STUDIO TIME with Juan Jose Ryp
Skybounders!
I want to introduce a new feature--Studio Time--where we give a peek inside of your favorite Skybound artist's studio. For our first go around, we have Juan Jose Ryp, artist on the brand new Skybound Original, CLONE. Juanjo, take it away!
Hey!
So by the time this is published, my ancient studio will have passed to a better life and I will have moved (finally!). So here's one last look at the place where I drew CLONE.

My studio is a converted bedroom in a very old country house in a small town called Ávila. Pretty much the only thing I liked about it was the total tranquility in there, only interrupted by birds and the wind…you know, those silly things. (Although, my son is in the bedroom next door practicing his guitar...)

The smaller PC I only use for email and file storage. I use the newer one for all my graphic work: scanning, blowing up pencils to ink, touch-ups before the files go to Felix to color… But apart from Photoshop and Sketchup, I try not to rely too much on the digital end. I’m more old school. Just give me a pen and some paper.

I pencil on boards a little bigger than the printed comic book page, and use colored pencils (blue, green, red) to rough it out, then a HB pencil, 0’5 to do the definitive layout. When I'm laying out a page, I need to be alone. Everything bothers me, even music! I guess I’m a bit insane. The music I listen to has to be instrumental; I’m easily distracted by lyrics and I just can’t get work done.
But when I’m inking it’s the complete opposite! I want some company, to hum songs while listening to the radio…I guess I need less concentration after the most creative phase is complete. After blowing up my pencils on the computer, I ink on boards double the size of the penciled pages. I like to spend an entire workday, sometimes more, depending on the level of detail required, using a paintbrush for contours and calibrated felt tips for the details.
Many thanks for reading, I sincerely hope that you like CLONE as much as I do…see you soon!
