of how limiting NOT having a hand is (loading a gun, fighting, etc). Having one eye won’t stop Carl from doing really anything and they can go the sunglass route to save money on make up too. I hate to say it, but I think Carl might be losing his eye soon…

What do you guys think? Any predictions in regards to the above? What other big moments could they have a problem dealing with on the show? We’ll probably do more of these down the line, so let us know!

I’m hoping to see see Rick and Michonne get together in the show. They’ve already set it up pretty well, and would be a very believable progression.
I’m sure they won’t just let “fuck”s fly everywhere with Negan….especially since Rick didn’t get to use it in his epic season 4 finale line. (My favorite line of Rick’s ever!) Maybe he’ll get to use it once or twice, but maybe not even that. I’m guessing they may just give him words he can get away with…like Abraham’s “motherdick.” It’ll be different without the cursing, because it feels like such a big part of his character.
Shiva…..I have no idea. They may just leave Shiva out completely…but I hope they figure out a way.
Those two major deaths should be done EXACTLY like in the comic. It’s moments like those that help define both the show and comic. The same with Carl’s eye. When I read that moment in the book, I stopped breathing for second…I couldn’t believe it. Carl was dead. He pulled through, of course, and that moment just added to his list of unbelievable things he has gone through. That’s Carl….and I’d love to see that reflected in the show as well.

Well there’s Jessie now…who was always on that road…but Michonne and Rick would make a lot of sense since they’ve completely altered the trajectory by offing Andrea a ways back. Negan?? I say just drop the fbombs… drop the sound … and it will be great on the BluRay!! Tiger?!? Fuck yeah there has to be a tiger!!! Shiva is awesome!!! Carl needs to lose the eye and “Deaths”?? I think they could sub someone in for Lucille. Daryl would be optimum since he is loved as much as the other character!

Firefly nailed the whole made up curse words thing, so I think it’s possible. It’s contagious too, because I let several slip in daily life and people though I was gorram strange. It can work!

That being said, I fucking love throwing out the fucks as much as Negan, so I would LOVE to see him be able to properly express himself!

Please, please blast at Carl’s eye! I’m not so patiently waiting for him to become the bad ass I know he is!

Also, Shiva can be short lived, but better exist!!

  5. MaximumParty May 8, 2015 at 7:18 pm - Reply

Word up! Shiva can happen if its short lived, carl can totally lose an eye, negan should say wanker and rubbish and be british, and sasha is doing a fantastic job becoming good andrea, oh and “those two deaths” could (and should) happen but to different folks, too bad pete ate shit already…

  6. Bsur May 8, 2015 at 11:04 pm - Reply

well sasha only had annoying filler scenes in season 5 so hopefully the character improves or dies.

i kinda hope they keep the kingdom out of the show.. would make sense resource wise. also the tiger is really more of a comic thing.

im hoping for negan to kill daryl or glenn in his introduction.

carls eye should be easy enough to do and i hope they go through with it.

Comic Spoilers (is there still such a thing at this point?)
I think My Sniper will probably be portrayed in the show by a combo of 2 people. Sasha’s definitely the shooter. As for a love interest for Rick, I don’t see any of the long-standing characters filling that role; they are like family & that would just seem awkward at this point. I was thinking that Jessie (who seems a lot stronger in the show) lasts longer than her comic counterpart & becomes the lover.
Portraying Negan is the biggest curiosity I have! The best thing they could possibly do is let it fly… but I don’t see that happening at all (& in a way, that’s good for TV). Next best thing would be to totally drop the audio but let a few slip here & there. Filler fucks just wouldn’t work for Negan & those fucking beeps get on my fucking nerves!!
I was thinking that Shiva would be a tale to be told… that we would catch glimpses of her in Ezekiel’s memory. That way, CGI could work its magic, even if it’s only in a few brief hazes of memory.
Those 2 deaths…. one name for ya: Scott M. Gimple. Only thing I don’t believe he’d do is take Daryl out.
If this show aims to go forward & not be canceled before we get to Negan, Carl needs to lose the eye. I believe that whole exchange in the comic of when Negan first talks to Carl & uncovers his eye is a pivotal moment in the way Carl feels about Negan & later, it obviously becomes a part of who he is & how he carries himself. I think this would release the badassery on TV & I don’t believe they’d balk at doing it. As for the makeup, given everything else that we see in this show, a missing eye with a half gnarly face for Carl is the LEAST of my worries; they just need to make it happen!

As much as that lucille death needs to occur for another (female) character to strive as a leader, i really think(and hope) that daryl dies by lucille instead. I feel as viewers will most likely freak out and hate negan more if he kills such a heartthrob. Also, i strongly dislike daryl’s character because he is essentially given invincibility and often bends the reality of the show because so many people are head over heels for him. He needs to be extracted.

In the comics Carl loses his eye when Rick Jessie Carl and Jessie’s son tries to fight through a herd of walkers, both Jessie and her son dies and someone shoots Carl. Now in the comics there was no Judith and I really don’t see Rick fighting through walkers with Judith. With that said there can be other ways for Carl to lose his eye, and I agree that it’s an important story line with Negan. If they do kill Jessie I don’t know who would be Ricks love interest since Michonne ends up with Ezkeil. It’s going to be fun and a great ride I just hope they change it enough where You know who doesn’t get killed by Negan. But they also changed his character from the comics, his comic book character was whinny , he’s much tougher in the show so maybe they will change who dies mabe Nicholas!!

What’s going to happen to Morgan now he’s so much stronger than his comic book character???? I don’t see him dying easily. Even the herd. Wtf are they doing with the character Enid???? I’M FIMRLY BEHIND SASHA BEING THE NEW ANDREA. that franccine character swap out just gives it away to me. Plus she’s the only character who cold replace the no way out and larger world Andrea next to Carol who also isn’t alive in the comics at this point. “We don’t die”. But i feel like it could be Carol who meets Lucile first. I’m definitely not in a hurry to see that. Love tv Carol. As far as Negan goes, hmmmmmm……….. Fuck….. fucking fuck. I would love to see pure negan on tv but i know that wouldn’t happen. Best fucking deal i could think of is the fake curse word. Just gotta be a good one. Better than motherdick. I think the Shiva thing is awesome. Reading the kingdom story in the comic was one of my favorite. I used to think like wow that had to be hard to lose his family and make it out with her. Shiva has too be on the show. Hands down. I see Carl losing his eye. It was major development for him. Also some more of my favorite comic book parts. Him surviving that him and early negan. That shit omg so much good ass acting and action to come. I want to say about the whole Daryl/Dariable thing. Daryl is the smartest person on the walking dead. He is the first character that knew the only way to completely kill a zombie was threw the brain. He’s the only character that can survive on his own for extended period of time next to remix Carol. He was a scout for the prison and also on the counsel. Now a scout for Alexandria. And still one of the secret council between another carolble lol. Daryl knows his shit. The walking dead is working tf outta these non comic Elements and i think it’s good for the show. Yea Daryl could meet negan first but so could carol… Morgan…. or the original. Don’t want to see any of them die but we know they have to at some point. I think Daryl has survived on the show so long because he’s had the most development since the very beginning of the show with being how he thought he was and losing Meryl. Become apart of a new family. Becoming a contributor almost losing himself to hold strong and still be a asset to this group. Nobody knows what’s going too happen in the show. That’s the beauty of it even if things get spoiled or i know what happened in the comics you just never know what to expect with the show. Ps. Jesse dies with baby Judith trying escape the Alexandria herd. Carl gets shot in the eye in a different yet similar twist of tug of war for baby Judi compared to her not letting go of Carl’s hand. He’s just too big and strong for that now. (CARL POPPA) could see that twist. Can’t wait to see the wolves get SashaSlayingAction worse than them wild dogs. Can’t wait for season 6

I thinks it’s obvious what the show is planning on doing with Morgan. He’s going to become Ezekiel.

i think carl losses his eye in the mid-season finally.

I want a filthy mouthed Negan and Shiva’s storyline to stay similar to the comic. THEY CAN FUCKING DO IT, THEYRE THE FUCKING WALKING DEAD.

Does Any one else See Daryl Getting Glenn’s Death In The Show?

How funny would it be if TV Ezekiel had a house cat named Shiva? I think that would be hysterical. And Negan – I’ve said this before. I think it would be funny if there was a running joke that TV Negan won’t tolerate bad language. Like one of his men says “shit” and he punches the guy out and says he won’t stand for bad language. The irony would work for non-comic fans and comic fans alike.

does anyone really like ezekiel and the kingdom? i always felt it was out of place, even in the comics. ezekiel really hasnt done anything impressive since he appeared. im honestly hoping that the kingdom fades out even more/is removed (maybe by the whisperers?) from the comics, and that it never appears in the show.
