Episode 416: Panel to Screen Comparison

Season Finale! It was a hum-dinger!

The definitive comic moment tonight, and the one that’s a BIG, crazy moment from the comics, is the attempted rape of Carl by bandits. The players and situation have changed a bit, but a lot of the action and the fall out is the same.

In the comic (issue 57, Volume 10: What We Become), Rick, Abraham, and Carl take a side trip to Rick and Carl’s hometown to check for supplies at the police station and the check on Morgan and Duane. Their first night out, they’re held at gunpoint by a small group of men.
1Rick-in-Trouble-compare-small

When Carl is endangered, Rick fights back, but ends up in a bear hug, his arms trapped at his sides.
2Rick-Fights-Back-compare-small

Rick goes full savage, ripping Joe’s throat out like a walker.
3Rick-Bites-compare

With just Carl’s attempted rapist left, Rick insists on killing him himself, and it’s not pleasant.
4Rick-Kills-compare-small

You can see that in the show, Rick’s actions are almost identical. Granted, this time it’s “The Claimers” (as the fans have been calling Daryl’s group) and not some nameless bandits. Also, it’s Michonne who Rick is with, not Abraham (whom he has yet to meet).

It changes Rick in both cases, but in the comic, Abraham is the one who ends up confessing a troubled history of his own ruthlessness. In the show, Rick confesses his fears about his humanity to an understanding Daryl. In both cases, Carl listens in.

The last big thing that we’re able to show you is the very end of the show, which hopefully was VERY familiar to comic readers, even if the setting and situation isn’t exactly the same. This is from the final panel of issue 64 from Volume 11: Fear the Hunters.
5Final-lines-compare-small

What did we miss, or what do you THINK we missed? We can’t give everything away, you know. 😉

Not gonna be surprised if Gareth chops off Rick’s hand in season 5. It would only make sense. Also, it would be badass if Rick in the show pays homage to Dale’s leg incident in the comic, claiming that he got infected as Gareth or the other Terminus residents gnaw on his hand. Great way to end season 4 by the way, looking forward to season 5 😀

I slightly agree but the have to pay homage to famous “tainted meat” line, and I dont think rick is going to get bit anytime soon.

….I think the “tainted meat” line is going to come from someone other than Rick.

It was Dale in the comics, right? Tyreese is killed by the Governor at the Prison in the comics and it’s Herschel on the show. Dale’s already gone on the show, so one could speculate that Tyreese gets bit and captured by The Hunters and is the one that delivers the tainted meat line. It could happen.

Kirkman still regrets cutting off Rick’s hand. And if it was annoying for him in the comic it will be worse in the show.

      • Jonathon Moreau says:

He does regret it in the sense that he always has to write around it but he mentioned in the Reddit AMA that he thinks crippling him like that was still a great move for the comics.

i agree with ya to a point, but i dont think they would cut off ricks hand. if ya think about it, to pay homage to everything in regards to the comics, wouldn’t make more sense to have them kill bob and eat him, and find out that he actually was infected when he was bitten on the shoulder in the woods?

    • Jonathon Moreau says:

He’s made it clear he won’t do that. In the comic it’s great but it’s easy to draw stills. In a show with constant motion (and AMC’s lackluster budget) Kirkman has said it would be far too much of a constant pain to do that.

      Reply
    • Scot Wharton says:

….I don’t think they’ll cut off RIck’s hand in this TWD universe, at least not anytime soon. Just echoing what Jamie already mentioned, Kirkman has said he regrets doing that. It also adds production costs.

Freakin’ awesome. Good to see that BAMF Rick is back! Sucks to wait until October though. Rick ripping that guy’s throat out is one of my favorite scenes from the book. As a father, I totally feel where he’s coming from. The only thing that would have made it better in the show was a dramatic slo-mo of the bite (imho). Cannot wait to see how they resolve this.

It would be funny if they are still standing there and the door opens to reveal Carol, who has gone through and eliminated everyone at Terminus. Just saying.

And I am especially glad that Joe wasn’t Negan. The whole “rules” thing had me worried that they were going to rush into the Saviors storyline. But awesome turning Terminus into the Hunters… onward to Alexandria!

Its weird, I never really noticed that absence of bad language until someone pointed it out to me. In the uk no matter what station a show is on, if its after a certain time the programe can use profanity.

          • Bastet says:

No, what’s weird is that the frequency of the F-bomb is considered crossing the line but everything else can be used in greater moderation. There IS moderation, despite what Mark Sambola Jr said, and it does lessen according to the time of day, although I’ve heard some pretty colorful things at 8 PM.

          • Stuart Ormston says:

So whats the difference between AMC and HBO which people have mentioned? why can HBO use Profanity but AMC can’t, am not really up on the network complications in the US?

          • Bastet says:

HBO’s a premium. You get AMC on the regular cable lineup, but you have to pay extra for HBO.

          • Stuart Ormston says:

Ok so a bit like freeview and Sky over here, forgive my ignorance 🙂

Nothing to forgive, mate! I couldn’t tell anybody a thing about freeview and Sky!

        • Brendan Burke says:

Huh… yeah, good point. I hadn’t actually thought of that and as someone else has pointed out why is it ok for HBO and not AMC? I live in the states and I don’t understand how it works. But regardless, one f bomb certainly should have been allowed in this context…

the comics don’t ruin the show by any means. there are a lot of differences as far as what characters are still alive so really the comics, to me, make the show even better because you get to look for the similarities and anticipate comic panels ect. and yet the show will surprise you still and the surprise is just that much better when you have an expectation that seems to have gone undone in the show and then it happens but with a twist. You get what I’m sayin?
