Greetings, world wide web!
I’m Lizzy, also know as the littlest Skybounder. Actually, no one calls me that, but now they might. I’ve been working at Skybound for three short weeks, but I’m already head-over-heels in love with the fabulous work we put out, the silly cast of characters I get to call co-workers, and the eerie silence of our office.
I’ve been a long time fan of comics, as you might imagine. My dad introduced me to silver age classics growing up, and with his guidance I built up my own collection throughout middle school and high school. This culminated in me getting my first job at Lee’s Comics in Mountain View, CA, where I literally pestered them until they hired me.
If you’ve ever been, you may have recognized me as that one girl who worked there. Despite a few incidents of customers yelling, “OMG GIRL!” from across the street and some awkward attempts to pass me numbers (hint: if a girl works in a comic book store, I guarantee she’s taken), the job was awesome. I worked with some of the coolest people I’ve ever met and read some graphic novels and comics that changed my life, including a little story about a kid named Mark Grayson.
I don’t have many tales from Skybound, at least not yet, but with New York Comic Con around the corner I’m sure that will change. NYCC will be my third convention, following Wonder Con this summer and SDCC back in ’07. I refer to this as the perfect year, right when SDCC was big enough to attract attention but small enough not to alienate retailers. It was pure luck that I was able to attend. I was actually on a family vacation in San Diego when a group of cosplayers walked through the lobby of our hotel and I knew I had to find a way in. It is to my parents' credit that they allowed us to spontaneously drop the day’s activities to go pace in front of the convention center with a sign that said, “By Thor’s hammer, give us thy tickets!”
And you know what? It worked.
Obviously I’ll be attending NYCC this year on a much more legitimate basis, where I’ll be helping Shawn Kirkham, our Director of Business Development, with merch madness. I’ll also be making some videos and managing social media with Brian. However, I've also got some personal NYCC goals: Escape from some walkers, breathe some life into our Instagram account and frolick in Central Park's autumn leaves.
That’s it for me! I’ll be here at Skybound, munching on burnt popcorn and helping out around the office ‘til next time. If you’re in NY, make sure you stop by and say hey!
